Opis:
Sediment is a universal issue that is generated in the river catchment and affects the river flow, reservoir capacity, hydropower generation and dam structure. This paper aims to present the result of experimentation in sediment load estimation using various machine learning algorithms as a powerful AI approach. The data was collected from eight locations in upstream area of Ringlet reservoir catchment. The input variables are discharge and suspended solid. It was found that there is strong correlation between sediment and suspended solid with correlation coefficient of R = 0.9 . The developed ML model successfully estimated the sediment load with competitive results from ANN, Decision Tree, AdaBoost and SVM. The best result was produced by SVM (v-SVM version) where very low RMSE was generated for both training and testing dataset despite its more complicated hyperparameters setup. The results also show a promising application of machine learning for future prediction in hydro-informatic systems.

It is presently well-recognized that the contamination of aquatic sediments in Kosovo is a widespread phenomenon. The observation of the chemical analyses of water and sediments is essential to determine the extent of trace elements in these ecosystems. Hence, in order to be able to determine the mass concentration of the predominant elements present in river Sitnica, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used for this research. Moreover, a comparison of the mass concentration of water elements with the mass concentration of the elements found in the Sitnica sediments was provided. Utilizing the results obtained from the ICP-MS analysis, it was shown that the mass concentration of nickel, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, lead, copper, aluminum in certain water sample stations exceeds the permissible sediment quality criteria. Considering the toxicity that heavy metals exert on the aquatic environment, this research aimed to assess and measure the metal toxicity, because only then, a proper solution can be suggested to sustain freshwater ecosystems and to prevent constant damage from the human activity.

The surface water quality and level of metal contents in the contamination of the Toplluha river sediment were determined by means of statistical techniques and pollution indicators. The samples of water and sediments were taken in five different locations along the Toplluha river in the spring period 2013 and 2019 using standard methods for analysis. International standards (WHO 2004) were used to assess the quality of water. The samples of water in some of the locations were above these criteria levels. The heavy metal contents in the sediment were in the following order: Cu > Zn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd. For the evaluation of the heavy metal content, some factors were applied: enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI) and index of geoccumulation (Igeo). Cu and Pb have a significance enrichment according to the calculated EF values. The Igeo index values for Cu and Zn were at a higher level. The PLI index values were at a progressive high level from stations S3 to S5. Therefore, the preliminary treatment of the discharging waters is indispensable.

Hydropower is one of the renewable energy sources. Hydropower plants generate electricity using the kinetic energy of flowing water. Although hydroelectric power plants are not as prominent as solar or wind farms, it should be noted that they generate the most significant amount of the power. They are also the most technically advanced projects. Power plants are built with different technical parameters of turbines, different sizes of dams or weirs and different ways of exploiting the energy of flowing water. A common feature, however, is the significant impact of hydroelectric power plants on the functioning of adjacent regions. The paper divides this impact into economic and local development, landscape, and ecological functions, emphasizing the interaction of these influences. The paper discusses the hydromorphological changes taking place in the immediate vicinity of the structure, as a consequence of channel development. The processes of aggradation and degradation of the channel are the answer to hydrodynamic equilibrium loss. These hydrodynamic processes are associated with the subsequent ecological response of the habitat. The most important of these include the dynamic equilibrium loss by the river and the subsequent morphological parameters striving to restore it according to Lane’s relation, known as the most important principle in the fluvial morphology science. The impact of the hydropower plant on the fluvial environment results, first of all, from a significant environmental impact of the damming of the river itself. If the structure is correctly designed, maintained, and operated, it allows controlling the water conditions upstream and downstream with simultaneous energy production. Due to several geometric, hydraulic, and granulometric changes, and further, the resultant economic, landscape, and natural changes that significantly affect the operation of a region, these should be considered as early as the design stage and should be an integral part of any hydroelectric project.

The development of industry, agriculture, and transport contributes to an increased environmental pollution by heavy metals. The aim of the study was preliminary assessment of the contents of selected metals (lead, cobalt, copper, chromium, cadmium and nickel) in the sediments of Bug river. The study comprised part of the river flowing through Poland. It was found that the Bug river sediments are not contaminated in respect to the content of tested metals. Based on the analysis of the study results, these metals can be lined up in the following order: Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > Co > Cd. Statistical analysis showed that copper and chromium occur in Bug river sediments in forms bindings with organic matter in majority of cases. The granulometric analysis of sediments from Bug river revealed the largest percentage of two fractions: 1.0–0.2 mm with average of 47.7 ± 19.77% and 0.2–0.1 mm with average of 20.6 ± 7.7%. These are the dominant fractions with the accumulation of metals in river sediments, which has been confirmed by statistical analysis.

Aquatic ecosystems are a valuable part of natural environment. The increasing level of pollution in waters transforming biocoenoses and other adverse effects of the impact of toxic substances have contributed to the development of biological monitoring. The aim of the study was to determine the changes in contents of zinc and lead in bottom sediments and roots of aquatic plants: Phragmites australis and Acorus calamus in the river Narew. There were 14 points on the river, from where samples of bottom sediments and plant material were collected. The contents of lead and zinc were determined by means of flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry using Varian device. It was proven that bottom sediments were characterized by low contents of zinc and lead except from two sampling points: in Bondary and Narew. Achieved results of analyzes of plant material showed a slight exceeding in the case of lead. Spatial distribution of zinc and lead contents in examined roots of plants coincided with their contents in bottom sediments, which was also confirmed by statistical analysis. It was proven that aquatic plants had greater tendency for accumulation of metals than bottom sediments.

The concentration of Cu, Pb, Zn and As in water, sediment and muscle of Oncorhynchus mykiss from the Tishgo river in the central Andes of Peru were analyzed. The water, sediment and fish samples were collected from 36 sites in three sampling sectors. The analytical determination was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean Pb concentrations in the water from the three sampling sectors showed significant differences (p < 0.05) which exceeded the values of the Peruvian standard and the WHO. The mean concentrations of Cu, Pb and As in sediment did not present significant differences (p > 0.05) in the three sectors evaluated. The redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the concentrations of As and Pb in water, and Cu, As and Zn in sediment significantly influence the concentration of these elements in the O. mykiss muscle. The mean concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and As in the O. mykiss muscle were lower than those established by international regulations. Therefore, the concentrations of heavy metals and As recorded in this study do not represent a threat to the consumption of O. mykiss from the Tishgo river.

Nickel content in bottom sediment was slightly higher than the geochemical background. The largest amounts of Ni were associated with the finest fraction, while the smallest with the thickest fraction. The highest content of this element was recorded at the point Ełk Barany, which was connected with developing industry in the city of Ełk. All of the tested plants showed greater Ni contents than the amount naturally occurring in plants. In most cases, most of Ni was associated with plant roots, and the least with leaves. It has been proven that aquatic plants can be good indicators of the aquatic environment status.

Opis:
In the Upper Vistula Basin, series of check dams are located on almost each of mountain stream. These streams are strongly affected by the presence of dams that disrupt the sediment movement in the channel. Moreover, the check dams are in poor technical condition. The current study focuses on the Krzczonówka Stream, a left-bank tributary of the Raba River, where restoration works were undertaken in 2014 involving lowering of a check dam. The aim of the project was the continuity of the stream corridor for fish migration restoration. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the streambed evolution and a numerical analysis of the impact of check dam lowering and removal of sediment, previously accumulated upstream under the geomorphologic conditions in the studied stream after three years of project execution. A 1D sediment transport model was employed to estimate the areas of erosion and deposition throughout the river course. The calculations show that the thickness of the deposited sediment ranged from 0.20 up to 0.91 m at 1.5 km of the reach. The layer thickness deposited form 2.1 to 1.75 km of the reach, is rather thin; subsequently, the layer thickness increases and the highest values are reached at the area of 1.35 – 1.7 km. The local erosion is observed in 1.1 km of the reach. It is very important to note that the identified erosional and accumulation tendencies are the same at corresponding cross sections measured as calculated based on the model. This also provides a practical form of model validation. Additionally, the stream channel evolution on the base on low annual water stages in Krzczonów gauging station, located downstream the dam, indicates that the bottom has increased in this section by about 50 cm. The comparison of cross-sectional geometry in years of 2015–2016 (after flood event) shows that the stream channel moved in the transverse direction (bank erosion and deposition) and the streambed level has changed slightly. Currently, the stream channel does not seem to be in a state of hydrodynamic equilibrium. Thus, further field measurements will try to indicate when this balance is achieved.

The pollution of rivers from human activities such as housing, markets, workshops, transportation, land cultivation, and industry has become an issue. The increasing contribution of heavy metals to pollution in rivers has a direct effect on the metal bioaccumulation in fish. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Pb in the waters, sediment, and fish harvested from the Krueng Sabee River, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Furthermore, the water, sediment, and fish samples were collected from six locations representing the upstream and downstream regions of the river. Cd, Cu, and Pb were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results showed that Cd, Cu, and Pb were not detected in the water, while the concentration of Cd in the sediments ranges between 0.0544 to 0.2683 mg kg-1, Cu ranges between 4.4149 to 14.8160 mg kg-1, and Pb ranges between 0.9186–15.4954 mg kg-1. Therefore, Cd, Cu, and Pb in the water and sediment were below the quality standard, but these heavy metals in the fish sample met the threshold limit. The highest Cd concentration was reported in Tor soro (5.5591 mg kg-1), and the highest concentration of Cu was reported in Mugil cephalus (6.7021 mg kg-1), while the higher Pb concentration was reported in Cyclocheilichthys Apogon (0.0279 mg kg-1).

The transformations of river channels as a result of human activity may reflect the level of anthropogenic pressure. Recorded in macroscale, they are indicators of transformations for the larger part of the river basin, while in the microscale they usually refer to its fragment. The human activity that has the strongest influence on the fluvial processes, including suspended sediment transport, is the interference in the riverbed, such as hydrotechnical construction (create of water stages) or transformation of the river banks (concreting of the river banks). The aim of the research was to determine the impact of bridges on the process of water turbidity in the longitudinal profile of large lowland rivers. The research area was the lower reach of Vistula – bridge profiles: Torun, Bydgoszcz, Kiezmark (Poland) and bridge profile on Sukhona – a tributary of the Northern Dvina River near the city of Veliky Ustyug (Russia – Arkhangelsk Oblast). The research conducted in the years 2013–2017 included the measurements of water turbidity in the cross-sections of the above-mentioned rivers. The determinations of water turbidity were carried out using traditional (granulometry analysis) and nephelometric methods (devices: LISST-25X and turbidimeter). The impact of bridges on the variability of water turbidity was determined. The obtained results were related to the variability of depth conditions (bathymetric measurements) and hydrodynamics in the cross-section profile of the channel.

Surface sediment quality of potential rivers in Peru was evaluated using indicators of contamination, accumulation and ecological risk of heavy metals and As. Surface sediment samples were collected at 54 sampling sites in the Tishgo and Chia rivers during 2018. The determination of Cu, Pb, Zn and As was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results revealed the decreasing order of the mean concentrations of heavy metals and As in the Chia River of Zn > Cu > As > Pb and Tishgo of Zn > Pb > As > Cu. The PLI for the Tishgo River were greater than one (PLI > 1) denoting the deterioration it has been experiencing. In the Chia River, 60% of the sampling sites indicated no appreciable contamination by these elements (PLI < 1). The Igeo values of As in both rivers showed a state of contamination, from moderately to severely contaminated. In the Tishgo River the potential ecological risk varied from low to moderate and in the Chia River from low to considerable. Finally, this study reveals the applicability of the evaluation indexes of contamination, accumulation and potential ecological risk of toxic metals so that special control measures can be adopted.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the Hilla River sediments on the heterogeneity of the distribution of heavy sand minerals for the fine and very fine sand classes as well as for the surface and subsurface layers. The results showed that the heavy sand minerals that were determined according to the specific gravity of each mineral and the specific gravity of the particles of minerals identified in the soils under study ranged between (2.5–4.5) and were divided into four groups in terms of the specific gravity. The first group included each of the minerals (Mica and Chlorite) of low specific gravity, while the second group contains (Pyroxene, Amphibole, Epidote Group). The third group includes minerals (Tourmaline and Garnet, Staurolite and Kyanite) and the two groups are classified as minerals of medium-specific gravity; in turn, the fourth group contains minerals of high specific gravity, namely (Zircon, Rutile and Opaques). As a result, the most important factors affecting the sedimentation, sorting and sedimentation processes are the conveyor’s speed, load capacity, the size of the separation particles and their specific gravity. The complete mismatch of the horizontal distribution of the minerals of one group is due to the varying ranges of the specific gravity of the minerals within the general range of specific gravity.
