Opis:
Given an undirected connected graph G = (V, E), a subset of vertices S is a maximum 2-packing set if the number of edges in the shortest path between any pair of vertices in S is at least 3 and S has the maximum cardinality. In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm for the maximum 2-packing set problem on arbitrary graphs, which is an NP-hard problem. To the best of our knowledge, this work is a pioneering effort to tackle this problem for arbitrary graphs. For comparison, we extended and outperformed a well-known genetic algorithm originally designed for the maximum independent set problem. We also compared our genetic algorithm with a polynomial-time one for the maximum 2-packing set problem on cactus graphs. Empirical results show that our genetic algorithm is capable of finding 2-packing sets with a cardinality relatively close (or equal) to that of the maximum 2-packing sets. Moreover, the cardinality of the 2-packing sets found by our genetic algorithm increases linearly with the number of vertices and with a larger population and a larger number of generations. Furthermore, we provide a theoretical proof demonstrating that our genetic algorithm increases the fitness for each candidate solution when certain conditions are met.

Opis:
Regularity in musical structure is experienced as a strongly structured texture with repeated and periodic patterns, with the musical ideas presented in an appreciable shape to the human mind. We recently showed that manipulation of musical content (i.e., deviation of musical structure) affects the perception of music. These deviations were detected by musical experts, and the musical pieces containing them were labelled as irregular. In this study, we replace the human expert involved in detection of (ir)regularity with artificial intelligence algorithms. We evaluated eight variables measuring entropy and information content, which can be analysed for each musical piece using the computational model called Information Dynamics of Music and different viewpoints. The algorithm was tested using 160 musical excerpts. A preliminary statistical analysis indicated that three of the eight variables were significant predictors of regularity (E_cpitch, IC_cpintfref, and E_cpintfref). Additionally, we observed linear separation between regular and irregular excerpts; therefore, we employed support vector machine and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms with a linear kernel and a linear activation function, respectively, to predict regularity. The final algorithms were capable of predicting regularity with an accuracy ranging from 89% for the ANN algorithm using only the most significant predictor to 100% for the ANN algorithm using all eight prediction variables.

A haplotype analysis is becoming increasingly important in studying complex genetic diseases. Various algorithms and specialized computer software have been developed to statistically estimate haplotype frequencies from marker phenotypes in unrelated individuals. However, currently there are very few empirical reports on the performance of the methods for the recovery of haplotype frequencies. One of the most widely used methods of haplotype reconstruction is the Maximum Likelihood method, employing the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. The aim of this study is to explore the variability of the EM estimates of the haplotype frequency for real data. We analyzed haplotypes at the BLM, WRN, RECQL and ATM genes with 8-14 biallelic markers per gene in 300 individuals. We also re-analyzed the data presented by Mano et al. (2002). We studied the convergence speed, the shape of the loglikelihood hypersurface, and the existence of local maxima, as well as their relations with heterozygosity, the linkage disequilibrium and departures from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Our study contributes to determining practical values for algorithm sensitivities.

Opis:
Parallel multi-deme genetic algorithms are especially advantageous because they allow reducing the time of computations and can perform a much broader search than single-population ones. However, their formal analysis does not seem to have been studied exhaustively enough. In this paper we propose a mathematical framework describing a wide class of island-like strategies as a stationary Markov chain. Our approach uses extensively the modeling principles introduced by Vose, Rudolph and their collaborators. An original and crucial feature of the framework we propose is the mechanism of inter-deme agent operation synchronization. It is important from both a practical and a theoretical point of view. We show that under a mild assumption the resulting Markov chain is ergodic and the sequence of the related sampling measures converges to some invariant measure. The asymptotic guarantee of success is also obtained as a simple issue of ergodicity. Moreover, if the cardinality of each island population grows to infinity, then the sequence of the limit invariant measures contains a weakly convergent subsequence. The formal description of the island model obtained for the case of solving a single-objective problem can also be extended to the multi-objective case.

The performing of a quaternion-based rotation using a rotation matrix takes 15 ordinary multiplications, 6 trivial multiplications by 2 (left-shifts), 21 additions, and 4 squarings of real numbers, while the proposed algorithm can compute the same result in only 14 real multiplications (or multipliers—in a hardware implementation case), 43 additions, 4 right-shifts (multiplications by 1/4), and 3 left-shifts (multiplications by 2).

This work introduces ANB (Ant Algorithm for Non-Bifurcated Flows), a novel approach to capacitated static optimization of flows in connection-oriented computer networks. The problem considered arises naturally from several optimization problems that have recently received significant attention. The proposed ANB is an ant algorithm motivated by recent works on the application of the ant algorithm to solving various problems related to computer networks. However, few works concern the use of ant algorithms in the assignment of static flows in connection-oriented networks. We analyze the major characteristics of the ANB and try to explain its performance. We report results of many experiments over various networks.

Opis:
This paper explains how to use Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) to deal with a flexible job shop scheduling problem, especially minimizing the makespan. The Job-shop Scheduling Problem (JSP) is one of the most difficult problems, as it is classified as an NP-complete one (Carlier and Chretienne, 1988; Garey and Johnson, 1979). In many cases, the combination of goals and resources exponentially increases the search space, and thus the generation of consistently good scheduling is particularly difficult because we have a very large combinatorial search space and precedence constraints between operations. Exact methods such as the branch and bound method and dynamic programming take considerable computing time if an optimum solution exists. In order to overcome this difficulty, it is more sensible to obtain a good solution near the optimal one. Stochastic search techniques such as evolutionary algorithms can be used to find a good solution. They have been successfully used in combinatorial optimization, e.g. in wire routing, transportation problems, scheduling problems, etc. (Banzhaf et al., 1998; Dasgupta and Michalewicz, 1997). Our objective is to establish a practical relationship between the development in the EA area and the reality of a production JSP by developing, on the one hand, two effective genetic encodings, such as parallel job and parallel machine representations of the chromosome, and on the other, genetic operators associated with these representations. In this article we deal with the problem of flexible job-shop scheduling which presents two difficulties: the first is the assignment of each operation to a machine, and the other is the scheduling of this set of operations in order to minimize our criterion (e.g. the makespan).

In this paper we address an extension of a very efficient genetic algorithm (GA) known as Hy3, a physical parallelization of the gradual distributed real-coded GA (GD-RCGA). This search model relies on a set of eight subpopulations residing in a cube topology having two faces for promoting exploration and exploitation. The resulting technique has been shown to yield very accurate results in continuous optimization by using crossover operators tuned to explore and exploit the solutions inside each subpopulation. We introduce here a further extension of Hy3, called Hy4, that uses 16 islands arranged in a hypercube of four dimensions. Thus, two new faces with different exploration/exploitation search capabilities are added to the search performed by Hy3. We analyze the importance of running a synchronous versus an asynchronous version of the models considered. The results indicate that the proposed Hy4 model overcomes the Hy3 performance because of its improved balance between exploration and exploitation that enhances the search. Finally, we also show that the async Hy4 model scales better than the sync one.

Challenging design problems arise regularly in modern fault diagnosis systems. Unfortunately, the classical analytical techniques often cannot provide acceptable solutions to such difficult tasks. This explains why soft computing techniques such as evolutionary algorithms and neural networks become more and more popular in industrial applications of fault diagnosis. The main objective of this paper is to present recent developments regarding the application of evolutionary algorithms and neural networks to fault diagnosis. In particular, a brief introduction to these computational intelligence paradigms is presented, and then a review of their fault detection and isolation applications is performed. Close attention is paid to techniques that integrate the classical and soft computing methods. A selected group of them is carefully described in the paper. The performance of the presented approaches is illustrated with the use of the DAMADICS fault detection benchmark that deals with a valve actuator.

Multidimensional Symmetric alpha-Stable (S alpha S) mutations are applied to phenotypic evolutionary algorithms. Such mutations are characterized by non-spherical symmetry for alpha<2 and the fact that the most probable distance of mutated points is not in a close neighborhood of the origin, but at a certain distance from it. It is the so-called surrounding effect (Obuchowicz, 2001b; 2003b). For alpha=2, the S alpha S mutation reduces to the Gaussian one, and in the case of alpha=1, the Cauchy mutation is obtained. The exploration and exploitation abilities of evolutionary algorithms, using S alpha S mutations for different alpha, are analyzed by a set of simulation experiments. The obtained results prove the important influence of the surrounding effect of symmetric alpha-stable mutations on both the abilities considered.
