Opis:
Coastal aquifers are usually vulnerable to contamination by saltwater intrusion. The degree of contamination depends on the amount of former seawater intruding the aquifer as submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). A three-dimensional numerical SEAWAT model was developed to provide insights to the responses of saltwater intrusion and amount of seawater portion of SGD, to groundwater withdrawal from four wells at different spatial locations. The results showed that saltwater wedge encroachment varies with a withdrawal rate and well location. Increasing withdrawal rates from 0.165 $m^3$/s to 0.53166 $m^3$/s resulted in a noticeable increase in wedge encroachment into the aquifer from 589 m to 1319 m, respectively, regardless of the distance from the coastline. However, higher withdrawals from the wells closer to the coastline caused the hydraulic head near the seaside to drop below the terrestrial head, causing the saltwater wedge to be pushed back toward the sea. Simulations also showed that a coastal well might act as a hydraulic barrier that prevents the brackish zone from moving further inland, which is critically important in terms of groundwater management. Seawater contributed from 5% to above 33% in SGD. Although the withdrawal rates from Well 3 were 10 to 20 times larger than the Well 2 rates, the seawater contribution associated with Well 3 was about the same. This is attributed to the horizontal vicinity of Well 2 to the seacoast boundary compared to Well 3 even though Well 3 is deeper than Well 2, demonstrating that it is the horizontal location that governs the amount of abstracted former seawater.

This study uses groundwater isotopes and ion composition to verify model simulations and ecohydrological studies in the Drentsche Aa nature reserve in The Netherlands, which is representative for the northwestern wetland areas in the Ice Marginal Landscape zone. At eight field sites, a total of 24 samples were analysed for their 13C, 14C, 2H, and 18O isotopes and ionic composition. The isotopes indicate that most of the fen peatlands in the area depend on the exfiltration of sub-regional groundwater flows, which confirmed the previous model simulations and ecohydrological studies. At three sites, isotopes and ionic composition indicate that the groundwater from the sub-regional system has been replaced by local infiltrated rainwater, due to nearby groundwater abstractions for drinking water, which influenced the success rates of the restoration measures. Furthermore, the evidence from chloride and 14C contents was found to indicate the presence of more saline groundwater, which are influenced by the groundwater flows near salt diapirs. Groundwater abstractions may enhance the upward flow of the saline groundwater to eventually exfiltrate at the wetlands, affecting the biodiversity of the nature reserve.

Opis:
Investigating the regime of groundwater levels is one of the main stages of hydrogeological research, which allows quantitative characterization of the process of formation and change of hydrogeological conditions in time. To date, there has been a problem in filling the series of groundwater levels (GWLs) that have gaps. During the formation of time series of data, there are usually gaps in connection with the change in the technique of observing the GWL, the untimely filling of data rows, the lack of the ability to conduct such observations, and others like that. However, it is not possible to completely exclude rows with spaces, as this may lead to inaccurate data while developing forecast and constructing predictive maps of groundwater levels. Therefore, the task is to compare the existing methods of filling the data series with spaces in order to choose the optimum for further work, with their practical verification.

Opis:
The ground water quality was determined after the analyses of water samples from 18 wells. The wells were in the Groundwater Area with the Highest Protection (Triassic water, Opole region, Poland), rural build up. The water table level was low: 0.5 – 18.0 m below the ground surface level (except for one artesian well). The following parameters were determined: pH, EC, colour, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved orthophosphate, total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, BOD, COD-Mn, COD-Cr, humic substances, chloride, sulphate, total hardness, alkalinity, dry residue PAHs (16 compounds), pesticides (6 compounds), however, only selected data were presented in this paper. In all the analysed water samples chloro-organic pesticides were observed. The analysed water contained heptachlor in the highest concentrations of 15.97 mg/dm3. Good quality water must not include concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/dm3 of heptachlor. However, the concentration was circa 32 times higher than this value. The second pesticide determining poor water quality is dieldrin. This compound in the investigated groundwater was 1.94 mg/dm3 – 4 times higher than the limit for acceptable quality ground water. The concentration of pesticides also changed over the course of the research; the concentration in the analysed groundwater in the same well changed quite dramatically over a period of 1 year. Although PAHs and pesticides are potentially toxic for biological organisms they do exist in the environment as a product of the natural biological transformation of organic matter. The noted concentrations and compositions of PAH compounds were different to natural PAHs. It confirms the fact that agricultural activity influences groundwater quality.

The paper presents the quality of groundwater around the municipal waste landfill in the town of Kolonia Lipsk. The structure, location and operation of the landfill are presented. The aim of this work was to assess the state of groundwater quality around the reclaimed Municipal Waste Landfill in the city of Kolonia Lipsk, closed in 2012. The research was carried out in 2015 with the frequency of once a quarter for 10 selected indicators characteristic for the water pollution assessment in the area of municipal waste landfills. The water for testing was taken from three piezometers located in the vicinity of tested object, at different distances and at various depths in farm wells. Although the landfill has not been operating since 2012, the contamination of groundwater around the landfill has been identified. The lack of landfill bottom sealing and the lack of surrounding ditches indicate that the condition will last for some time.

In this work, physicochemical and bacteriological analyses of leachate collected from three different landfills in the Marrakech region in Morocco were carried out. The results showed that the leachate is highly loaded with organic matter, chemical and bacteriological elements and some heavy metals, this load depends of the nature of landfill (rural or urban) and also of its age (young or old), the values of the parameters exceed the limit values for discharge into the natural medium. Physicochemical and bacteriological analyses of groundwater from wells downstream of these landfills were also carried out; The results showed that they had medium to poor quality according to the type of landfill. This is due to the presence of organic matter, total coliforms, total phosphorus and total nitrogen in many studied wells.

The main aim of the paper was to formulate a proposal of using the draining barriers as a method of limiting pollutants in the groundwater reservoir. Primary processes of pollutants migration and examples of functioning the draining barriers work against the spread of various pollutants in the groundwater were indicated. An untypical kind of draining barrier, i.e. wells which were designed as a hydrogeological borehole to exhaust water intended for consumption, was selected as the research object. For analytical purposes, the available archival results of the physicochemical analysis of groundwater exhausted from the wells, located in the water intake so-called “belt D” in Kraków-Nowa Huta were used. The database was analysed by specialist programs, and the dispersion migration of pollutants from the existing metallurgical waste dump “Ruszcza” in time was presented. Temporary and spatial variability of the physicochemical parameters of groundwater was done during the analysis. The analysis was performed both in the draining barriers wells and in the intake boreholes. A geostatistical analysis of the variability of pollutant spread in the groundwater medium was a vital factor in the appraisal efficiency of the draining barriers operation. It was shown that the highest contents of the researched substances were present in the wells, which are located the nearest of metallurgical waste dump “Ruszcza” and are thereby the wells co-forming draining barriers. The efficiency of draining barriers was found after a thorough analysis.

Changes of the groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting in a swampy habitat and moist mixed broadleaved forest are analysed in the paper. The aim of the research is to evaluate the influence of clearcutting on the amount of changes in groundwater levels. The research was carried out in two forestries located on the southern tip of Greater Poland, belonging to Siemianice Experimental Forest Farm. The analysis is based on data from wells located in ashalder swamp forest in Marianka forestry and moist broadleaved forest in Laski forestry. The research is based on the relation of groundwater levels in wells located in clearcutting and observation wells. The received relationship of groundwater levels helps estimate changes in groundwater table, depending on its depth before clearcutting. The research shows increases of groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting. Increments are significantly higher in moist broadleaved forest than in ashalder swamp forest.

Opis:
Rising demands concerning water treatment and conservation make it necessary to search for more effective as well as cheap and ecologically safe solutions. During the filtration process quartz sand is replaced by filter materials which also have a strong effect on account of reactions taking place on a bed’s surface. Today’s technologies for groundwater and seepage water treatment in rapid filters make use of oxidation beds. They are able to effectively remove manganese (II) and iron (II) compounds based on heterogeneous oxidation catalysis. The main catalyst of the manganese removal process in terms of its catalytic oxidation in filtration beds is manganese dioxide. This compound is used as an oxidizing agent in many processes. The research conducted as part of this paper was aimed at creating a product with the qualities similar to a popular Greensand bed protected by patent. The authors tested washed quartz sand varying in granulation which was subject to activation in 10% KMnO4 solution. Grains of quartz sand after covering them with a permanent coat of manganese oxide developed the superficial oxidation layer. While performing the tests, a temperature of the process served as a variable. The beds produced as a result of the experiment enable the removal of iron and manganese from water without prior alkylation. Furthermore, they are an effective method of purifying water of organic pollutants and ammoniacal nitrogen. They function as oxidizing and filtering masses.

Hydrogeochemical investigation was carried out in the toposequence of Gleysols and Retisols within the Opalenica Plain. Groundwater samples from the study area were collected every two or four weeks from 2002 to 2006 in pre-cleaned 1-L polyethylene bottle from 2 representative wells. The results of research indicated that the quantity of dissolved components in groundwater was connected with wells location in the relief and the properties of soil parent materials. The groundwater of soil located higher in the slope (Retisols) was characterized by smaller concentrations of the analysed components, when compared with the composition of groundwater from lower sites of the slope (Gleysols). The groundwater chemistry is mainly controlled by weathering of carbonate minerals as well as silicate weathering. Moreover, the research results indicate that evaporation process can influence the chemical composition of groundwater in the lower part of the slope.

The present study indicates the quick response of a shallow aquifer to precipitation. The nitrate content in water from 20 wells was determined. The study showed a significant 1-m decrease in the water table in the studied wells at low precipitation levels (10 mm) in April (wells 13 and 16). In turn, the water table in the wells after the maximum rainfall in September (130 mm) increased by 0.5 m in well 19. The results of the chemical analysis of the water indicate that the permissible nitrate content was highly exceeded in wells 3, 17, and 18. The nitrate content in wells 1 and 2 was almost 50 mg/l, which is the permissible value for drinking water. The precipitation level did not influence the content of nitrates in the well water.

The paper concerns the experimental research related to the removal of color and permanganate index (CODMn) in the presence of iron and manganese from the underground water by means of coagulation and ozonation. The tests were carried out on a laboratory and technical scale in the real underground water treatment system. Ozone, as a strong oxidizing agent, was used to reduce the color intensity and to convert the iron Fe2+ and manganese ions Mn2+ to Fe(OH) 3 and MnO2, respectively. In order to optimally remove the color to a value below 15 mg/L, the ozone dose of 3 mg/L was sufficient, which also ensured the proper removal of iron and manganese, by 94% and 83%, respectively. However, ozonation conducted under these conditions, did not provide sufficient removal of organic compounds expressed as CODMn below the assumed value of 3 mg/L. The effect of aluminum sulfate and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) was also studied, as a result of which it was found that polyaluminum chloride proved to be more effective reagent. Under the technical conditions of water purification at a dose of 16 mg/L coagulant, the efficiency of color removal was 65.2% and CODMn – 50.8%, which ensured that the values of the tested indicators in the purified water were maintained below the permissible level.

The conducted research included the estimation of the quality of groundwater from the Main Reservoir of Ground Water No. 333 area in Opole District, Poland. The groundwater in the analyzed region shows high diversity in quality. The main threat for the quality of water in this region is the human household activity. The main pollutants of groundwater are: dissolved phosphorus, nitrate and ammonium. The quality and quantity of dissolved humic substances in groundwater were also investigated. The results showed that the contents of water-extractable organic carbon varied. Presently, the analyzed groundwater is characterized by large differences in dissolved forms of organic carbon. During migration of the soil solution through the soil profile to groundwater, dissolved humic substances undergo qualitative and quantitative changes. Correlation analysis between the quantity of carbon in soil and aquatic humic substances, especially fulvic acids, indicates the possibility of their translocation in soil profiles and their transformation and migration to groundwater. This conclusion can be confirmed by FT-IR-analysis.

Calcium carbide waste (CCW), the rest of the carbide welding workshop industry, is available in quite a lot and is immediately disposed of into the environment. Because CWW has a high pH value and a large specific surface area, it can act as an adsorbent in removing metals from groundwater. The content of metals in groundwater is indicated by a reddish color; however, upon contact with air, groundwater oxidation causes iron ions and manganese ions to precipitate. Synthetic groundwater was prepared in this experiment using reagents containing and . Observations were made in a batch process to assess the potential and ability of CCW to reduce iron and manganese levels in groundwater. In this study, to achieve equilibrium, CCW was mixed with 100 mL of synthetic solution and shaken at 25°C with a shaker. Operating time, levels of Fe(II) and (Mn(II) metals, and the mass of CCW were some of the parameters studied in this study. CCW was very good at reducing levels of iron ions and manganese ions after 60 minutes of operation. The percentage of removal of iron and manganese ions respectively – successively increased from 93.765 to 97.99% for iron ions and manganese ions from 91.83 to 95.14% for the initial concentration range of 40 mg/L, 60 mg/L, 80 mg/L, and 100 mg/L. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics of CCW adsorbent in a mixture of iron ion and manganese ion solutions is a second-order kinetic equation. This confirms that the adsorption of CCW on iron ions and manganese ions is a chemisorption process. Calcium carbide waste has the potential to act as an absorbent of heavy metals in groundwater, especially iron and manganese ions.

The purpose of the article is to carry out a complex analysis of conditions and natural factors forming the hydrogeological regime as well as to integrate the existing information and groundwater monitoring data in Ivano-Frankivsk region for further creating the unified automated system to collect, process, analyze and store the monitoring observation data. The authors offer methodology, which is based on the geoinformation approach, for organizing and monitoring of the groundwater. The structure of spatial and attributive data that afford to systemize the existing schemes of the hydrogeological zoning as well as the results of long-term observations over variability of the groundwater levels and factors forming the hydrogeological regime were developed. The new approaches for improving the techniques to forecast the groundwater level with due consideration of temporal patterns for changes in water level, the Moon phases and seismic activity, are proposed. The obtained results are considered as an informational basis for reorganization of the state hydrogeological monitoring on the example of Ivano-Frankivsk region.
