Opis:
The article proposes a new analytical method for the calculation of plates with constant and variable rigidity parameters. This method renders it possible to decrease the weight of the plates working under hydrostatic pressure by using variable thicknesses. Firs, a short overview of existing calculation methods and their results are compared. It is shown that all existing methods depend on boundary conditions. Then is given the theory of the proposed calculation method is described and calculations for plates with constant and variable thickness worked under uniformly loaded forces and hydrostatic pressure are made. The results are compared to the FEM calculations and experimental results obtained by a tensile test machine and special equipment. Calculation results obtained by the proposed analytical method and FEM results are very close. Deviations are not more than 11%. Deviations between theoretical calculations and experimental results depend on loading type and design of the test specimens but maximum values are not more than 17%. The proposed calculation method does not depend on the boundary conditions and can be used for plate calculations. Especially for plates with difficult design and complex loading.

Opis:
The deflection analysis of beams has been recently an active area of research. The large deflection of beams refers to deflections occurring due to large displacements and small strains. This type of deflection has been one of the areas of interest in the development of beam deformation methods. The wide diversity of beam deformation methods highlights the importance of their comparison to further elucidate the properties and features of each method and determine their benefits and limitations. In this study, a new comparison model is introduced which involves three steps, instead of only comparing final results for verification in common studies. In the first step, a complete comparison is made based on the assumptions and approximations of each method of the kinematics of deformation, displacement, and strain fields. After selecting the most accurate method in the first step, the displacement functions are determined by polynomial approximation under different loading and support conditions based on the selected method. In the third step, the displacement functions are used to calculate the strains in each method. The conclusion is based on comparing the strains. This comparative model can be used as a benchmark to compare different theories of deformation analysis.

Opis:
The global population is increasing annually; thus, there is a need for more housing and buildings worldwide. As cities grow outward and buildable lands become scarce, it is necessary to increase the height of existing buildings in cities, especially where the height of the buildings is low. For crowded cities, the storey extension is an increasingly popular measure that can meet market demand for centrally located houses. This paper examines the possibility of the vertical extension of an existing (reference) reinforced concrete building in Gävle in Sweden. The StruSoft FEM-Design program is employed to carry out the research. The building is firstly modelled, analysed, and designed completely. Thereafter, a storey extension is conducted vertically. The stresses and utilisation ratios of the load-bearing elements of the reference and extended buildings are assessed. It is found that some of the load-bearing elements of the building after the extension need strengthening. Different practical strengthening solutions are proposed. It is concluded that the building can successfully withstand the vertical extension after applying these proposed solutions. The maximum vertical reaction forces of the reference and extended buildings are obtained and compared. A comparison of the deflections of the buildings is made. The structural stability of the buildings is evaluated as well.

Opis:
This study investigates the inelastic stability of a thin flat rectangular isotropic plate subjected to uniform uniaxial compressive loads using Taylor-Maclaurin series formulated deflection function. The plate has clamped and simply supported edges in both characteristic directions (CCSS boundary conditions). The governing equation is derived using a deformation plasticity theory and a work principle. Values of the plate buckling coefficient are calculated for aspect ratios from 0.1 to 2.0 at intervals of 0.1. The results compared favourably with the elastic stability values and the percentage differences ranged from -0.353% to -7.427%. Therefore, the theoretical approach proposed in this study is recommended for the inelastic stability analysis of thin flat rectangular isotropic plates under uniform in-plane compression.

Opis:
This paper presents an update of the slope-deflection method, which is used in the analysis of statically indeterminate structures. In this study, new reduced equations are presented based on including both the effects of the member rotations and the fixed end moments in one term, rather than two terms, in order to simplify the application of the slope-deflection method. The reduced equations are developed, then three numerical examples with comprehensive cases of beams are solved by applying both the original and the proposed reduced equations. The analysis outputs indicated that the reduced equations are applicable for all cases that can be analyzed by the slope-deflection method, and give identical results compared with the original equations. It is found that the reduced equations require less computations when the structure has no support settlement, compared with the original equations, whereas the computations are approximately similar when the structure has a support settlement.

Opis:
In this article, a time fractional-order theory of thermoelasticity is applied to an isotropic homogeneous elliptical disk. The lower and upper surfaces of the disk are maintained at zero temperature, whereas the sectional heat supply is applied on the outer curved surface. Thermal deflection and associated thermal stresses are obtained in terms of Mathieu function of the first kind of order 2n. Numerical evaluation is carried out for the temperature distribution, Thermal deflection and thermal stresses and results of the resulting quantities are depicted graphically.
