Opis:
The constant discharge of large quantities of toxic substances due to human activities has led to a global environmental issue. Numerous industrial sectors’ effluents, which include coal-based power plants, mineral extraction activities, electroplating processes, as well as battery manufacturing, release metallic ions towards different ecosystems, such as Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), and Chromium (Cr). Heavy metals pose a significant danger to living organisms, humans, and environments because of their properties, mainly severe toxicity, and strong accumulation ability. Metallic ions are not subject to breakdown towards final components when contrasted with organic contaminants, which are significantly impacted by biochemical and chemical decomposition. Consequently, eliminating these elements has been regarded as a significant task within the water treatment sector. The purpose of this article is to analyze the literature related to heavy metals in terms of different issues. The heavy metals expression is explained. The natural sources and human activities responsible for releasing metallic ions into the environment are comprehensively discussed. In addition, heavy metals toxicity and potential risks to humans and different ecosystems are included. Various approaches for removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater, along with their associated advantages and drawbacks, are further evaluated.

Nickel has been listed as a priory control pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Compared with other methods, the combination of vegetation and the addition of mineral sorbents to heavy metal-contaminated soils can be readily applied on a large scale because of the simplicity of technology and low cost. Halloysite and zeolite, among others, can be used for this purpose. A greenhouse study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using natural zeolite, as well as raw and modified halloysite for the remediation of simulated Ni-contaminated soil. The soil was spiked with five doses of nickel, i.e. 0 (control), 80, 160, 240 and 320 mg·Ni kg-1·soil. The average accumulation of heavy metals in nickel-contaminated soil was found to follow the decreasing order of Ni>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb. The highest reduction of Pb content was observed in soil samples taken from pots containing 80 and 160 mg·kg-1 of Ni along with the addition of modified halloysite. The strongest effects were caused by natural zeolite, which significantly reduced the average content of chromium. Contamination at 320 mg Ni·kg-1

Water is mandatory for the functioning of hospitals. Its consumption varies from one service to another, and its use can reduce the service quality on one hand and presents a major risk of nosocomial infection on the other hand. The health risks related to the use of water in hospitals are mostly microbiological, but sometimes they can be chemical. For this reason, the conducted work aimed to evaluate, for the first time, the quality and bacteriological efficiency of the network water of the provincial hospital center IBN BAJA in Taza, Northeast Morocco. During one year, 72 samples were analyzed in six surgery departments, one sample per month for each ward at a rate of six samples per month and per department. The results obtained showed that the water quality of the hospital network was in conformity with the requirements of the Moroccan standards. Nonetheless, some bacterial strains such as Aeromonas salmonicida spp salmonicida, Enterococcus spp., Pseudomonas luteola, Sphingomonas paucimobilis, Pseudomonas stutzeri, Stenotrophonomas maltophilia, Burkholderia cepacia and Micrococcus luteus, which constitute a major risk to human health, were found. Moreover, after sensitivity evaluation to the twenty-seven antibiotics, some strains have been shown to be multi-resistant, which can present a major risk of nosocomial infections in the studied hospital for human beings.

Marine fishery products have been contaminated with microplastic (MPs), including molluscs, crustacean, and fish. The study aimed to analyze the number and types of MPs in the digestive tract and sediment, correlation between number of MPs with total body length, and estimated uptake of MPs in the fish from sediment using Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). The method of determining sampling point involved purposive sampling and direct observation at Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands, Indonesia. Groupers fish were found in 20 individuals with 4 species of Epinephelus areolatus, E. ongus, E. sexfasciatus, and E. fuscoguttatus. The number of MPs found in the gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus is 1648 particles with 3 types: fiber, fragment, and pellet. The highest number of MPs in the sediment was at dock and the lowest was at Gosong Pramuka Island. The numbers of MPs in the digestion tract does not affect the body length of individual species. The BAF value indicates result that the MPs uptake in sediments to gastrointestinal tract of Epinephelus grouper is low. All samples of the Epinephelus grouper were contaminated with MPs.

The peculiarities of sanitary and hygienic rationing of the oil products content in environmental components were analyzed. It was established that the general ecological situation in our country and abroad is unsatisfactory and the issue of finding modern methods of standardizing the quality of environmental components, which would cover the indicators and criteria of their composition and properties, is becoming increasingly urgent. Together, it would ensure ecologically sustainable development of the biosphere in all hierarchical levels of its organization. It was established that such an assessment system does not exist today and therefore, there is no generally accepted universal method for assessing the quality of the environmental components. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop a methodology, in particular a method of biotesting, which will provide a generalized qualitative assessment of the ecological state of the environment, without being based on the quantitative characteristics of the MPC. The possibility of applying a new method of phytotesting of soil that was artificially contaminated with different types of petrochemicals in different concentrations per unit volume of soil using flax seedlings (Linum usitatissimum L.) was investigated. The growth characteristics of the test plants grown on artificially contaminated soil with petroleum products were presented. In the course of research, the possibility of studying the effect of petrochemicals on plants directly in artificially contaminated soil was confirmed. On the basis of the analysis of the obtained results, it was found that when the soil is contaminated with oil products, the aviation fuel has a greater impact on the shoots, whereas gasoline and diesel fuel have a lower impact on the roots in lower concentrations. At higher concentrations, their depressant effect is almost equal.

This work is devoted to studying the dynamics of changes in phytotoxicity of oil-contaminated meadow soils in the process of microbial bioremediation. The research was conducted under laboratory and field conditions. Winter rye (Secále cereále) was selected as the test object. In order to assess the degree of toxicity in the laboratory, the indicators of seed germination – germination rate and germination energy-were determined. In a field experiment, the ecological state of oil-contaminated soils was evaluated by the germination rate and the amount of aboveground plant biomass. The research results showed that the content of petroleum products significantly affected the percentage of germination of rye seeds. There are differences in the size of seedlings for different experimental schemes: in all tests, the average height of cleoptila on polluted soil was less than on unpolluted soil, but at the same time it varied for different experimental bioremediation schemes. The use of potassium humate and modified vermiculite as additives significantly reduced the toxicity of the oil-contaminated soil.

When considering the issue of the functioning of small water reservoirs, the attempt to assess changes in trophy of small retention reservoir located in Wasilkow, Podlasie, before and after remediation, was carried out. Water samples tests were carried out once a month from April 2007 to March 2008, from April 2009 to March 2010 (before remediation), and from April 2013 to March 2014 (after removal of silt). Prior to works related to the reservoir remediation, a gradual increase in the number of tested contaminants and disturbances in the seasonal occurrence of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were observed. Advanced eutrophic processes in Wasilków reservoir occur probably due to the supply of large amounts of humic and biogenic substances from the catchment, because a significant percentage of its area is covered by forests and agricultural lands. The development of the trophic status of the reservoir is largely influenced by the amount of phosphorus and total nitrogen supplied to the reservoir; the least affected by chlorophyll “a”. Comparing the analyses performed in 2007/2008 and 2009/2010, a slight, but growing trend of average trophic levels of water in the basin Wasilków was found. Studies conducted in 2013/2014 revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of all analyzed pollutants, and hence lower TSI values. It can be concluded that the reclamation associated with the removal of sediments brought the expected results.

The content of macronutrients in plants was determined spectrophotometrically. The applied soil amendments and copper doses led to significant variations in the concentrations of the analyzed nutrients in spring rapeseed. Zeolite and halloysite were most effective in increasing the average above-ground biomass of the tested plants. Zeolite had a beneficial effect on the content of total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus in the above-ground parts of spring rapeseed. Raw halloysite increased the content of sodium and calcium, whereas modified halloysite contributed to an increase in the nitrogen, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium content of the tested plants.

Growing areas of sealed surfaces, rising water needs due to industry development, increasing populations, and climatic changes affect precipitation patterns and form a vision of the future in which meteoric water storage may become almost an obligatory activity. The aim of this paper was to identify the amounts and, to some degree, the quality of microorganisms present in rainwater collected from different types of rooftops of utility buildings in the spring-summer season. Apart from the classic culture plate method complemented by flow cytometry. The results of performed analyses explicitly show that rainwater collected from rooftops and directly from air prove to be microbially contaminated to a substantial degree, which includes pathogenic coliforms and faecal streptococci. Waters collected after dry periods also contained bacteria like Clostridium perfingens. The findings rule out the possibility of using rainwater collected from roof surfaces of utility buildings before its treatment.

Soil plays the most important role in the cycling of elements in the terrestrial environment. Contamination of soil with heavy metals have effect on all soil organism and plants. For this reason, studies have been carried out to assess the possibility of neutralising the effect of zinc (0, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 mg Zn kg,-1 of soil) on soil properties by applying neutralising substances (compost, bentonite and zeolite). Soil acidity and sorption properties depended on zinc contamination and on the type of neutralising substances added. In the series without an addition of neutralising substances, increasing zinc soil contamination resulted in a decrease in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity and in the saturation degree of the degree of base saturation, and an increase in soil hydrolytic acidity. An addition of bentonite to zinc-contaminated soil had the most advantageous effect of all the additions of neutralising substances on the tested soil properties. It resulted in an increase in soil pH, in total exchangeable bases, in cation exchange capacity, in the degree of base saturation and simultaneously decreased soil hydrolytic acidity compared to the series without additions. Adding zeolite and compost to soil had a small and usually insignificant effect on soil acidity and soil sorption properties.

Microplastics (MPs) has become a very serious global threat, especially to the health of animals, humans and the environment. In this study we aim to investigate the contamination of MPs in sediment, air, and aquatic biota collected from the waters of Lake Beratan in Bali Province, Indonesia. Lake Beratan is one of the strategic areas that continues to develop as a tourist destination, agriculture and fisheries, as well as a source of water for daily needs. Sediment, water, and aquatic biota samples were collected from 4 stations that represent the Beratan Lake area. Each sample obtained was then followed by the pre-treatment stage using 5 M NaCl solution. Furthermore, the extraction process for each sample used wet oxidation peroxidation (WPO) with the addition of Fe (II) catalyst. The highest average weight of MPs in the sediment samples was obtained at the 1st sampling point of 2.53% which was dominated by soft fragments. The percentage of MPs weight in the water samples was varied at each sampling point with the highest obtained at the 4th point of 99.2% and was dominated by hard-shaped fragments at all sampling points. The collected aquatic biota was also contaminated by MPs of 68% in fish and 36.40% in shrimp. The types of MPs found in the digestive tract of aquatic biota are in the form of fragments, filaments, films and foam. These results indicate that the aquatic environment of Lake Beratan, Bali has MPs content that varies in sediment, water and aquatic biota which are often consumed by the local community. This must be of particular concern and further investigation, especially regarding the environmental management of the lake area and the relevant authorities in formulating regulations to reduce the harmful effects of MPs contamination.

Heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a critical issue because it threatens the ecosystem as well as public health. Early detection of these pollutants is therefore essential, and biomarker analysis can be an ideal way to achieve this. Metallothionein (MT) protein is a widely-used molecular biomarker related to the physiological and biological changes which suitable bioindicators, like freshwater snails, undergo in stressful environments. The purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between the heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) and MT levels in freshwater snails (Sulcospira testudinaria) in the Brantas River watershed. Heavy metals were assayed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while MT levels were analyzed using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia concentration, and phenol concentration were also measured. Samples were obtained from ten sampling sites at Brantas River watershed. The results indicated that Pb concentration ranged from 0.001–0.006 mg/L, Hg from 0.001–0.005 mg/L, and Cd from 0.005–0.03 mg/L, while MT concentration ranged from 0.40–0.80 ng/g. Relationship analysis between heavy metals and MT level in this study revealed the significant effect of Pb concentration on MT values in Sulcospira testudinaria. Therefore, MT in this snail is a potential biomarker for Pb contamination.

The abundance of microplastics (MP) in the aquatic environment is increasingly disturbing for maritime countries, especially Indonesia, because it has the potential to threaten the health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. This review summarized and discussed the distribution of MP abundance in Indonesian aquatic ecosystems which concluded that rivers, bays and estuaries, beaches, seas, and even fish and shellfish have been contaminated. The highest contamination of MP was found in the waters of Jakarta, West Java, and East Java, which are densely populated areas. The potential threat of exposure and accumulation of MP to human health was also discussed. However, differences in the methods and units of measurement for MP as well as limited information regarding the interaction of MP with human organ functions are weaknesses in this review. The future research on the relationship between food and feeding habits of the community around contaminated waters with the accumulation of MP in the human body is needed to identify the prevention and treatment strategies.

This study presents research on the content of mercury and aluminium in arable soils within the range of influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów (Bogatynia region). The results were compared for reference with the region of Zgorzelec, which is situated outside the range of emission and with the results of tests conducted by other authors. The tests did not show a statistically significant increase in the mercury level in arable land from the range of influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów, neither in comparison to soils from Zgorzelec region. It is noticeable that the maximum level of mercury in the analysed area was nearly twice as high as in the values obtained in soils from industrial area in Opole and 25 times lower than the maximum mercury level found in the soils of Jelenia Góra District. On the other hand, tests of aluminium content showed a significant, nearly 3 times higher level of this metal in the range of direct influence of the Coal Mine and Power Plant Turów in comparison with the Zgorzelec region. The noted values were higher than in soils from industrial area in Opole.

Contamination generated by dumps is an environmental problem because the soils around the dumps are used for the cultivation of agricultural products and pastures, and could constitute a threat to human health. The contamination index and ecological risk potential for heavy metals in agricultural soils surrounding the solid waste dumps in Agua de las Vírgenes (AV) and El Eden (ED) in Huancayo were evaluated. The concentration of heavy metals in the soils was measured using an inductively coupled optical emission spectrophotometer. The average concentration of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe and Zn in the soils was 25.77, 1.03, 6.09, 112.07, 48.52, 53733.33 and 349.10 mg/kg in AV and 14.35, 0.28, 2.85, 123.01, 57.47, 36137.50 and 414.31 mg/kg in ED respectively. The mean values of the contamination factor for As determined a very high soil contamination status at both sites. The order of mean Igeo values was As> Cd> Pb> Zn> Cu> Fe> Cr. The soils are strongly enriched with As and Cd. The highest risk index was for Cd, with a higher contribution to the overall potential risk index. The principal component analysis explained that 71% of the data set and the identified sources of heavy metals are the varied composition of wastes in general and crop irrigation with wastewater. In general, agricultural soils are characterized for a level of ecological risk that varies from high to very high. Among the measured heavy metals As, Cd and Pb pose significant health risks. Continuous monitoring of the level of contamination of soils affected by dump leachate and wastewater irrigation is suggested.
