Opis:
An efficient C0 continuous finite element (FE) model is developed based on a combined theory (refine higher order shear deformation theory (RHSDT) and least square error (LSE) method) for the static analysis of a soft core sandwich plate. In this (RHSDT) theory, the in-plane displacement field for the face sheets and the core is obtained by superposing a global cubically varying displacement field on a zig-zag linearly varying displacement field with a different slope in each layer. The transverse displacement assumes to have a quadratic variation within the core and it remains constant in the faces beyond the core. The proposed model satisfies the condition of transverse shear stress continuity at the layer interfaces and the zero transverse shear stress condition at the top and bottom of the sandwich plate. The nodal field variables are chosen in an efficient manner to circumvent the problem of C1 continuity requirement of the transverse displacements. In order to calculate the accurate through thickness transverse stresses variation, the Least Square Error (LSE) method has been used at the post processing stage. The proposed combined model (RHSDT and LSE) is implemented to analyze the laminated composites and sandwich plates. Many new results are also presented which should be useful for future research.

Opis:
Finite element and response surface methods were utilized to investigate the stress concentration factor induced in isotropic rectangular plates with two identical countersunk rivet holes due to uniaxial tension. In this investigation, the finite element model was constructed using ANSYS software and used to produce stress concentration factor (SCF) data. Additionally, the response surface method (RSM) was implemented to characterize the influence of the problem geometric parameters on the SCF. Besides, RSM combined with least squares regression methods were employed to formulate a simple and effective equation to mathematically compute the stress concentration factor […] value. This equation was consequently verified with finite element analysis (FEA) results. Lastly, an optimum plate and holes configuration that minimizes the SCF was suggested and hence recommended.

This work investigates a three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) nanofluid flow with heat and mass transfer over a porous stretching sheet. Firstly, partial differential equations are transformed into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations through a similarity variables transformation and solved by Galerkin Finite Element Methods (FEM). The effects of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and chemical reaction on the fluid flow are considered. The behaviour and properties of pertinent flow parameters on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are presented and discussed graphically. The effects of the friction coefficient parameter, Nusselt and Sherhood numbers are also shown and considered using tables. The work is in good agreement in comparison with the recent work in literature.

This paper presents an analysis of a parallelogram mechanism commonly used to provide a kinematic remote center of motion in surgical telemanipulators. Selected types of parallel manipulator designs, encountered in commercial and laboratory-made designs described in the medical robotics literature, will serve as the research material. Among other things, computer simulations in the ANSYS 13.0 CAD/CAE software environment, employing the finite element method, will be used. The kinematics of the solution of manipulator with the parallelogram mechanism will be determined in order to provide a more complete description. These results will form the basis for the decision regarding the possibility of applying a parallelogram mechanism in an original prototype of a telemanipulator arm.

In the paper a nonlinear model of a lattice-boom crane with lifting capacity up to 700mT for static analysis is presented. The rigid finite element method is used for discretisation of the lattice-boom and the mast. Flexibility of rope systems for vertical movement and for lifting a load is also taken into account. The computer programme developed enables forces and stress as well as displacements of the boom to be calculated. The model is validated by comparison of the authors’ own results with those obtained using professional ROBOT software. Good compatibility of results has been obtained.

Opis:
The main aim of this paper is to present a Stochastic Finite Element Method analysis with reference to principal design parameters of bridges for pedestrians: eigenfrequency and deflection of bridge span. They are considered with respect to random thickness of plates in boxed-section bridge platform, Young modulus of structural steel and static load resulting from crowd of pedestrians. The influence of the quality of the numerical model in the context of traditional FEM is shown also on the example of a simple steel shield. Steel structures with random parameters are discretized in exactly the same way as for the needs of traditional Finite Element Method. Its probabilistic version is provided thanks to the Response Function Method, where several numerical tests with random parameter values varying around its mean value enable the determination of the structural response and, thanks to the Least Squares Method, its final probabilistic moments.

A numerical technique is employed to derive a solution to the transient natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past an impulsively started infinite isothermal vertical plate with uniform mass diffusion in the presence of a magnetic field and homogeneous chemical reaction of first order. The governing equations are solved using implicit finite-difference method. The effects of velocity, temperature and concentration for different parameters such as the magnetic field parameter, chemical reaction parameter, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, thermal Grashof number and mass Grashof number are studied. It is observed that the fluid velocity decreases with increasing the chemical reaction parameter and the magnetic field parameter.

Opis:
The purpose of this research is to specify the differences between the performance of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and reinforced concrete (RC) walls. The study is done by using the finite element structural analysis and design software, StruSoft FEM-Design, in order to model, analyse and design a reference building located in the city of Gävle in Sweden. The building is firstly modelled, analysed and designed using RC walls and then the RC walls are replaced with CLT walls. In both buildings, other load-bearing elements such as slabs, beams and columns are made of RC while the roof beams are made of glulam. It is found that employing RC has advantages, especially regarding thickness. The results show that the CLT walls require larger dimensions than their RC counterparts. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that the slabs, beams and columns made of RC in the building having the CLT walls require more reinforcement or larger thickness than the case of walls made of RC. Moreover, the total weight of the building having the CLT walls is 74% of the building having the RC walls. The lower weight of the building having the CLT walls has great advantages such as having lighter foundation and being cost-effective and also beneficial for the environment.

An efficiency of the generalized tenth order stochastic perturbation technique in determination of the basic probabilistic characteristics of up to the fourth order of dynamic response of Euler-Bernoulli beams with Gaussian uncertain damping is verified in this work. This is done on civil engineering application of a two-bay reinforced concrete beam using the Stochastic Finite Element Method implementation and its contrast with traditional Monte-Carlo simulation based Finite Element Method study and also with the semi-analytical probabilistic approach. The special purpose numerical implementation of the entire Stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method has been entirely programmed in computer algebra system MAPLE 2019 using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. Further usage of the proposed technique to analyze stochastic reliability of the given structure subjected to dynamic oscillatory excitation is also included and discussed here because of a complete lack of the additional detailed demands in the current European designing codes.

Opis:
The main goal of this paper is to present coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and structural analysis for the precise determination of wind impact on internal forces and deformations of structural elements of a longspan roof structure. The Finite Volume Method (FVM) serves for a solution of the fluid flow problem to model the air flow around the structure, whose results are applied in turn as the boundary tractions in the Finite Element Method problem structural solution for the linear elastostatics with small deformations. The first part is carried out with the use of ANSYS 15.0 computer system, whereas the FEM system Robot supports stress analysis in particular roof members. A comparison of the wind pressure distribution throughout the roof surface shows some differences with respect to that available in the engineering designing codes like Eurocode, which deserves separate further numerical studies. Coupling of these two separate numerical techniques appears to be promising in view of future computational models of stochastic nature in large scale structural systems due to the stochastic perturbation method.

This research focuses on studying the effect of the constitutive law adopted for a matrix material on the compressive response of a unidirectional fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite. To investigate this effect, a periodic unit cell model of a unidirectional composite with an initial fiber waviness and inelastic behavior of the matrix was used. The sensitivity of the compressive strength to the hydrostatic pressure, the flow rule and the fiber misalignment angle were presented. The model was verified against an analytical solution and experimental data. Results of this study indicate that a micromechanical model with correctly identified material parameters provides a useful alternative to theoretical models and experimentation.

The vibration characteristics of stiffened plates with cutouts subjected to in-plane partial edge loadings at one end at the plate boundaries are studied using the finite element method. Buckling loads and vibration frequencies are determined for different cutout ratios and extent of partial edge loading at one end. In the structural modelling, the plate and the stiffeners are treated as separate elements where the compatibility between these two types of elements is maintained. The main elegance of the formulation lies in the treatment of the stiffeners. The stiffeners can be placed anywhere within the plate element, and need not be placed on the nodal lines. The vibration characteristics are discussed and the results are compared with those available in the literature. Numerical results are presented for a range of cutout to plate size from 0 to 0.8.

The forced vibration of a multi-layered plate-strip with initial stress under the action of an arbitrary inclined time-harmonic force resting on a rigid foundation is considered. Within the framework of the piecewise homogeneous body model with the use of the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies (TLTEWISB), a mathematical modelling is presented in plane strain state. It is assumed that there exists the complete contact interaction at the interface between the layers and the materials of the layer are linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The governing system of the partial differential equations of motion for the considered problem is solved approximately by employing the Finite Element Method (FEM). Further, the influence of the initial stress parameter on the dynamic response of the plate-strip is presented.

Three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out with the ABAQUS/explicit finite element code to study the influence of target boundary conditions on its ballistic limit. 1mm thick 1100-H12 aluminum target of 255 mm span diameter was hit by 19 mm diameter and 50.8 mm length blunt nosed projectile. The mass of the projectile was kept as 52.5 gm. The boundary condition effects on the ballistic limit were investigated by varying the target periphery boundary condition as fully clamped and partially clamped target (75%, 50% and 25%) subjected to projectile impact. The energy absorption and ballistic limit of the target was found to be significantly affected by the boundary conditions. Some of the finite element analysis results were compared with experimental and numerical results reported in international literature and a good agreement between the two was found.

It is widely known that lateral-torsional buckling of a member under bending and warping restraints of its cross-sections in the steel structures are crucial for estimation of their safety and durability. Although engineering codes for steel and aluminum structures support the designer with the additional analytical expressions depending even on the boundary conditions and internal forces diagrams, one may apply alternatively the traditional Finite Element or Finite Difference Methods (FEM, FDM) to determine the so-called critical moment representing this phenomenon. The principal purpose of this work is to compare three different ways of determination of critical moment, also in the context of structural sensitivity analysis with respect to the structural element length. Sensitivity gradients are determined by the use of both analytical and the central finite difference scheme here and contrasted also for analytical, FEM as well as FDM approaches. Computational study is provided for the entire family of the steel I- and H - beams available for the practitioners in this area, and is a basis for further stochastic reliability analysis as well as durability prediction including possible corrosion progress.
