Opis:
The phenomenon of smog, i.e. excessive air pollution in urban areas is well-known and has been widely described in the literature. Typically, two types of smog are distinguished: the acid smog that is called "London smog" and the photochemical smog called "Los Angeles-type smog". The first one is formed in the winter months. In contrast, the photochemical smog arises in the summer months. In recent years in Poland, especially in winter, alarms associated with poor air quality have become very common. Under Polish climatic conditions, the main reason for low air quality corresponds to the exceeded permissible concentrations of suspended particulate matter. The paper analyzes the process of "Polish smog" formation by comparing the recorded concentrations of PM10 suspended particulate matter at four monitoring stations of the Inspectorate of Environmental Protection with weather conditions prevailing at that time. The data from the monitoring stations located in four Polish cities: Krakow, Zabrze, Lodz and Gdansk were analyzed. The analysis covered the years 2014-2017. The results of this analysis showed that "Polish smog" arises under different meteorological conditions than other types of smog known from the literature.

Opis:
The study aimed to determine the mass concentration of PM10 in the air in urban area. The specific objective of the research was to analyze and assess the impact of transport road emissions on the level of concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere in the Lublin agglomeration. The measuring points were located in places at different distances from the communications emission sources and, at the same time, possibly varying degrees of air pollution dust. Measuring the concentration of dust at the measuring points was performed using an indirect method using a laser photometer. In the research point which was not under direct influence of a heavy traffic road dust levels lower by 10.5% to 65.4% than in the vicinity of the transport route were reported. Small particle air pollution at all the points covered by the study increased significantly during the heating season. Based on the comparison of the obtained values of PM10 concentrations with legal standards, it was found that the air pollution exceeded the limits in all measurement points only during a series of measurements in the months of November-December. The recorded increase in air pollution during the heating season should be associated with an increased dust emissions in this period from the “low” emitters – local house boilers and detached houses.

Opis:
Air pollution is the result of natural processes and intense urban development. The undesired emission of volatile substances causes environmental threats such as acid rains, aggravated greenhouse effect or the ozone depletion. Moreover, the pollution released into the air is harmful to the human respiratory system, eyes and skin. This paper presents the body of analyses conducted in Poznań between 2015–2017 on the changes in the local emission concentration of PM10 and PM2.5. The data concerning the emission of suspended particulates were provided by the meteorological station on Polanka St. in Poznań. The research included a correlation analysis. The results point to a steady decrease in the amount of produced particulates. It was also noted that the emissions of PM10 and PM2.5 change seasonally, with the highest levels in the autumn and winter. Furthermore, the amount of emitted suspended particulates is correlated with the temperature; hence, it is supposed that the main source of air pollution in Poznań involves low-efficiency heaters and boilers.

Opis:
A number of cities in Poland have been coping with the problem of air pollution levels exceeding the allowable limits, with PM10 airborne particulate considered one of the most hazardous factors for human health. Poland ranks high among European countries with some of the highest levels of airborne particulate pollution, and the Polish cities regularly place high in the EU ranking of those with the highest PM levels (and benzo(a)pyrene, a toxic airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs). Airborne PM10 concentration levels greatly depend on the prevailing atmospheric and topographic conditions. Temperature inversion represents one of the unfavorable weather conditions and this article attempts to study the effect of thermal conditions prevailing in the Żywiec Basin on airborne PM10 particulate concentrations in immissions. The 2016–2021 winter (heating) seasons were analyzed for pollution emissions, especially those related to heating by the municipal sector and classified as “low emissions”, i.e. emissions from sources not higher than 40 meters. An analysis of the 2016–2021 heating seasons showed the air temperature exerted a significant effect on combustion processes (low emissions) within the Żywiec Basin. The difference between airborne PM10 particulate levels in immissions at temperatures both above and below zero ranged from 86 μg/m3 in the 2016–2017 heating season to 25 μg/m3 in the same period in 2020–2021. Average airborne PM10 particulate concentrations throughout the entire period analyzed stood at 41.3 μg/m3 for the typical temperature distribution in the elevation profile, whereas inversion almost doubled it (72.2 μg/m3).

Opis:
Central Europe is the region with the highest concentration of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometers (PM10) in outdoor air. Weather conditions combined with a high industrialization of regions laying along the Czech Republic and Poland border influence the formation of long smog episodes with PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere at the value of several hundred micrograms in a cubic meter. However, it has been observed that the main source of particulates pollution in the area of the Polish-Czech border between the most populated areas of Ostrava and Katowice is the residential heating fired with solid fuels, participating at the level of not less than 21% in overall air contamination with dusts. It particularly concerns PM10, which is one of the major harmful air pollutants produced by the combustion of solid fuels such as biomass and coal. The measures leading to decrease the dust emission from coal burned individual heat sources include methods to eliminate old-type boilers not permitted by the law, as well as illegal incineration of fuels of bad quality or including admixture of wastes. It requires a new approach for effective identification of such sources, as well as for recognition of pollutants leaving household emitters and evaluation of their share in overall effect on human health. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with miniaturized sensors detecting gaseous and dust particles at the outlet of an individual emitter can compensate the lack of information unable to be obtain using traditional measurements. The use of UAVs to identify specific sources of air pollution is still at an early stage of development and there are not too many scientific publications on this topic so far. Despite it, this technology seems to be usable to create undemanding, low-cost and effective method of air pollution sources assessment. In the current article, some aspects of using UAVs for identification of especially troublesome emission sources located on residential areas are presented, including finding the dominant emission source, determining the optimal distance between a UAV and the emission source or the influence of the UAV altitude, movement and sampling time on measurement result.

Due to its irritating, allergenic, toxic, pathogenic, and carcinogenic effects, suspended particulate matter (PM) seriously threatens human health. Therefore, it seems obvious to control the level of concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles and their reduction in the indoor environment such as homes, workplaces, or public utilities. In the following work, an attempt was made to determine the efficiency of a home air purifier based on the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles at selected measurement points in a teaching room located in the building of the Bialystok University of Technology. The tests were carried out in March and in April 2021, using the DT-96 meter, which measured the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in the air. The study included the time and intensity of air purifier operation. In addition, reference was made to the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in outdoor air, which was measured at measuring stations in the city of Bialystok. The obtained test results made it possible to assess the initial state of air quality in the test room, as well as to determine the parameters affecting the best efficiency of the air purifier and to notice the dependencies in changes in the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 between the indoor and outdoor environment.

The objective of the work was to determine the influence of selected meteorological elements on the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in the air as well as arsenic, cadmium, lead and benzoapirene contents in PM10. The work is based on the data collected by the automatic measurement station located on ul. Konarskiego, Siedlce, in 2013-2017. ANOVA demonstrated that the heavy metal content throughout the year was significantly influenced by the month of the year. The lowest concentration of arsenic was recorded from May to August, and cadmium from January to March as well as from October to December. Similarly to cadmium, the lead content was the highest in the winter months (from October to March). The analysis of correlation revealed that air pollution was predominantly affected by air temperature, wind speed and air humidity. The relationship between the air temperature and pollutant content was negative. As the temperature increased, arsenic, cadmium, lead, benzoapirene and the PM10 contents declined. It was found that an increase in wind speed contributed to a significant decline in the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5. Moreover, wind speed affected the heavy metal content. Relative air humidity influenced the metal concentration from November to May, whereas an increase in wind speed contributed to a significant decline in the concentration of only PM10 in the period from January to November.

The present state of air quality is determined according to emission and imission situation of basic pollutants. According to the obtained information about the state of air quality, the development of imission and emission presently exhibits a decreasing tendency caused especially by industrial production innovations in European countries, with slight rises in renewable energy sources for electricity production, but especially the effort to improve the condition relates to the use of mandatory quotas and pollution charges in the European Union. The aim of the this article is to review the emission development in the year 1998 up to 2013 for Central European countries – Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland and their comparison to the European average value of the released emission. The NOx and particulate matter PM10, PM2,5 were evaluated as pollutants, which over the last few years have contaminated the air and in particular the main environment.

Detailed spatial analysis of area coverage was performed in the present paper, which allowed to determine numerous derivative parameters connected with human activity as well as natural processes. Data from Database of Topographic Objects in nominal scale 1:10 000 (in short: BDOT10k) in GML format were used as source materials and processing of the source data to object-relational form of SpatialLite database was performed. Methods of areas classification and valorization on the basis of land coverage diversity were used in the research after using modification of classes selection to BDOT10k. Borders of spatial objects had geo-referential precision to 3 m and were not subjected to generalization process. It provided possibility to achieve high degree of credibility of calculated parameters. Materials that concern ecological corridors were obtained from the General Directorate for Environmental Protection by means of WFS service. Geoprocessing methods and spatial connections in GIS heterogenic systems were used to perform analyses. The effects of all the conducted analyses allowed to identify problem fields where areas of ecological corridors became strongly anthropogenized. The results were presented as multilayered compositions and cartograms. The research area covered 15,200 km2 and ranged the territory of Małopolska province.

Opis:
It is important to indicate air quality level in metropolitan areas as it is harmful to public health. Air quality index (AQI) is a useful tool to convert air quality pollutants concentrations into a single number representing air quality level. There are many air quality index models in the literature to represent air quality level. Two models were selected to assess the air quality in Mosul city. The first model utilizes the highest sub-index depending on USEPA pollutants standards. The second model includes the weights of all pollutants in the model as an aggregated air quality index (AAQI) model. Air quality concentrations were collected using a fixed monitoring station located in the courtyard of the public library for a year. The results illustrate that the values of aggregated Air quality index model were higher than those of the USEPA model. Air quality category "Moderate" was dominant in winter and spring for the two models. In contrast, the category "Unhealthy for sensitive group" was dominant in summer and autumn. Furthermore, the category "Unhealthy" appeared only with aggregated model in autumn. The contribution of air pollutants in AQI can be ranked as PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3 from higher to lower. The study concluded that the AAQI is comprehensive and more workable in environmental management.

The issue of indoor air quality is becoming increasingly important. Ensuring optimal air parameters is important for the health of people who are particularly sensitive to impurities contained therein. Finding solutions that improve the quality of indoor air requires a prior detailed recognition of the problem of its pollution. The subject of the research is dust pollution in the air in a teaching laboratory room. The attention was focused on the characteristics of air pollution with the total dust fraction and suspended particulate fractions PM10 and PM2.5. The dust content was measured with a laser meter enabling indirect measurement. It consists in using the phenomenon of damping laser light scattered on the tested air sample at an angle of 90 degrees. As a result of the conducted research, factors influencing the increase of dust concentration in the indoor air were identified. These include the quality of the outdoor air and the source of dust emission in the room. In order to obtain more comprehensive data, it is necessary to continue the research with the possibility of extending the duration of the measurement tests and the test cycle.

In this study, we investigate the changes in the concentrations of suspended particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and selected gaseous pollutants (VOCs, H2S) in the atmospheric air inside and outside a 9-story building, which is intended primarily for the teaching activities. The purpose was to determine whether the air quality inside the building is directly dependent on the outside air quality. The analysis also included the influence of the height of the building, its location and environment, as well as meteorological conditions. No clear correlation was found between the measured parameters inside and outside the building. The height above ground (the floor on which the measurements were made) was found to have a significant influence on the concentration of each pollutant. Wind direction was also found to have a very important impact on the air quality inside the building. A strong relationship was observed on the leeward side between the concentration of impurities on the inside and outside of the building.

The paper considers the current problem of improving the quality of atmospheric monitoring. The paper aimed at conducting a monitoring section of the existing situation in the studied territories in St. Petersburg. The following study methods were described: gravimetric, electrochemical, and chromatographic. The analysis of samples was carried out on the following laboratory facilities of the mobile environmental laboratory: PU-3E aspirator, ECOLAB portable gas analyser, DUSTTRAK 8533 dust analyser, portable gas chromatograph FGKh-1, professional weather station. The study consisted of two parts and was carried out in two districts of the city: Novosmolenskaya Embankment of the Smolenka River (Vasileostrovsky District) and the banks of the Volkovka River (Frunzensky District). As a result of the study, the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, carbon oxide, suspended solids and volatile organic compounds in the air of the studied districts were measured. The obtained values were compared with the maximal single limiting concentration (LMCm.s.) and assumptions were made about the possible sources of pollution. In the territory of Novosmolenskaya Embankment, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide varied from 0.211 mg/m3 to 0.472 mg/m3, which means the exceedance of LMCm.s. The maximum permissible concentration of the volatile organic compounds (VOC) content in air was exceeded by several orders of magnitude. No exceedance of LMCm.s. was detected for the content of carbon oxide and suspended solids in the air. The empirical data was used to build the air pollution content maps and to calculate the atmospheric pollution index in the studied territory.
