Opis:
This paper proposes a discretization technique for a descriptor differential system. The methodology used is both triangular first order hold discretization and zero order hold for the input function. Upper bounds for the error between the continuous and the discrete time solution are produced for both discretization methods and are shown to be better than any other existing method in the literature.

Opis:
Fractional-order PID (FOPID) controllers have been used extensively in many control applications to achieve robust control performance. To implement these controllers, curve fitting approximation techniques are widely employed to obtain integer-order approximation of FOPID. The most popular and widely used approximation techniques include the Oustaloup, Matsuda and Cheraff approaches. However, these methods are unable to achieve the best approximation due to the limitation in the desired frequency range. Thus, this paper proposes a simple curve fitting based integer-order approximation method for a fractional-order integrator/differentiator using frequency response. The advantage of this technique is that it is simple and can fit the entire desired frequency range. Simulation results in the frequency domain show that the proposed approach produces better parameter approximation for the desired frequency range compared with the Oustaloup, refined Oustaloup and Matsuda techniques. Furthermore, time domain and stability analyses also validate the frequency domain results.

Opis:
We introduce a novel fractional order adaptive control design based on the tube model reference adaptive control (TMRAC) scheme for a class of fractional order linear systems. By considering an adaptive state feedback control configuration, the main idea is to replace the classical reference model with a single predetermined trajectory by a fractional order performance tube guidance model allowing a set of admissible trajectories. Besides, an optimization problem is formulated to compute an on-line correction control signal within specified bounds in order to update the system performance while minimizing a control cost criterion. The asymptotic stability of the closed loop fractional order control system is demonstrated using an extension of the Lyapunov direct method. The dynamical performance of the fractional order tube model reference adaptive control (FOTMRAC) is compared with the standard fractional order model reference adaptive control (FOMRAC) strategy, and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

This paper considers a method of designing fractional-order observers for continuous-time linear fractional-order systems with unknown inputs. Conditions for the existence of these observers are given. Sufficient conditions for the asymptotical stability of fractional-order observer errors with the fractional order α satisfying 0 < α < 2 are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach, where the fractional order α belongs to 1 ≤ α < 2 and 0 < α ≤1, respectively. A stability analysis of the fractional-order error system is made and it is shown that the fractional-order observers are as stable as their integer order counterpart and guarantee better convergence of the estimation error.

A new very high-order finite volume method to solve problems with harmonic and biharmonic operators for one-dimensional geometries is proposed. The main ingredient is polynomial reconstruction based on local interpolations of mean values providing accurate approximations of the solution up to the sixth-order accuracy. First developed with the harmonic operator, an extension for the biharmonic operator is obtained, which allows designing a very high-order finite volume scheme where the solution is obtained by solving a matrix-free problem. An application in elasticity coupling the two operators is presented. We consider a beam subject to a combination of tensile and bending loads, where the main goal is the stress critical point determination for an intramedullary nail.

In this paper a novel method of noise reduction in color images is presented. The new technique is capable of attenuating both impulsive and Gaussian noise, while preserving and even enhancing the sharpness of the image edges. Extensive simulations reveal that the new method outperforms significantly the standard techniques widely used in multivariate signal processing. In this work we apply the new noise reduction method for the enhancement of the images of the so called gene chips. We demonstrate that the new technique is capable of reducing the impulsive noise present in microarray images and that it facilitates efficient spot location and the estimation of the gene expression levels due to the smoothing effect and preservation of the spot edges. This paper contains a comparison of the new technique of impulsive noise reduction with the standard procedures used for the processing of vector valued images, as well as examples of the efficiency of the new algorithm when applied to typical microarray images.

The problem of linear feedback design for bilinear control systems guaranteeing their conditional closed-loop stability is considered. It is shown that this problem can be reduced to investigating the conditional stability of solutions of quadratic systems of differential equations depending on parameters of the control law. Sufficient conditions for stability in the cone of a homogeneous quadratic system are obtained. For second-order systems, invariant conditions of conditional asymptotic stability are found.

A stabilization problem of second-order systems by non-linear feedback is considered. We discuss the case when only position feedback is available. The non-linear stabilizer is constructed by placing actuators and sensors in the same location and by using a parallel compensator. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved by LaSalle's theorem. The distinctive feature of the solution is that no transformation to a first-order system is invoked. The results of analytic and numerical computations are included to verify the theoretical analysis and the mathematical formulation.

The finite element method (FEM) is applied to obtain numerical solutions to a recently derived nonlinear equation for the shallow water wave problem. A weak formulation and the Petrov–Galerkin method are used. It is shown that the FEM gives a reasonable description of the wave dynamics of soliton waves governed by extended KdV equations. Some new results for several cases of bottom shapes are presented. The numerical scheme presented here is suitable for taking into account stochastic effects, which will be discussed in a subsequent paper.

A special description of the boundary variation in a shape optimization problem is investigated. This, together with the use of a potential theory for the state, result in natural embedding of the problem in a Banach space. Therefore, standard differential calculus can be applied in order to prove the Frechet-differentiability of the cost function for appropriately chosen data (sufficiently smooth). Moreover, necessary optimality conditions are obtained in a similar way as in other approaches, and are expressed in terms of an adjoint state for more regular data.

Opis:
In this paper, a stability analysis of interconnected discrete-time fractional-order (FO) linear time-invariant (LTI) state-space systems is presented. A new system is formed by interconnecting given FO systems using cascade, feedback, parallel interconnections. The stability requirement for such a system is that all zeros of a non-polynomial characteristic equation must be within the unit circle on the complex z-plane. The obtained theoretical results lead to a numerical test for stability evaluation of interconnected FO systems. It is based on modern root-finding techniques on the complex plane employing triangulation of the unit circle and Cauchy’s argument principle. The developed numerical test is simple, intuitive and can be applied to a variety of systems. Furthermore, because it evaluates the function related to the characteristic equation on the complex plane, it does not require computation of state-matrix eigenvalues. The obtained numerical results confirm the efficiency of the developed test for the stability analysis of interconnected discrete-time FO LTI state-space systems.

The dark channel prior has been successfully applied to solve the blind deblurring problem on different scene images. Since the dark channel of the blurry-noise image is similar to that of the corresponding clear image, the sparsity of the dark channel is less effective for image blind deblurring. Inspired by the fact that a fractional order calculation can inhibit the noise and preserve the texture information of the image, a fractional order dark channel prior is proposed for image deblurring in this paper. It is appropriate for kernel estimation where input images and intermediate images are processed by using a fractional order dark channel prior. Furthermore, the non-convex problem is solved by the half-quadratic splitting method, and some metrics are used for deblurring image quality assessment. Finally, quantitative and qualitative experimental results show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results on synthetic and real blurry images.

Opis:
Design patterns help us to respond to the challenges faced while developing Distributed Object Computing (DOC) applications by shifting developers' focus to high-level design concerns, rather than platform specific details. However, due to the inherent ambiguity of the existing textual and graphical descriptions of the design patterns, users are faced with difficulties in understanding when and how to use them. Since design patterns are seldom used in isolation but are usually combined to solve complex problems, the above-mentioned difficulties have even worsened. The formal specification of design patterns and their combination is not meant to replace the existing means of describing patterns, but to complement them in order to achieve accuracy and to allow rigorous reasoning about them. The main problem of the existing formal specification languages for design patterns is the lack of completeness. This is mainly because they tend to focus on specifying either the structural or behavioral aspects of design patterns but not both of them. Moreover, none of them even ventured in specifying DOC patterns and pattern combinations. We propose a simple yet Balanced Pattern Specification Language (BPSL) aimed to achieve equilibrium by specifying both the aspects of design patterns. The language combines two subsets of logic: one from the First-Order Logic (FOL) and the other from the Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA).
