Opis:
The protection and preservation of good groundwater quality is of critical importance worldwide, nowadays. Increasing urbanization, economic development and agricultural activities, combined with limited precipitation contribute to the quantitative and qualitative degradation of groundwater resources, especially in the eastern Mediterranean region. For this purpose, a series of actions are implemented including groundwater vulnerability mapping that can depict prone to pollution aquifers which need protection and/or restoration measures. In this study, the efficiency of two well-known methodologies (COP and DRASTIC) for groundwater vulnerability and pollution risk mapping was assessed in the Sperchios river basin. The vulnerability and pollution risk maps of the two methodologies were spatially compared to each other and the observed similarities and differences were discussed and explained. The output of the study shows that in the particular geoenvironmental conditions DRASTIC method performs better than the COP, particularly in the lowland, porous media aquifer.

The paper goal is to develop a spatial analyses of the most critical environmental issues in the country and how the population concerns could be addressed with the use of spatial technologies. Population perception of environment management relies on its minimum levels. In the recent past, static, fixed scale, multi use, highly accurate, permanent, paper maps compiled over a short period of time was the norm, meanwhile today’s world uses a dynamic, single use, variable accuracy, variable scale, digital product made from data possibly retrieved from database derived from multiple sources. The opportunity to combine spatial technology associated with numerical data leading to a structured and genuine analyzes of the country issues turns to be an optimal strategy. We structure a set of digital maps encouraging decision-makers to rely their performance on spatial tools. Coastline pollution stands as a top priority. For the purpose of the analysis, the entire coastline was divided into sectors. Hence, further investigations could be addressed toward space-time relationship to cover the environmental evolution process, which may serve as an input for future predictions.

This article is devoted to the study of water and sediment pollution in the channel of the Neva delta. Spectrophotometry was used to determine the concentration of pollutants in water. In the chemical analysis of the precipitate, atomic absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy were used. Analysis of the hydrochemical composition and sediment of the Smolenka River showed high concentrations of heavy metals and petroleum products. At the same time, the hydrochemical composition of the Smolenka River is highly unstable, but the concentration of oil products and lead in the sediments indicates the presence of local pollution sources. Based on our findings, we are guided by the restoration of the aquatic environment.

Excessive concentrations of smog toxicants constitute a critical factor influencing the health quality of inhabitants of urban agglomerations. The exposure to elevated concentrations of suspended particulate matter, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) is associated with an increase of adverse health effects. Prolonged exposure to air pollution, especially from low emission, may be linked not only to a greater risk of developing cancer of the respiratory system, or cardiovascular morbidity but also to the increased frequency of admissions to hospitals and emergency units as well as medical consultations in surgeries and outpatient clinics. The issue was investigated using the city of Cracow as an example. Attempts were made to find the connection between air pollution in the city of Cracow and the frequency of hospitalization and medical consultations of patients (registered in the city) due to lung and bronchial malignancy and cardiac dysrhythmia taking into account the data from the years 2010-2016 submitted by the Malopolska Regional Branch of the National Health Fund.

The condition of air quality depends on many external (the amount of pollutant emissions, intensity and type of physico-chemical changes taking place in the atmosphere and large-scale movement of air pollutant masses) as well as internal factors (such as finishing materials, room equipment, heating systems, ventilation systems, and the presence of the humans themselves). As a result, there are various risks related to air quality, including the most important ones related to microbial contamination. For this reason, it was decided to analyze the quality of internal air in terms of microbiological contamination that may occur in university lecture halls with mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation. The analysis also took into account the impact of mechanical ventilation on physical parameters such as temperature, relative humidity as well as the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 particulate matter pollutants, thus determining the impact of the tested parameters on human health and well-being. All the obtained results were compared with the applicable permissible standards and conclusions were drawn regarding the improvement of the quality of the indoor air microclimate.

The commonness of metal contamination, even at considerable distances from industrial centers and intensively used economic areas, has become the interest of many researchers. The issue of evaluating the state of the environment with the help of living organisms has become a very important part in the control of the natural environment. Honey bee (Apis mellifera L) is a good bioindicator as it is inextricably linked to the natural environment in which it lives. The aim of the research, and at the same time the main assumption of the study, was to evaluate the effectiveness of honeybees (Apis mellifera L) as bioindicators for the presence of Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn, Fe in the urban area (example of Bialystok city). The study includes pilot studies covering three sampling periods (March, June and September 2015). Analyses of metals were made by ASA method. The results showed the presence of Cu, Cr Zn, Mn and Fe in all bees samples. An increased content of Cr in bees was also found, which may be the result of the presence of this element in the environment (air, soil, water, plants, pollen) and in the impregnation agent applied to protect wooden elements of the bee hive. The research showed seasonal variation of metals in bees bodies. The main sources of studied metals in bee samples seem to be motorization, industry, and municipal economy within the urban area. Statistical calculations showed a common origin of majority of studied metals. Bee studies for metals contents can be an important element of a bio-monitoring of changing natural environment as a consequence of anthropogenic activity.

Opis:
Air pollution is a global problem. In Europe, ambient air quality remains poor in many areas, particularly in urban ones. Air pollutants have a significantly adverse effect on human health and ecosystems. They are the main cause of many serious illnesses and thus contribute to increased mortality. This paper analyzes the air pollutant emissions in the last four years (2018–2021) in the Upper Silesian Region, which has one of the worst air qualities in Poland and in Europe in general, and the emissions in the Lublin Region in eastern Poland, which is considered as a clean region. In each of the above-mentioned regions, the areas with the highest air pollutant emissions were specified i.e. the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and the Lublin Agglomeration. The emission data for the following pollutants: particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have been compared. The obtained results were also compared with the estimated average emissions in Poland. It was indicated that in both agglomerations the exposure to air pollutants was on similar levels, which were several times higher than in the remaining parts of the considered regions and the average values for Poland in general. In the Silesian Agglomeration, the exposure to PM10 was over 5 times higher than the average national exposure. The exposure to PM2.5 was almost 6 times higher, the exposure to BaP was about 5 times higher, while the exposure to SOx and NOx was 16 and 10 times higher than the national average, respectively. This is reflected in the increased number of premature deaths and the number of years of life lost due to the exposure to air pollution. Therefore, the actions aimed at limiting air pollutant emissions are urgent in the above-indicated areas.

The internal combustion engine is considered as one of the main sources for air pollution due to hydrocarbon fuel combustion. The increased land transport usage requires improvement of the engine efficiency and combustion process technology to reduce the engine emissions. A turbocharged engine and the gaseous fuel replacement are the green tools proposed by researchers to enhance fuel saving and emissions reduction. In this paper, both methods were investigated. The methane is a preferred gaseous fuel due to its lower carbon to hydrogen ratio, resulting in lesser HC and CO emissions. In this paper, a turbocharged compression ignition engine with methane/diesel dual fuel is simulated using professional GT-power code to investigate the effect of methane percentage in mixture on the engine performance and emissions. A turbocharged 6 cylinders compression ignition engine has been built and investigated. During the simulation, the methane/diesel ratios were varied from pure diesel with zero percent methane to 90% methane concentration by mass with 10% increment every run. The results show that the engine brake power and specific fuel consumption increased while the thermal efficiency decreased for lower CH4 concentration. For higher CH4 percentage, the brake power and thermal efficiency increased while specific fuel consumption decreased. Moreover, NO emission has 35% reduction compared to neat diesel fuel when 50% of methane was added to the mixture. Conversely, the CO and HC concentration increased when the methane ratio is less than 50% compared to neat diesel combustion. In general, the engine efficiency improved when methane was added to diesel fuel in compression ignition engine with turbocharger boost, resulting in lesser emissions and cleaner environment.

The control points were selected in such a way as to take into account the impact of major point sources of analyzed components located along the river and its main tributaries on water quality in the main stream catchment. Water samples were collected once a month during the period from May to November in 2014. In water samples the concentration of dissolved oxygen, Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+, P-PO43- and the values of pH, BOD5 and electrolytic conductivity were indicated. Based on the obtained results, loads of the individual components in river waters were calculated as a product of concentration and Supraśl waters flow rate in a particular month. Supraśl waters, due to values of most analyzed parameters, should be classified as first quality class. The source of Cl-, SO42-, N-NH4+ in Supraśl waters were treated wastewater and other anthropogenic sources associated with the basin development. Reduced Supraśl water quality is caused by the inflow of organic substances expressed by BZT5 from natural and anthropogenic origin and concentration of PO43-, which were mainly delivered with treated wastewater.

Batujai reservoir is located in Central Lombok Regency, Indonesia. The government and local people use it for hydropower generation, drinking water, agricultural irrigation, fish farming, and tourism. The phenomenon of growing population and increasing industrial activities in the catchment area of Batujai reservoir always result in the discharge of various pollutants into the aquatic environment and cause the blooming of water hyacinth over almost 30% of the reservoir area. The aim of this study was to determine the water pollution index of Batujai reservoir. The samples were analysed for the following parameters: pH, temperature, DO, COD, BOD, TSS, and heavy metals. The research was done by using purposive sampling method and determination of water quality status with STORET method based on Government Regulation No. 82/2001. The measurement results show that the physical and chemical parameters of the Batujai reservoir water do not exceed the quality standard are the temperature (29 to 32°C); pH (6.6 to 7.5 mg/L); nitrate (0.421 to 0.546 mg/L); Cd (0.0005 to 0.005 mg/L); Cr (<0.001 to 0.018 mg/L); and the parameters that exceed quality standards are DO (3.8 to 4.9 mg/L); BOD (3.03 to 4.21 mg/L); COD (6.8 to 10.1 mg/L); phosphate (0.181 to 0.237 mg/L); and Pb (0.14 to 0.24 mg/L). The water quality status of Batujai reservoir was heavily polluted for standard quality on class I, II, III and moderately polluted for class IV.

Recently, a lot of attention was paid to the improvement of methods which are used to air quality forecasting. Artificial neural networks can be applied to model these problems. Their advantage is that they can solve the problem in the conditions of incomplete information, without the knowledge of the analytical relationship between the input and output data. In this paper we applied artificial neural networks to predict the PM 10 concentrations as factors determining the occurrence of smog phenomena. To create these networks we used meteorological data and concentrations of PM 10. The data were recorded in 2014 and 2015 at three measuring stations operating in Krakow under the State Environmental Monitoring. The best results were obtained by three-layer perceptron with back-propagation algorithm. The neural networks received a good fit in all cases.

The main river of the Kosovo valley is the Sitnica River, which collects a large number of streams, recipients of wastewaterfrom various urban and industrial centers. The blockage of Sitnica river with waste and non-regulation of the bedding of this river makes this river flood tens of acres of worked ground surface through its course, causing great damage every spring and autumn. Uncontrolled discharge of heavy metals into the contaminated terrestrial environments ensures their transfer to plants, animals and humans and results in an impact on the environment and public health. Determination of the heavy metals concentration level for the assessment of soil pollution along the Sitnica River course was also the main purpose of this study, which was carried out in 2016. For analysis, 8 soil samples were taken at depths of 30–50 cm. From the analysis of the data it was noticed that the content of heavy metals such as Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr in some analyzed samples exceeds the maximum allowed values. The findings indicate high values of metal pollution in the samples taken in meadows as well as the agricultural lands stretching around the river.

In excessive concentrations, the tropospheric ozone (the so-called trioxygen O3) constitutes a serious threat to the ecosystems of our planet. It is a threat to the health and life of people. In plants, it contributes to disruption of the most important biochemical processes. The purpose of this study was to assess atmospheric air pollution with tropospheric ozone in selected rural villages of the Lubelskie region in the years 2015–2017. Assessment of air quality in the Lubelskie region in terms of the content of tropospheric ozone, which is significant for the protection of plants and human health, was carried out in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 24 August 2012 on the levels of certain substances in the air, as well as more restrictive guidelines of the World Health Organization. The research used the hourly values of automatic measurements of the tropospheric ozone immission in the years 2015–2017. The data originated from three measurement stations, which function as part of the Air Quality Monitoring System, in three rural communes located in the north-western, central and southern part of the Lubelskie region. As a result of implemented research, no tropospheric ozone concentrations exceeding the threshold values, at which the public should be informed about the risk of exceeding the alarm level, were noted. The highest mean tropospheric ozone immission was recorded during the calendar summer and calendar spring, while the lowest was recorded during the calendar winter and autumn. In terms of human health protection, the largest exceedances of the maximum mean 8-hour value of tropospheric ozone were recorded during the calendar summer at Florianka station, which was located at the highest position (270 m above sea level) in relation to other measurement stations covered by this study. In terms of plant protection, the mean tropospheric ozone concentration, expressed with the use of AOT40, did not exceed the applicable target level (18 000 μg∙m-3∙h) at any of the measurement stations. The highest mean value of AOT40 was recorded at the Florianka meteorological station (14 653.9 μg∙m-3∙h), while the lowest was recorded at the Jarczew station (7 486.2 μg∙m-3∙h).
