Opis:
This study aims to use γ-ray computed tomography images to define the representative elementary area of the soil porosity distribution. Different textured soils from Southeast Brazil and different schemes of areas were analyzed. The image acquisition was performed in 2006 using a first generation γ-ray computed tomography system equipped with 241Am radioactive source. Consecutive increasing areas located at the center (scheme 1), the inferior (scheme 2) and superior (scheme 3) borders of the sample computed tomography image, with size areas ranging from 1.2 to 678.8 mm², were selected. The full width at a half maximum parameter was used to describe the samples soil porosity distribution and mathematical analysis concepts were adopted to define the representative elementary area. The representative elementary areas found for the sandy soil (Geric Ferralsol) and clayey soils (Rhodic Ferralsol and Eutric Nitosol) were respectively: 514.3, 514.3 and 555.4 mm² (scheme 1); 279.5, 393.3 and 457.4 mm² (scheme 2); and 457.4, 457.4 and 457.4 mm² (scheme 3). The results confirmed that the representative elementary area were influenced by the soil texture and management. Different schemes were noticed to provide different representative elementary areas for the same soil, which suggests that this procedure was efficient to detect the heterogeneity inside the soil samples.

Opis:
The movement of soil particles by the wind can be measured using wind tunnels and collectors, or dust traps. We tested both in Southeast Spain in order to compare movement in four types of soil. Our tests were carried out in a well-tilled orchard on an Anthrosol, an unploughed Leptosol and Arenosol, and finally on an olive-cropped Cambisol. We estimated soil loss using a wind tunnel with a built-in laser-scanner, and then compared the results with records from nine vaned masts, each with four big spring number eight collectors at different heights, and the same for another nine masts but with a new type of dust trap known as the multidirectional. The collectors can differentiate between overall loss and particle deposition, which is not detectable on a larger scale in the tunnel. The results from the big spring number eight traps and our wind tunnel showed a high degree of correlation (R² = 0.933) and an even closer correlation with the multidirectional trap (R² = 0.978). Moreover, the new multidirectional trap collectors are very efficient and easy to manufacture from thermoplastic filaments with an industrial 3D printer.

Opis:
A quantitative description of soil hysteretic response during drying-wetting cycles is required to improve prediction of the soil water retention model. The objective of the study is to quantify the degree of hysteresis, which is helpful to evaluate the precision of soil water flow calculation. A new procedure to quantify the degree of hysteresis is presented. The Arya-Paris model allows assessment of hysteresis effects from initial drying curves, dynamic contact angles, degree of hysteresis value, and maximum difference value between drying and subsequent wetting curves. The experimental results show that the degree of hysteresis varies with the particle size, bulk density, void ratio, initial water content, and contact angle of the soil. The new findings can be very useful in modelling soil water flows.

Opis:
.Measurements of single-kernel mass and volume made on healthy (control) and scab-damaged samples of grain of three winter wheat varieties never resulted in lower values of mean single-kernel density for scab-damaged grain. This finding, contrary to common opinion, can be explained as being a result of the comparable magnitude of relative decrease (due to infestation) of two features (mass and volume) that define single-kernel density. The discrepancy between results presented in this paper (kernel volume was determined with an air pycnometer) and the results in some other reports (liquid pycnometers used) can result from the different methods applied for kernel volume measurements: when a liquid medium is used the surface tension effect tends to overestimate the volume, especially for scabby kernels that are known to be shrivelled ie possessing voids and pores at the surface that the liquid cannot penetrate. As a consequence kernel density of scabby kernels can be significantly underestimated.

Opis:
Continuous no-till management of sloping cultivated areas can promote soil property transformations, causing changes in aggregation and dispersion. The objective of this work was (i) to quantify the readily and mechanically dispersible clays using different methods and (ii) to examine their relationships with soil properties along a catena under no-till management. For this study, the catena was divided into three distinct parts: crest, upper-slope and mid-slope positions. Undisturbed soil cores were sampled at each slope position to determine the following soil properties: organic carbon, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Al3+, P, pH, cation exchange capacity and total clay content. Additionally, the levels of readily dispersible clay were measured using turbidimeter and hydrometer methods, whereas mechanically dispersible clay was quantified using the turbidimeter method. We observed high influence of total clay content and organic carbon on soil flocculation; P, Mg2+ and cation exchange capacity were positively related to clay dispersion. Soil management and water transport downslope are probably influencing changes in soil properties and determining the distribution of dispersible clay contents along the catena. No relationships were observed between readily dispersible clay measured using turbidimeter and hydrometer in terms of quantity. Hydrometer and turbidimeter measurements can deliver significantly different results regarding dispersible clay quantification, potentially leading to misinterpretations concerning the amount of clay dispersed in water.
