The paper goal is to develop a spatial analyses of the most critical environmental issues in the country and how the population concerns could be addressed with the use of spatial technologies. Population perception of environment management relies on its minimum levels. In the recent past, static, fixed scale, multi use, highly accurate, permanent, paper maps compiled over a short period of time was the norm, meanwhile today’s world uses a dynamic, single use, variable accuracy, variable scale, digital product made from data possibly retrieved from database derived from multiple sources. The opportunity to combine spatial technology associated with numerical data leading to a structured and genuine analyzes of the country issues turns to be an optimal strategy. We structure a set of digital maps encouraging decision-makers to rely their performance on spatial tools. Coastline pollution stands as a top priority. For the purpose of the analysis, the entire coastline was divided into sectors. Hence, further investigations could be addressed toward space-time relationship to cover the environmental evolution process, which may serve as an input for future predictions.

In this article we presented the issues concerning the measurement of road noise, measurement results, and the discussion pertaining to the methods of limiting the excessive noise in the city of Lublin. Mobile systems, equipped with software which enables editing the measurement data, analysis and presentation of the data in the form of an acoustic map, are used to measure the noise level. Exemplary streets of the city are shown, where the road noise level has been significantly exceeded, and the effects of acoustic screens installation is presented. Moreover, the preventive and educational actions which are carried out in Lublin, meant to popularise alternative methods of transport, are discussed. It was concluded that an effective reduction of the traffic noise in the city can be achieved already at the stage of designing housing estates, along with the planning of access roads and noise barriers.

The objective of this study was to determine the biodegradability of bioplastic materials – sponge cloths – available on the European market that are labeled as 100% biodegradable but not certified as compostable. The test was carried out in a controlled composting environment. The project length was 22 weeks. The emphasis was put on discovering whether the sponge cloths are biodegradable or not. Based on the results thereof it can be concluded that sponge cloths have not decomposed completely but their color has changed and that degradation and physical changes occurred. Samples A1, and A2 have not decomposed completely and exhibited very slow degradation rate. Sample B5 exhibited the highest degradation rate. Samples B3, B4 exhibited high degree of decomposition. The main conclusion from this study is that biodegradation of bioplastics materials strongly depends on both the environment in which they are placed and the chemical nature of the material.

Specific conditions in urban areas favour large species richness, these are also places prone to the anthropogenic pressure. As a result, many studies on aquatic habitats in urban ecosystems have been carried out. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of diatom assemblages developing in artificial environment in relation to water chemical parameters. The study was performed on a small water outflow in south-eastern Poland, which started in the storm sewage. The water at the studied sites was characterized by alkaline pH and low content of nutrients. The values of other chemical parameters were highly variable, depending on the research season. A total of 113 taxa were identified in five research seasons; most of them prefer circumneutral and fertile habitats, with a high content of biogens and are tolerant to water pollutions. Aerophytic and terrestrial taxa were observed in the analyzed materials in high diversity.

The abundance of microplastics (MP) in the aquatic environment is increasingly disturbing for maritime countries, especially Indonesia, because it has the potential to threaten the health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. This review summarized and discussed the distribution of MP abundance in Indonesian aquatic ecosystems which concluded that rivers, bays and estuaries, beaches, seas, and even fish and shellfish have been contaminated. The highest contamination of MP was found in the waters of Jakarta, West Java, and East Java, which are densely populated areas. The potential threat of exposure and accumulation of MP to human health was also discussed. However, differences in the methods and units of measurement for MP as well as limited information regarding the interaction of MP with human organ functions are weaknesses in this review. The future research on the relationship between food and feeding habits of the community around contaminated waters with the accumulation of MP in the human body is needed to identify the prevention and treatment strategies.

Composition of sample 3 has not been reported. The materials have been tested as to the rate and character of their degradability/biodegradability in controlled composting conditions. Experiment explored also the effect of degradation/biodegradation of plastic bags on compost quality. The material of the original samples was subjected to assessment using the Nicolet 6700 FT-IR spectrometer, the outcome thereof was obtaining infrared spectra of the samples. For further specification the original samples were tested using the thermogravimetrical analysis. The texture of the foils at different stages of degradation is presented in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) photographs. Plastic bags certified as compostable have degraded in laboratory conditions and their degradation had no impact on the quality and features of compost. Selected samples (4, 6) showed significant erosion on surface when subjected to the SEM analysis. Samples labeled (by their producers) as 100% degradable (samples 1, 2, 3) did not show any visual signs of degradation and the process of degradation had no impact on the quality and features of compost. Only one of the samples (sample 1) showed certain erosion of surface when submitted for the SEM analysis.

Opis:
Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.) grows in moderate area of the northern hemisphere, in Poland – its range covers the whole country. It appears on the farm wastelands, by roadsides, on enbankments, river banks, forest lips and in open spaces. The present paper has faced the challenge of defining the influence of the environmental conditions on the mineral composition of Tanacetum vulgare leaves. The plants were picked in the blooming period from May to September 2017 in 12 natural environments of their growth and at different contamination levels. The dried and minced plant material was submitted to chemical analyses of the bio elements content (K, P, Cu, Zn, Mo) of leaves. A great variety was observed when speaking in terms of particular elements content in dependence on the position. In all tests, significant quantities of K and P were found. The study results point at the very fact that the mineral composition of Tanacetum vulgare leaves is influenced by the environmental contamination, caused by the nearby "neighbourhood" of circulation areas of high traffic volume, factories or patrol stations.

Due to the rapid pace of urbanization, the lead-zinc slags previously located outside the settlement turned out to be within the city of Shymkent and began to pose a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of lead-zinc slags on the environment of Shymkent. It has been revealed that the fields of ruderal plant species are inversely correlated with the lead content in the soil, for phyto-indication of the state of soils, the most informative indicators are the phytocenotic composition and the projective covering of soils with vegetation. At the same time, the proportion of annual species in the control is 53.5 ± 5.6%; with an increase in the toxic load, their role gradually weakens, reaching from 14496.0 ± 105.1 mg/kg Pb2+ to 5.2 ± 0.4%. It was found that Dodartia orientalis, Centaurea squarrosa Willd., Plantago lancetofolium are hyperaccumulators of lead ions, while electron microscopic images showed that lead ions accumulate in the intercellular space of plants, forming significant conglomerates of 10–75 nm. The negative influence of lead-zinc waste has been established, which leads to the accumulation of lead in the blood of children and, as a consequence, is the cause of various diseases. The maximum lead content in the amount of 103 micrograms / dl was found in the blood of children in the area of the city, located 800–1000 m from the slag storage site. Developing hypochromic anemia in children indicates its toxic origin. It was revealed that 90% of children have such pathologies as biliary dyskinesia, dental caries, small anomalies of heart development.

The quality of the aquatic environment of high Andean lagoons was evaluated by means of multivariate statistical methods in two contrasting climatic periods. The water samples and benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in 22 sampling sites during the rainy and dry seasons. In each lagoon DO, DTS, EC, temperature and pH were determined in situ. The results revealed that the physicochemical parameters comply with the environmental quality standards for water, except COD and BOD5. In the PCA of the physicochemical parameters, the first two axes explained 73% of the total variation. The gradual analysis in pairs showed significant differences. The SIMPER analysis determined an average of four families of benthic macroinvertebrates per lagoon that showed more than 70% contribution. The ANOSIM revealed that Tragadero lagoon differs significantly from the others. The DistLM showed a value of 0.46 of coefficient of determination. Therefore, the quality of the environment of high Andean lagoons evaluated by means of multivariate statistical methods presents important differences or dissimilarities not only in the physicochemical characteristics of the water, but also in the composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities.

Plastic debris has become a global problem due to its widespread distribution and accumulation in the marine environment. Indigenous bacteria in the marine environment are able to quickly contaminate plastic surface and assemble to form successional plastisphere-specific bacterial. The formation of microbial biofilms on the plastic surface can indirectly initiate the degradation of plastic polymers. The environmental conditions of the tropical region make the growth of microbial biofilms become faster. However, the study on the biodiversity of microorganisms in marine plastic debris is limited to the northern hemisphere, which includes subtropical and temperate regions. This review provides current studies of biodiversity and community structure of plastisphere in tropical environments, including bacteria and microalgae, and their potential to degrade the plastic polymer. A systematic literature search has been conducted using Scopus with different combinations of keywords. In addition, Google Scholar databases were also used to find more studies on some specific topics, including plastic degrading organisms. The climate-associated areas have been grouped according to the latitude of the study site into tropical, subtropical, and temperate latitudes. The microorganisms analyzed in this review are only bacteria, actinobacteria, and microalgae.

Pollution migration is the main problem of the landfills that have been located, installed and operated without meeting basic environmental protection requirements. Undertaking effective reclamation treatments is conditioned by a good recognition of the object and its close and distant surroundings. The purpose of the work was to determine the potential hazard to the soil and water environment, based on selected factors, in the vicinity of a closed waste landfill at Głębocka Street in Warsaw. In the soil samples taken at the site from various depths, high concentrations of chlorides, EC, ammonium nitrogen and phosphates were found. Furthermore, the high ammonium nitrogen content correlated with the scent of ammonia, and the content of phosphates with the scent of organic compounds. These pollutants testify to the progressive decomposition of substances occurring in the mass of littering waste, which may pose a serious threat to groundwater. The landfill is also a potential geotechnical hazard because it is a dynamically changing object that can change stability, create caverns and landslides.

The following elaboration presents a view on the tasks and challenges which should be faced by ecological engineering in the near future. The study also emphasizes the need to disseminate the concept of retarding the pace of transformation of ecosystems and natural resources as well as proper understanding and urgent implementation of strategically correct provisions from the existing legal acts. It also refers to the need to look for the effective methods of disseminating the activities for the protection of ecosystems, in which accepting the concept of “violence on the environment” may be helpful. The ecological engineering activity may be divided into: a) activities in natural areas, including rural ones, to protect and restore their ecosystem services, b) activities in increasingly biologically poorer urbanized and industrialized areas in order to create the conditions for the well-being of residents, in the reality of climate change and the prevention of further rapid change in the region, intensified by anthropogenic pressure, c) involvement in education. In the background of this division, the necessary activities of the active PTIE members include: 1) Discussing, analyzing and pointing out the problems of protection and rational use of the environment as well as natural and anthropogenic resources, 2) Organizing multidisciplinary scientific and educational conferences, 3) Development, publication and dissemination of knowledge in the field of counteracting the environmental degradation as well as the ways of protecting and rationalizing the use of the environment, 4) Cooperation with various organizations (including administration) in solving the ecological and economic problems, 5) Participation in the process of ecological legislation, 6) Opinions, eco-engineering and counseling for local communities.

Urban environmental problems are of different dimensions and are mostly due to geologic, climatic and cultural factors. However, the cultural factors seems to be more pronounced in the Nigerian context because most of the identified urban environmental issues are so much associated with the way of life of the people, either as reactions to urbanization or their spatial heritage. Their effects are far reaching on efforts to attain sustainable development in the country. Since no section of the country’s urban environment is immune to environmental effects, there is urgent need to seek workable solutions by the application of planning, economic, legal, institutional and educational tools as have been suggested here.
