JLQG problem
Opis:
In this paper the adaptive control problem for a continuous infinite time-varying stochastic control system with jumps in parameters and quadratic cost is investigated. It is assumed that the unknown coefficients of the system have limits as time tends to infinity and the boundary system is absolutely observable and stabilizable. Under these assumptions it is shown that the optimal value of the quadratic cost can be reached based only on the values of these limits, which, in turn, can be estimated through strongly consistent estimators.

Opis:
A circle criterion is obtained for a SISO Lur'e feedback control system consisting of a nonlinear static sector-type controller and a linear boundary control system in factor form on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert state space H previously introduced by the authors (Grabowski and Callier, 1999). It is assumed for the latter that (a) the observation functional is infinite-time admissible, (b) the factor control vector satisfies a compatibility condition, and (c) the transfer function belongs to Hinfty(Pi+) and satisfies a frequency-domain inequality of the circle criterion type. We also require that the closed-loop system be well-posed, i.e. for any initial state x0in H the truncated input and output signals uT, yT belong to L2(0,T) for any T>0. The technique of the proof adapts Desoer-Vidyasagar's circle criterion method (Desoer and Vidyasagar, 1975, Ch.3, Secs.1 and 2, pp.37-43, Ch.5, Sec.2, pp.139-142 and Ch.6, Secs.3 and 4, pp.172-174]), and uses the input-output map developed by the authors (Grabowski and Callier, 2001). The results are illustrated by two transmission line examples: (a) that of the loaded distortionless RLCG type, and (b) that of the unloaded RC type. The conclusion contains a discussion on improving the results by the loop-transformation technique.

Distillation processes reveal complicated multivariable nonlinear dynamics for which it is difficult to design a high-performance control system. This paper proposes an adaptive control scheme for a distillation column. The proposed adaptive system consists of a multivariable receding-horizon predictive controller using a transfer function model and a recursive least-squares (RLS) based estimator. Simulations show a consistent closed-loop performance despite the uncertain nonlinear characteristics of the distillation column.

The paper presents the training problem of a set of neural nets to obtain a (gain-scheduling, adaptive) multivariable neural controller for control of a nonlinear MIMO dynamic process represented by a mathematical model of Low-Frequency (LF) motions of a drillship over the drilling point at the sea bottom. The designed neural controller contains a set of neural nets that determine values of its parameters chosen on the basis of two measured auxiliary signals. These are the ship’s current forward speed measured with respect to water and the systematically calculated difference between the course angle and the sea current (yaw angle). Four different methods for synthesis of multivariable modal controllers are used to obtain source data for training the neural controller with parameters reproduced by neural networks. Neural networks are designed on the basis of 3650 modal controllers obtained with the use of the pole placement technique after having linearized the model of LF motions made by the vessel at its nominal operating points in steady states that are dependent on the specified yaw angle and the sea current velocity. The final part of the paper includes simulation results of system operation with a neural controller along with conclusions and final remarks.

The problem of linear feedback design for bilinear control systems guaranteeing their conditional closed-loop stability is considered. It is shown that this problem can be reduced to investigating the conditional stability of solutions of quadratic systems of differential equations depending on parameters of the control law. Sufficient conditions for stability in the cone of a homogeneous quadratic system are obtained. For second-order systems, invariant conditions of conditional asymptotic stability are found.

Opis:
In the paper an adaptive linear control system structure with modal controllers for a MIMO nonlinear dynamic process is presented and various methods for synthesis of those controllers are analyzed. The problems under study are exemplified by the synthesis of a position and yaw angle control system for a drillship described by a 3DOF nonlinear mathematical model of low-frequency motions made by the drillship over the drilling point. In the proposed control system, use is made of a set of (stable) linear modal controllers that create a linear adaptive controller with variable parameters tuned appropriately to operation conditions chosen on the basis of two measured auxiliary signals. These are the ship’s current forward speed measured in reference to the water and the systematically calculated difference between the course angle and the sea current (yaw angle). The system synthesis is carried out by means of four different methods for system pole placement after having linearized the model of low-frequency motions made by the vessel at its nominal “operating points” in steady states that are dependent on the specified yaw angle and the sea current velocity. The final part of the paper includes simulation results of system operation with an adaptive controller of (stepwise) varying parameters along with conclusions and final remarks.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of fundamental limitations regarding closed-loop control performance of discrete-time nonlinear systems subject to hard constraints (which are nonlinear in state and manipulated input variables). The control performance for the problem of interest is quantified by the decline (decay) of the generalized energy of the controlled system. The paper develops (upper and lower) barriers bounding the decay of the system’s generalized energy, which can be achieved over a set of asymptotically stabilizing feedback laws. The corresponding problem is treated without the loss of generality, resulting in a theoretical framework that provides a solid basis for practical implementations. To enhance understanding, the main results are illustrated in a simple example.

This paper details a proposal for the position control system of a two-axis ship-mounted tracker. Aspects of the non-linear dynamics governing Line-Of-Sight (LOS) errors between the tracker and the target are presented. It is shown that the regulation of LOS errors can be achieved by introducing a feed-forward term based on the target’s velocity. This velocity is not measurable, and an estimator is required. Given that the tracking problem is non-linear, the classical separation principle does not hold, and cascading the estimator and regulator together may not lead to an optimal position control system. The ‘LQAdaptive’ system proposed here aims therefore to improve conformity to the separation principle. Simulation trials show that tracking is improved under the LQAdaptive system in comparison to a simple estimator-regulator structure.

A constrained adaptive predictive control method that uses uncertain process modelling based on orthonormal series functions is considered. Such unstructured modelling is described as a weighted sum of orthonormal functions using approximate information about the time constant of the process. The orthonormal series functions model can thus be used to derive a j-step-ahead output prediction according to the constrained adaptive predictive control law. In relation to predictive controllers based on structured models, this approach presents the advantage of not requiring prior knowledge of the order or time delay, which decrease prediction errors and lead to a better closed loop performance when these parameters are not well known. Stability issues of the proposed control scheme are discussed and, finally, a simulation example is given to show the performance of the algorithm.

Opis:
Predictive control algorithms have been worked out mainly to control linear plants. There is a great demand to apply different control ideas to nonlinear systems. Using predictive control algorithms for nonlinear systems is a promising technique. Extended horizon one-step-ahead and long-range optimal predictive control algorithms are given here for the parametric Volterra model (which includes also the generalized Hammerstein model). A quadratic cost function is minimized which considers the quadratic deviations of the reference signal and the output signal at a future point (or points) beyond the dead time and also penalizes large control signal increments. For prediction of the output signal, a predictive model is applied which uses information about the input and output signals up to the current time. A predictive transformation of the nonlinear dynamic model is given. The incremental model is advantageous since the cost function contains the control increment and not the control signal itself. An incremental transformation of the predictive forms is also described. Sub-optimal solutions to the optimal control algorithms are discussed with different assumptions for the control signal during the control horizon. The effect of the different strategies and the effect of the tuning parameters is investigated through simulation examples.

Some important comments are also presented on existing results for the stochastic controllability of fractional dynamical systems.

The paper presents several solutions to the discrete-time generalized predictive (GPC) controller problem, including an anticipative filtration mechanism, which are suitable for plants with nonzero transportation delays. Necessary modifications of the GPC design procedure required for controlling plants based on their non-minimal models are discussed in detail. Although inevitably invoking the troublesome pole-zero cancellation problem, such models can be used in adaptive systems as a remedy for the uncertainty or variability of the model order. The purpose of this paper is to present a complete GPC controller design for delay plants that is robust to the overparameterization of the plant model. Refined conditions for the existence and stability of GPC control solutions in terms of pertinent design parameters are given, and explicit forms of closed-loop characteristic polynomials are provided. The issue of identifying the model cancellation order is also considered, and practical solutions are proposed. The presented ideas are illustrated numerically.

Opis:
Motion planning, i.e., steering a system from one state to another, is a basic question in automatic control. For a certain class of systems described by ordinary differential equations and called flat systems (Fliess et al., 1995; 1999a), motion planning admits simple and explicit solutions. This stems from an explicit description of the trajectories by an arbitrary time function y, the flat output, and a finite number of its time derivatives. Such explicit descriptions are related to old problems on Monge equations and equivalence investigated by Hilbert and Cartan. The study of several examples (the car with n-trailers and the non-holonomic snake, pendulums in series and the heavy chain, the heat equation and the Euler-Bernoulli flexible beam) indicates that the notion of flatness and its underlying explicit description can be extended to infinite-dimensional systems. As in the finite-dimensional case, this property yields simple motion planning algorithms via operators of compact support. For the non-holonomic snake, such operators involve non-linear delays. For the heavy chain, they are defined via distributed delays. For heat and Euler-Bernoulli systems, their supports are reduced to a point and their definition domain coincides with the set of Gevrey functions of order 2.
