The European leader for satellite systems and at the forefront of orbital infrastructures, Thales Alenia Space, is a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Finmeccanica (33%) and forms with Telespazio a Space Alliance. Thales Alenia Space is a worldwide reference in telecoms, radar and optical Earth observation, defence and security, navigation and science. It has 11 industrial sites in 4 European countries (France, Italy, Spain and Belgium) with over 7200 employees worldwide. Satellite evolution and the wish to design more autonomous missions imply the enhancement of the satellite architecture and special attention paid to fault management (i.e., Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery, or FDIR, in space). Nevertheless, the constraints on FDIR techniques and strategies remain the same as for standard missions: robustness, reactive detection, quick isolation/identification and validation. This paper gives an introduction to Fault Tolerance (FT) in the space domain and some principles for the coming FT architectures. The current context of FDIR is presented by describing the approach implemented on telecommunication satellites and, more precisely, on one of the most FDIR sensible subsystems: the AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control System). Following the current state of FDIR in the space domain, some perspectives are given such as a centralized distributed FDIR strategy for the next generation of autonomous satellites as well as some research tracks and hybrid diagnosis.

This paper proposes an H/H fault detection observer method by using generalized output for a class of polytopic linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. As the main contribution, with the aid of the relative degree of output, a new output vector is generated by gathering the original output and its time derivative, and it is feasible to consider H actuator fault sensitivity in the entire frequency for the new system. In order to improve actuator and sensor fault sensitivity as well as guarantee robustness against disturbances, simultaneously, an H/H fault detection observer is designed for the new LPV polytopic system. Besides, the design conditions of the proposed observer are transformed into an optimization problem by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Integrated design of observer based Fault Detection (FD) for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with Lipschitz nonlinearities is studied. In the context of norm based residual evaluation, the residual generator and evaluator are designed together in an integrated form, and, based on it, a trade-off FD system is finally achieved in the sense that, for a given Fault Detection Rate (FDR), the False Alarm Rate (FAR) is minimized. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Opis:
Analytical fault detection algorithms have the potential to reduce the size, power and weight of safety-critical aerospace systems. Analytical redundancy has been successfully applied in many non-safety critical applications. However, acceptance for aerospace applications will require new methods to rigorously certify the impact of such algorithms on the overall system reliability. This paper presents a theoretical method to assess the probabilistic performance for an analytically redundant system. Specifically, a fault tolerant actuation system is considered. The system consists of dual-redundant actuators and an analytical fault detection algorithm to switch between the hardware components. The exact system failure rate per hour is computed using the law of total probability. This analysis requires knowledge of the failure rates for the hardware components. In addition, knowledge of specific probabilistic performance metrics for the fault detection logic is needed. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed analysis method.

Opis:
Estimating the state of a hybrid system means accounting for the mode of operation or failure and the current state of the continuously valued entities concurrently. Existing hybrid estimation schemes try to overcome the problem of an exponentially growing number of possible mode-sequence/continuous-state combinations by merging hypotheses and/or deducing likelihood measures to identify tractable sets of the most likely hypotheses. However, they still suffer from unnecessarily high computational costs as the number of possible modes increases. Hybrid diagnosis schemes, on the other hand, estimate the current mode of operation/failure only, thus leaving the continuous evolution of the system implicit. This paper proposes a novel scheme that uses a combination of both the approaches in order to define posterior transition probabilities between the specified modes of the hybrid system, hence focusing better on relevant hypotheses. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the algorithm is applied to a satellite attitude control system and compared with existing hybrid estimation/diagnosis schemes, such as the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) algorithm, a purely parity based method (HyDiag), and an existing hybrid Mode Estimation (hME) algorithm.

In this paper the classical detection filter design problem is considered as an input reconstruction problem. Input reconstruction is viewed as a dynamic inversion problem. This approach is based on the existence of the left inverse and arrives at detector architectures whose outputs are the fault signals while the inputs are the measured system inputs and outputs and possibly their time derivatives. The paper gives a brief summary of the properties and existence of the inverse for linear and nonlinear multivariable systems. A view of the inversion-based input reconstruction with special emphasis on the aspects of fault detection and isolation by using invariant subspaces and the results of classical geometrical systems theory is provided. The applicability of the idea to fault reconstruction is demonstrated through examples.

This paper presents an adaptive Generalized Likelihood Ratio (GLR) test for multiple Faults Detection and Isolation (FDI) in stochastic linear dynamic systems. Based on the work of Willsky and Jones (1976), we propose a modified generalized likelihood ratio test, allowing detection, isolation and estimation of multiple sequential faults. Our contribution aims to maximise the good decision rate of fault detection using another updating strategy. This is based on a reference model updated on-line after each detection and isolation of one fault. To reduce the computational requirement, the passive GLR test will be derived from a state estimator designed on a fixed reference model directly sensitive to system changes. We will show that active and passive GLR tests will be mixed and give interesting results compared with the GLR of Willsky and Jones (1976), and that they can be easily integrated in a reconfigurable Fault-Tolerant Control System (FTCS) to asymptotically recover the nominal system performances of the jump-free system.

Fault detection and isolation in Wiener and Hammerstein systems via generation and processing of residual sequences is considered. We assume that some models of the unfaulty Wiener and Hammerstein systems under consideration are known. For Wiener systems, we also assume that their static nonlinear subsystems are invertible. Then, based on a serial-parallel definition of the residual error, new fault detection and isolation methods are proposed. To detect and identify all the changes in both the Wiener and Hammerstein system parameters, the sequences of residuals are processed by using linear regression methods or a neural network approach.

Network models aim to explain patterns of empirical relationships based on mechanisms that operate under various principles for establishing and removing links. The principle of preferential attachment forms a basis for the well-known Barabási–Albert model, which describes a stochastic preferential attachment process where newly added nodes tend to connect to the more highly connected ones. Previous work has shown that a wide class of such models are able to recreate power law degree distributions. This paper characterizes the cumulative degree distribution of the Barabási–Albert model as an invariant set and shows that this set is not only a global attractor, but it is also stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Stability in this context means that, for all initial configurations, the cumulative degree distributions of subsequent networks remain, for all time, close to the limit distribution. We use the stability properties of the distribution to design a semi-supervised technique for the problem of anomalous event detection on networks.

Opis:
The diagnosis of systems is one of the major steps in their control and its purpose is to determine the possible presence of dysfunctions, which affect the sensors and actuators associated with a system but also the internal components of the system itself. On the one hand, the diagnosis must therefore focus on the detection of a dysfunction and, on the other hand, on the physical localization of the dysfunction by specifying the component in a faulty situation, and then on its temporal localization. In this contribution, the emphasis is on the use of software redundancy applied to the detection of anomalies within the measurements collected in the system. The systems considered here are characterized by non-linear behaviours whose model is not known a priori. The proposed strategy therefore focuses on processing the data acquired on the system for which it is assumed that a healthy operating regime is known. Diagnostic procedures usually use this data corresponding to good operating regimes by comparing them with new situations that may contain faults. Our approach is fundamentally different in that the good functioning data allow us, by means of a non-linear prediction technique, to generate a lot of data that reflect all the faults under different excitation situations of the system. The database thus created characterizes the dysfunctions and then serves as a reference to be compared with real situations. This comparison, which then makes it possible to recognize the faulty situation, is based on a technique for evaluating the main angle between subspaces of system dysfunction situations. An important point of the discussion concerns the robustness and sensitivity of fault indicators. In particular, it is shown how, by non-linear combinations, it is possible to increase the size of these indicators in such a way as to facilitate the location of faults.

This paper describes an application of sensitivity theory to the analysis of a certain class of fuzzy systems which can be used for fault detection and isolation (FDI). The work is divided into three main tasks. The first is the mathematical representation of some class of fuzzy systems. This is followed by an application of sensitivity theory to fuzzy systems based on the approach detailed in the first part. Finally, this method is applied to a fuzzy fault diagnosis scheme for the two-tank system, and the results compared with those achieved by the application of sensitivity theory to a non-fuzzy diagnosis scheme for the same system. Simulation results for the fuzzy and non-fuzzy fault diagnosis schemes are presented, which verify the results obtained via the application of sensitivity theory.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a strategy to find a minimal set of test nodes for diagnostics of complex analog systems with single parametric faults using the support vector machine (SVM) classifier as a fault locator. The results of diagnostics of a video amplifier and a low-pass filter using tabu search along with genetic algorithms (GAs) as node selectors in conjunction with the SVM fault classifier are presented. General principles of the diagnostic procedure are first introduced, and then the proposed approach is discussed in detail.
