Opis:
Embryo development of Lupinus albus L. and L. mutabilis Sweet. after pollination with L. angustifolius L. was studied. Observations of ovules revealed non-typical embryo development. From the 5th day after pollination, high number of degenerated ovules was found; the highest number was observed on 15 and 20 days after pollination. The period between the 10th and 15th day after pollination was the most suitable for isolation of embryos in all the examined combinations, with exception L. albus x L. angustifolius where optimal isolation time was between 15th and 20 th day after pollination. Embryos were obtained in each cross-pollination. Some of them developed in vitro into plantlets and grew in an artificial medium for some time, but most of them died due to non-typical development of the root system, stem, or both. The hybrid character of the survived plants requires confirmation.

The pollen grain germination and the growth of pollen tubes after intra- and interspecific reciprocal pollination of Lupinus albus L., L. mutabilis Sweet, and L. angustifolius L. were examined. Results of microscopic observations of pollen grain germination and pollen tube growth enable to deny the existence of certain barriers that prevent fertilization after pollination of L. albus flowers with pollen of L. angustifolius and vice versa, as well as after pollination of L. mutabilis flowers with pollen of L. angustifolius and vice versa. Some delay in pollen grain germination and a slower growth of pollen tubes were observed in all combinations, as related to intraspecific ones, though in the case of each interspecific combination pollen tubes reached the ovary. Moreover, a different level of pollination efficiency (the number of growing pollen tubes) and various rates of pollen grain germination and pollen tube growth, depending on the direction of pollination, were found. The noted pollination efficiency may generally be considered to be low.

Opis:
Fusarium wilt is the most harmful soil-borne disease of lupins in Russia and in the Ukraine. The aim of the studies was to find broad resistance to disease in collection accessions and to breed lupin forms resistant to Fusarium wilt for the future breeding program. Lupin cultivars and lines (547 accessions) from the genebank of the N.I. Vavilov All Russian Scientific Research Institute of Plant Industry, St. Petersburg, Russia, were tested for Fusarium resistance under different environmental conditions of three regions in Russia and in the Ukraine on plots with artificially infested soil. So, differences in the disease susceptibility of the same accessions were found in contrasting environments. Resistant forms from one region were crossed with accessions showing their resistance in two other regions to accumulate resistance genes in new genotypes. As a result of hybridization two transgressive forms were obtained in F₄ of the crosses cv. Frost × cv. Apendrilon (L. angustifolius) and line G-413 × line 85 (L. luleus). Their resistance in all three regions appeared to be higher than that of their parental forms. These two lines were found suitable for the breeding programme of Fusarium resistant forms in Russia and in the Ukraine.

Opis:
In F₂, F₃ and F₄ generations of one hybrid line of Lupinus varius × L. digitatus, segregation into infertile and fertile plants in the ratio 3:1 was observed. Cytoembryological analyses showed that sterility was caused by irregularities in megasporocyte formation, in megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis. The following abnormalities lead to female sterility: no megasporogenic cells separated in nucelluses; in other nucelluses with megaspore mother cells, these cells underwent vacuolation and died before reduction division. In the megaspore mother cells, in which probably meiosis occurs, the megasporocyte division is irregular; a restitution nucleus is frequently formed after reduction division and such megasporocyte develops into an embryo sac. In 8-nucleate embryo sacs a change in the nucellus polarization was observed, while in rarely encountered embryo sacs the embryo cells underwent vacuolation and then died. Female sterility in the studied segregants is determined genetically, whereas sterilization of reproduction cells is a developing process throughout the period of sporocyte and female gametophyte formation.

Opis:
The inheritance of light-cream coloration of vegetative parts in yellow lupin plants was studied. It was found that this trait is inherited monomerically. In homozygous system the gene responsible for light-cream coloration has a plieotropic action. Among others it causes a lower fertility and reduction of seed yield per plant. In heterozygous system symptoms of heterosis are observed. In many aspects the action of dilutus gene is similar to that of dwarf gene in yellow lupin previously described by the authors of this paper.

Opis:
The paper is the second part of the studies on spontaneous tetraploids of Festuca pratensis, morphological characters of which were given in the previous article (WIŚNIEWSKA 1994). This paper deals with meiosis in PMCs of spontaneous tetraploids of Festuca pratensis and their F₁ progeny (2n=28) and describes the fertility of these plants in comparison to that of the colchitetraploid cv. Westa and diploid cv. Skrzeszowicka. Different chromosome parings were found in three spontaneous tetraploids. In tetraploid 4/2, most frequently quidrivalents (5.72 IV per 1 PMC) were observed, whereas in tetraploids 465/2 and 534/2, bivalents were prevailing (5.36 and 5.65 II per cell, respectively). The rest of chromosomes remained as univalents, formed trivalcnts and uncountable chromosome associations. Spontaneous tetraploid plants had dehiscent anthers and a high pollen grain fertility (from 78.0 to 94.5%). The degree of seed setting at self-pollination in these plants was low. However, at open pollination, they set a little less seeds than the diploid cv. Skrzeszowicka and the cv. Westa. The plant Si obtained from selfed of spontaneus tetraploids were all tetraploids (2n=28). Seeds obtained from open pollination of spontaneous tetraploids, gave rise to 160 plants of F₁ and all were also tetraploid. No large differences in chromosome pairing.were observed in plants of F₁. At metaphase I a predominant number of bivalents (from 4.72 to 6.05 II) and a smaller number of quadrivalents (from 3.96 to 4.63 IV), were observed. All the plants of F₁ and S₁ generations had dehiscent anthers. Pollen grain viability of Fi plants was high (88.0-90.0%) and similar to that of the parental forms (78.0-89.5%) in the same year of the studies. The average seed setting of all studied F₁ plants at self-pollination ranged from 0.15 to 0.22%, being lower than that of the parental forms. At open pollination it ranged from 34.2 to 36.0%, which was higher than or similar to that of the parental forms in the same year.

Opis:
A great progress had been made in narrow-leafed lupin in a comparatively short period. Despite elimination of basic disadvantages (hard seeds, high content of alkaloids, pod shattering) disease-resistant, unbranched and thermoneutral cultivars have been bred. Investigations on the variation range and inheritance mode of commercially important characters were followed by breeding achievements. The paper contains a review of references for 35 genes controlling alkaloid content, growth rhythm, branching, vegetation length, shape and color of leaves, color of flowers and seeds, seed hardiness, pod characters and disease resistance. Authors of characters and gene symbols from different research centres and from different years are given on the basis of priority. The importance of these genes for breeding improvement is discussed. Type lines for characters/genes and genotype of more important cultivars collected in the Polish narrow-leafed lupin genebank are presented.

Opis:
The article reviews the work of the author and coworkers on the use of electrophoretic protein analysis in taxonomie studies and classification of genetic resources of some leguminous plants: the genus Pisum, the Old-World Lupinus species and the cultivated Phaseolus species. On the example of the genus Pisum, the object of many years' investigations, the usefulness of electrophoretic analysis of different protein types - seed globulins, seed albumins and enzyme systems - is critically discussed. It has been concluded that variation in seed albumins, proteins often ignored in comparative analyses, should be more widely considered in taxonomie investigations. The conclusion was supported by the results obtained for Lupinus and Phaseolus species.
