Opis:
This paper reports a system based on the recently proposed evolutionary paradigm of gene expression programming (GEP). This enhanced system, called EGIPSYS, has features specially suited to deal with symbolic regression problems. Amongst the new features implemented in EGIPSYS are: new selection methods, chromosomes of variable length, a new approach to manipulating constants, new genetic operators and an adaptable fitness function. All the proposed improvements were tested separately, and proved to be advantageous over the basic GEP. EGIPSYS was also applied to four difficult identification problems and its performance was compared with a traditional implementation of genetic programming (LilGP). Overall, EGIPSYS was able to obtain consistently better results than the system using genetic programming, finding less complex solutions with less computational effort. The success obtained suggests the adaptation and extension of the system to other classes of problems.

Opis:
It has been experimentally verified that most commonly used subspace methods for identification of linear state-space systems with exogenous inputs may, in certain experimental conditions, run into ill-conditioning and lead to ambiguous results. An analysis of the critical situations has lead us to propose a new algorithmic structure which could be used either to test difficult cases and/or to implement a suitable combination of new and old algorithms presented in the literature to help fixing the problem.

Perspective problems arise in machine vision when using a camera to observe the scene. Essential problems include the identification of unknown states and/or unknown parameters from perspective observations. Range identification is used to estimate the states/positions of a moving object with known motion parameters. Range estimation has been discussed in the literature using nonlinear observers with full homogeneous observations derived from the image plane. In this paper, the same range identification problem is discussed with a single homogeneous observation using nonlinear observers. Our simulation results verify the convergence of the observers when their observability conditions are satisfied.

Opis:
The paper presents two methods used for the identification of Continuous-time Linear Time Invariant (CLTI) systems. In both methods the idea of using modulating functions and a convolution filter is exploited. It enables the proper transformation of a differential equation to an algebraic equation with the same parameters. Possible different normalizations of the model are strictly connected with different parameter constraints which have to be assumed for the nontrivial solution of the optimal identification problem. Different parameter constraints result in different quality of identification. A thorough discussion on the role of parameter constraints in the optimality of system identification is included. For time continuous systems, the Equation Error Method (EEM) is compared with the continuous version of the Output Error Method (OEM), which appears as a special sub-case of the EEM.

Opis:
Interval arithmetic techniques such as VALENCIA-IVP allow calculating guaranteed enclosures of all reachable states of continuous-time dynamical systems with bounded uncertainties of both initial conditions and system parameters. Considering the fact that, in naive implementations of interval algorithms, overestimation might lead to unnecessarily conservative results, suitable consistency tests are essential to obtain the tightest possible enclosures. In this contribution, a general framework for the use of constraints based on physically motivated conservation properties is presented. The use of these constraints in verified simulations of dynamical systems provides a computationally efficient procedure which restricts the state enclosures to regions that are physically eaningful. A branch and prune algorithm is modified to a consistency test, which is based on these constraints. Two application scenarios are studied in detail. First, the total energy is employed as a conservation property for the analysis of mechanical systems. It is shown that conservation properties, such as the energy, are applicable to any Hamiltonian system. The second scenario is based on constraints that are derived from decoupling properties, which are considered for a high-dimensional compartment model of granulopoiesis in human blood cell dynamics.
