Opis:
Agriculture is one of the sectors considered to be an extremely risky business. This has led to many farmers adopting different risk management strategies in order to deal with the prevailing risks. The objectives of the study were to identify the types of risk and risk management strategies; and to determine the level of risk management strategies adopted by small-scale vegetable farmers in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality. Descriptive statistics and the adoption index were employed to address these objectives. Purposive and snowball sampling procedures were used to select 40 small-scale vegetable farmers in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality. The study identified pest attacks and unfavorable weather conditions as the major risks faced by small scale vegetable farmers in the study area. Furthermore, the study revealed that majority of these farmers use pesticides, forward contracts and crop rotation as the risk management strategies.

Opis:
This study investigated the gender analysis of access to formal credit by both male and female small-scale farmers in the Greater Letaba Municipality. The study precisely identified and described the socio-economic characteristics of female and male small-scale farmers, analysed and compared factors influencing access to formal credit by both female and male small-scale farmers and determined the perceptions of female small-scale farmers towards the credit system. In collecting the primary data, structured questionnaires were administered on 140 respondents (70 females and 70 males) using stratified random technique. The study employed descriptive statistics, principal component analysis and probit model to analyse collected data. The probit regression model discovered that farm size, land ownership, gender, age, collateral and extension services had a significant positive influence on small-scale farmers` formal credit access. Based on the study findings, a set of recommendations for achieving equitable formal credit access by female and male small-scale farmers was put forward.

Opis:
This paper analysed the economic efficiency of small-scale tomato farmers in the Greater Letaba municipality of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Primary data were collected from 68 tomato farmers based on structured questionnaires and using convenience and purposive sampling procedures. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to analyse the level of economic efficiency. The study utilised the output approach, where the output achieved by the farmers is compared to the maximum output attainable using the given inputs. The empirical results reveal that mean technical, allocative, and economic efficiency levels are at 0.95, 0.41 and 0.39, respectively. The study also found that land (farm size), seedlings, labour, pesticides and water have a positively significant relationship with the production of tomatoes in the study area. Therefore, it is recommended that the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development provide farmers with enough extension services by employing more extension personnel. Government programmes such as the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme should be intensified – through the pillar of training and capacity building – to reach the small-scale farmers in the municipality, whereby farmers should be provided with training on the recommended minimum and maximum application of inputs like pesticides, fertilisers, seedlings and water in tomato production.

Opis:
Prior to the year 1970, agriculture was the main source of livelihood and backbone of the Nigerian economy until the discovery of oil drastically decelerated its potential to sustainably maintain food security and generate significant export earnings. Despite its sudden fall in productivity, agriculture still remains the main sector providing the highest employment (70% of the population) for the populace. To tackle these problems, many policies were formulated (from 1960 to 2015) to resuscitate the sector but to no availdue to failure in tailoring suitable policies to engage small-scale farmers and address other socio-economic problems. This paper constitutes an in-depth review of agricultural production and food security in Nigeria with relative importance attributed to local food supply and small-scale farmers. The article analyzes several documents of the Nigerian Government and international organizations, such as the Food and Agricultural Organization, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and a number of peer-reviewed journals across various disciplines to provide a balanced inter[1]disciplinary review. The paper concludes that food insecurity is at its peak in Nigeria and urgent attention is required in the agricultural sector to compensate for the unstable food balance in the country. There is a need for the Government to take strong measures against the food deficit situation and to support the development of the primary agriculture sector. The paper pro[1]poses viable policies that could involve smallholders, aid transformation and positively restructure the agricultural sector.

Opis:
Women’s economic empowerment has been South Africa’s policy priority since the country became a democracy. This paper examines the domains associated with the economic empowerment of small-scale female agro-processors in South Africa. A sequential exploratory mixed methods research design and a close-ended questionnaire were used to collect quantitative data from 503 small-scale agro-processors in five provinces. Qualitative data were collected during five focus group sessions aided by the focus group guide. The results show that production decision-making (β = 0,140; p = 0,003), access to productive resources (β = 0.140, p = 0.001), time allocation (β = 0.327, p = 0.000), and intervention (β = –0.353, p = 0.004) are the critical domains of small-scale agro-processing empowerment. The study revealed that only four domains of women’s economic empowerment have significantly improved the economic status of small-scale agro-processors. However, the combination of income, leadership, and intervention (β = 0.009, p = 0.015) was also a significant influencing factor. The study recommends that small-scale agroprocessors be provided with necessary policies and legislative control over their production decisions. This authority is coupled with broadening access to productive resources, time allocation, grants, leadership, and projects to actively empower these entrepreneurs.

Data Envelope Analysis, Small-scale grower, Benchmarking, Sugarcane production, Agriculture efficiency, Truncated regression
Opis:
South African small-scale sugarcane growers are faced with high production costs that have an impact on agricultural efficiency and their ability to adopt  newly available technologies for production purposes. This study employed the Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) approach and Truncated regression model to analyse data collected from 160 growers. The findings reported technical, cost and allocative mean scores to be 95.6,% 55.2%, and 57.5% in the Felixton region whereas 95.2%, 69.1% and 72.6% were achieved in the Amatikulu area, respectively. The age, extension support, and off-farm income had a negative effect on agricultural efficiency followed by positive effect of experience, education, access to credit and employment that showed positive relationship. We propose government to work jointly with mill owners to train, develop extension officers and subsidise inputs and equipment to address the poor allocation of resources because of financial constraints currently faced by small-scale sugarcane growers.

Opis:
The Purpose of the study was to analyse the effects of access to tractor service on technical efficiency among small-scale maize farmers following the implementation of Masibuyele Emasimini programme in Mpumalanga Province. Data collection was carried out in the districts of Mpumalanga province and these are: Ehlanzeni, Nkangala and Gert Sibande. Purposive sampling technique was used in identifying the three districts. A total of 101 small-scale maize farmers were purposively selected from the districts and used for the study. The study concluded that small-scale maize farmers do have access to tractor service rendered by the Masibuyele Emasimini programme, with 73% of farmers in Ehlanzeni and 60% in both Nkangala and Gert Sibande district that have access to the service, compared to 27% and 40% without access. Results indicate that there are socio-economic factors influencing small-scale maize farmers’ access to tractor service, for example, irrigation, inter alia. The Cobb-Douglas model found access to tractor service to be negative and insignificant in both Ehlanzeni and Nkangala district. The variable was however positive (although insignificant) in Gert Sibande. The study recommends that modern irrigation systems (preferably, sprinkler) should be provided as part of the programmes’ input list to contribute towards efficient maize production.

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence access to formal bank credit by small-scale farmers in the Greater Taung Municipality area. Understanding factors that determine access to formal credit should help improve productivity, food security and contribute to GDP (Gross Domestic Production). A structured questionnaire was used to sample 110 farmers from a total of 280 using a simple random approach. SPSS and Logistic regression were employed to analyse data. The findings revealed that, as the odds of credit need increases by one unit, access to formal credit increases more than 4 times and a similar explanation pertains to land ownership. Also, the perception towards risks, distance between lender and borrower, loan repayment and access to extension advice increase by 1 unit while there were progressive decreases in the odds for the actual need to access credit. All factors except land ownership was found to contribute significantly to access to credit in the study area. There is a need to establish loans offices closer to farms and operated by officers who understand farmers’ challenges within the area in order to simplify lending procedures and improve their perception towards formal credit.
Do analizy danych użyto oprogramowania SPSS i metod regresji logistycznej. Ponadto wzrostowi o jedną jednostkę zmiennych określających percepcję ryzyka, odległości pomiędzy kredytodawcą a kredytobiorcą, obawom o spłatę kredytu i dostępowi do usług upowszechniania wiedzy towarzyszy stopniowe obniżanie szans na wystąpienie faktycznej potrzeby dostępu do kredytu. Pozwoli to uprościć procedury kredytowe i poprawić sposób postrzegania kredytu.
