Opis:
Objective. The study investigated the associations between diagnosed musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), work ability and demographics, work and lifestyle characteristics in a public health institution with a variety of occupations. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a public health institution in Brazil. The subjects (n = 168) aged 20–69 answered a questionnaire on demographics, work, lifestyle characteristics and the work ability index. Results. A univariate regression analysis was carried out with the presence of MSD as a dependent variable. Association was found in relation to the age group, type of work demand, tenure at the institution, body mass index, work in the nutrition and laundry sectors, being a maid in the previous job, auxiliary service and auxiliary maintenance occupations, work ability in relation to physical and mental demands, estimated work impairment due to diseases, sick leave in the past year, own prognosis of work ability in 2 years’ time and mental resources: enjoying daily activities, being active and alert, being full of hope for the future. Conclusion. The presence of MSD affected several aspects of work ability.

Opis:
This paper presents an approach to assessing presenteeism (on-the-job productivity loss) that is related to perceived work ability. The aim of this explorative research was to find out if perceived work ability could be a robust indicator, interchangeable with presenteeism, in Finnish food industry organizations. The developed approach was based on existing presenteeism research as well as on register and survey data. The approach demonstrates that one step downward on the 10-point perceived work ability scale theoretically reduces employees’ on-the-job productivity by ~5 percentage points. At the company level, on-the-job productivity loss was 3.7% (mdn 0), while sickness absence was 5.0% (mdn 2.2). The probability of productivity loss among factory workers was fourfold compared to women in office work. The developed approach makes it possible to assess perceived productivity loss at the level of an individual and an organization. Perceived work ability may, in fact, be a robust indicator for assessing perceived productivity loss.

Opis:
Designing objective and subjective methods of studying the abilities of disabled people is one of the most important things to be done before employing them. That is why new assessment methods are proposed. Evaluation as a testing procedure used for defining the abilities of disabled people - general capacity, range, and strength of the main groups of muscles and extremities, psychological tests, and many others—were developed by an interdisciplinary team. In total, 48 testing procedures, including physiological, psychological, and biomechanical ones, were prepared. We also propose another subjective assessment method because it is also very important to know what an individual person with disability needs, wants to do, or what kind of job he or she prefers. The subjective evaluation of abilities, possibilities, and needs might be done by using a questionnaire. These testing procedures offer a chance to use the same methods in all diagnostic centres so the criteria of health and work ability will be the same and easily comparable. Using the same tests for assessment will be helpful in observing the results and progress of medical, social, and vocational rehabilitation, too.

Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine the associations between demographics, work, lifestyle, housework, and the work ability of workers. Methods. Employees between the ages of 20 and 69 (N = 651), employed at a Brazilian public institution, responded to a questionnaire on demographics, work, lifestyle characteristics, and work ability. Results. Work ability decreased significantly with age among the women. The younger group had higher scores on the work ability index than the older age groups, except for mental resources. The logistic regression analysis showed that higher age, lower education, and long work history at the institution were significantly associated with reduced work ability. Conclusions. The progressive aging, the low level of education, and the long duration work in the studied institution were related to a reduction in work ability, which increases the risk of work disability or early retirement.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the work ability in ageing workers suffering from osteoarthritis (OA), coronary heart disease (CHD) or hypertension (H). One hundred and sixty-six OA and 355 CHD/H outpatients were evaluated. The Work Ability Index (WAI) served for work ability assessment. Patients’ results were compared with the results of a control group of 225 healthy young workers. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA tests. WAI in female and male CHD/H patients was higher than in OA patients (p < .01), better work ability was related to better education (p < .01), white-collar work (p < .01) and better recreation (p < .01); subjective work ability was determined mostly by the objective health status. The promotion of work ability among workers suffering from advanced age-related diseases should be closely related to the promotion of health. It is indicative to improve occupational education and skills, already at an early stage of a disease.

Opis:
Aims. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence and intensity of musculoskeletal pain as a risk factor for reduced work ability. Methods. In total, 1449 workers participated in the study, 64% were younger workers (<45 years old, M 31.4); 36% were ageing workers (≥45 years old, M 50.3), Their health condition was established on the basis of (a) subjective feeling of health on a 5-point scale, (b) pain in 6 parts of the body in the past year; and (c) intensity of pain on a 100-mm visual analogue scale (VAS). Work ability was assessed with the subjective work ability index (WAI). Results. The results of the study showed that although in the both groups, i.e., younger and ageing workers, the occurrence and intensity of pain in the hands/wrists, neck and lower back were a significant factor which decreased WAI, in ageing workers only the occurrence of pain in the lower back generated higher risk factors for reduced work ability (WAI < 37). Conclusions. Improving physical and psychosocial working conditions to reduce musculoskeletal complaints, and identifying individuals with such complaints are important in increasing workers’ work ability and thus extending their occupational activity.

Opis:
Noise measurements and questionnaire inquiries were carried out for 124 workers of a rolling stock plant to develop a hearing conservation program. On the basis of that data, the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) was evaluated. Additionally, the workers’ hearing ability was assessed with the (modified) Amsterdam inventory for auditory disability and handicap, (m)AIADH. The workers had been exposed to noise at A-weighted daily noise exposure levels of 74–110 dB for 1-40 years. Almost one third of the workers complained of hearing impairment and the (m)AIADH results showed some hearing difficulties in over half of them. The estimated risk of hearing loss over 25 dB in the frequency range of 3-6 kHz was 41–50% when the standard method of predicting NIHL specified in Standard No. ISO 1999:1990 was used. This risk increased to 50-67% when noise impulsiveness, coexposure to organic solvents, elevated blood pressure and smoking were included in calculations.
