Opis:
The appropriate choice of the forms of Lyapunov functions for a positive 2D Roesser model is addressed. It is shown that for the positive 2D Roesser model: (i) a linear form of the state vector can be chosen as a Lyapunov function, (ii) there exists a strictly positive diagonal matrix P such that the matrix ATPA-P is negative definite. The theoretical deliberations will be illustrated by numerical examples.

Opis:
The paper proposes a design procedure for the creation of a robust and effective hybrid algorithm, tailored to and capable of carrying out a given design optimisation task. In the course of algorithm creation, a small set of simple optimisation methods is chosen, out of which those performing best will constitute the hybrid algorithm. The simplicity of the method allows implementing ad-hoc modifications if unexpected adverse features of the optimisation problem are found. It is postulated to model a system that is smaller but conceptually equivalent, whose model is much simpler than the original one and can be used freely during algorithm construction. Successful operation of the proposed approach is presented in two case studies (power plant set-point optimisation and waveguide bend shape optimisation). The proposed methodology is intended to be used by those not having much knowledge of the system or modelling technology, but having the basic practice in optimisation. It is designed as a compromise between brute force optimisation and design optimisation preceded by a refined study of the underlying problem. Special attention is paid to cases where simulation failures (regardless of their nature) form big obstacles in the course of the optimisation process.

Opis:
This paper proposes novel forecasting models for fractional-order chaotic oscillators, such as Duffing’s, Van der Pol’s, Tamaševičius’s and Chua’s, using feedforward neural networks. The models predict a change in the state values which bears a weighted relationship with the oscillator states. Such an arrangement is a suitable candidate model for out-of-sample forecasting of system states. The proposed neural network-assisted weighted model is applied to the above oscillators. The improved out-of-sample forecasting results of the proposed modeling strategy compared with the literature are comprehensively analyzed. The proposed models corresponding to the optimal weights result in the least mean square error (MSE) for all the system states. Further, the MSE for the proposed model is less in most of the oscillators compared with the one reported in the literature. The proposed prediction model’s out-of-sample forecasting plots show the best tracking ability to approximate future state values.

Opis:
The Slit Island Method (SIM) is a technique for the estimation of the fractal dimension of an object by determining the area– perimeter relations for successive slits. The SIM could be applied for image analysis of irregular grayscale objects and their classification using the fractal dimension. It is known that this technique is not functional in some cases. It is emphasized in this paper that for specific objects a negative or an infinite fractal dimension could be obtained. The transformation of the input image data from unipolar to bipolar gives a possibility of reformulated image analysis using the Ising model context. The polynomial approximation of the obtained area-perimeter curve allows object classification. The proposed technique is applied to the images of cervical cell nuclei (Papanicolaou smears) for the preclassification of the correct and atypical cells.

Opis:
Control strategies for nonlinear dynamical systems often make use of special system properties, which are, for example, differential flatness or exact input-output as well as input-to-state linearizability. However, approaches using these properties are unavoidably limited to specific classes of mathematical models. To generalize design procedures and to account for parameter uncertainties as well as modeling errors, an interval arithmetic approach for verified simulation of continuoustime dynamical system models is extended. These extensions are the synthesis, sensitivity analysis, and optimization of open-loop and closed-loop controllers. In addition to the calculation of guaranteed enclosures of the sets of all reachable states, interval arithmetic routines have been developed which verify the controllability and observability of the states of uncertain dynamic systems. Furthermore, they assure asymptotic stability of controlled systems for all possible operating conditions. Based on these results, techniques for trajectory planning can be developed which determine reference signals for linear and nonlinear controllers. For that purpose, limitations of the control variables are taken into account as further constraints. Due to the use of interval techniques, issues of the functionality, robustness, and safety of dynamic systems can be treated in a unified design approach. The presented algorithms are demonstrated for a nonlinear uncertain model of biological wastewater treatment plants.

Opis:
The water loss detection and location problem has received great attention in recent years. In particular, data-driven methods have shown very promising results mainly because they can deal with uncertain data and the variability of models better than model-based methods. The main contribution of this work is an unsupervised approach to leak detection and location in water distribution networks. This approach is based on a zone division of the network, and it only requires data from a normal operation scenario of the pipe network. The proposition combines a periodic transformation and a data vector extension together with principal component analysis of leak detection. A reconstruction-based contribution index is used for determining the leak zone location. The Hanoi distribution network is employed as the case study for illustrating the feasibility of the proposal. Single leaks are emulated with varying outflow magnitudes at all nodes that represent less than 2.5% of the total demand of the network and between 3% and 25% of the node’s demand. All leaks can be detected within the time interval of a day, and the average classification rate obtained is 85.28% by using only data from three pressure sensors.

Opis:
The evaluation of system performance plays an increasingly important role in the reliability analysis of cyber-physical systems. Factors of external instability affect the evaluation results in complex systems. Taking the running gear in high-speed trains as an example, its complex operating environment is the most critical factor affecting the performance evaluation design. In order to optimize the evaluation while improving accuracy, this paper develops a performance evaluation method based on slow feature analysis and a hidden Markov model (SFA-HMM). The utilization of SFA can screen out the slowest features as HMM inputs, based on which a new HMM is established for performance evaluation of running gear systems. In addition to directly classical performance evaluation for running gear systems of high-speed trains, the slow feature statistic is proposed to detect the difference in the system state through test data, and then eliminate the error evaluation of the HMM in the stable state. In addition, indicator planning and status classification of the data are performed through historical information and expert knowledge. Finally, a case study of the running gear system in high-speed trains is discussed. After comparison, the result shows that the proposed method can enhance evaluation performance.

This paper proposes a nonlinear regression structure comprising a wavelet network and a linear term. The introduction of the linear term is aimed at providing a more parsimonious interpolation in high-dimensional spaces when the modelling samples are sparse. A constructive procedure for building such structures, termed linear-wavelet networks, is described. For illustration, the proposed procedure is employed in the framework of dynamic system identification. In an example involving a simulated fermentation process, it is shown that a linear-wavelet network yields a smaller approximation error when compared with a wavelet network with the same number of regressors. The proposed technique is also applied to the identification of a pressure plant from experimental data. In this case, the results show that the introduction of wavelets considerably improves the prediction ability of a linear model. Standard errors on the estimated model coefficients are also calculated to assess the numerical conditioning of the identification process.

Opis:
The paper discusses a non-deterministic model for data association tasks in visual surveillance of crowds. Using detection and tracking of crowd components (i.e., individuals and groups) as baseline tools, we propose a simple algebraic framework for maintaining data association (continuity of labels assigned to crowd components) between subsequent video-frames in spite of possible disruptions and inaccuracies in tracking/detection algorithms. Formally, two alternative schemes (which, in practice, can be jointly used) are introduced, depending on whether individuals or groups can be prospectively better tracked in the current scenario. In the first scheme, only individuals are tracked, and the continuity of group labels is inferred without explicitly tracking the groups. In the second scheme, only group tracking is performed, and associations between individuals are inferred from group tracking. The associations are built upon non-deterministic estimates of memberships (individuals in groups) and estimates obtained directly from the baseline detection and tracking algorithms. The framework can incorporate any detectors and trackers (both classical or DL-based) as long as they can provide some geometric outlines (e.g., bounding boxes) of the crowd components. The formal analysis is supported by experiments in sample scenarios, where the framework provides meaningful performance improvements in various crowd analysis tasks.

Opis:
In the field of intelligent crowd video analysis, the prediction of abnormal events in dense crowds is a well-known and challenging problem. By analysing crowd particle collisions and characteristics of individuals in a crowd to follow the general trend of motion, a purpose-driven lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) is proposed. The collision effect in the proposed method is measured according to the variation in crowd particle numbers in the image nodes; characteristics of the crowd following a general trend are incorporated by adjusting the particle directions. The model predicts dense crowd abnormal events in different intervals through iterations of simultaneous streaming and collision steps. Few initial frames of a video are needed to initialize the proposed model and no training procedure is required. Experimental results show that our purpose-driven LBM performs better than most state-of-the-art methods.

Opis:
The paper deals with the modeling and fault-tolerant control of a real battery assembly system which is under implementation at the RAFI GmbH company (one of the leading electronic manufacturing service providers in Germany). To model and control the battery assembly system, a unified max-plus algebra and model predictive control framework is introduced. Subsequently, the control strategy is enhanced with fault-tolerance features that increase the overall performance of the production system being considered. In particular, it enables tolerating (up to some degree) mobile robot, processing and transportation faults. The paper discusses also robustness issues, which are inevitable in real production systems. As a result, a novel robust predictive fault-tolerant strategy is developed that is applied to the battery assembly system. The last part of the paper shows illustrative examples, which clearly exhibit the performance of the proposed approach.
