Opis:
The present study was executed in order to examine the influences of land use change on aggregate stability and soil organic carbon fractions in the humid region of the north of Iran. The study area featured three land uses which included natural Hyrcanian forest, tea plantation and paddy rice cultivation. One hundred soil samples were taken from the 0-10 cm layer in a grid pattern to allow for variations in the study area as much as possible in summer 2016. The results revealed that land use change significantly altered the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, as the highest values of soil organic carbon and complexed organic carbon, and the lowest values of pH, calcium carbonate equivalent and bulk density, were observed in the natural forest. The greatest percentage of macro-aggregates was found in the natural forest followed by the tea plantation. Particulate organic carbon and soil organic carbon associated with clay and silt particles as well as soil organic carbon associated with all aggregate fractions showed the following trend: natural forest > tea plantation > rice cultivation. Overall, our results confirmed the importance of forest soils in C sequestration and the vital role played by soil organic carbon in soils to improve soil quality indicators and aggregation.

The pea seeds were exposed to full-wave rectified sinusoidal magnetic fields. The effects of electromagnetic treatment on seedling growth and chlorophyll contents and have been investigated. Seed were sown after magnetic field treatment according to ISTA under controlled laboratory conditions. The magnetic filed treatment of seeds increased the growth significantly (P<0.05), while the increment in contents of chlorophyll have been found non significant (P<0.05). The shoot length, root length, root dry mass, shoot dry mass, fresh root mass and fresh shoot mass increased up to 140.5, 218.2, and 104, 263.6, 74.5, 91.3%, respectively. The result suggested that magnetic field could be used to enhance the growth in pea plant.

Opis:
The paper presents a study on the effect of soil matric suction on the variation of leaf chlorophyll index and nitrogen concentration of canola. Results showed that chlorophyll index increases exponentially with soil matric suction, especially at the late season of canola growing time. At moderate matric suction (200 and 300 kPa soil suction heads), chlorophyll index remains nearly constant, but in drier soil (matric suction >300 kPa),chlorophyll index increases gradually with time. Despite the va-riation of the total leaf nitrogen with the soil matric suction, it is similar to the variation of the chlorophyll index, but the results showed that the chlorophyll index – nitrogen concentration curve has a de-marcated bi-modal shape. We suggest that 2.7% of nitrogen and 69.8 of the chlorophyll index value represent the upper limit of the chlorophyll meter reliability for estimation of canola nitrogen under a wide range of soil moisture levels. These results confirm that the chlorophyll meter can be used as an effective tool for rapid and non-destructive estimation of the relative chlorophyll and nitrogen content in canola leaves at a wide range of soil moisture content, except for nearly wilting coefficient or extremely high drought stress.

Opis:
The present study was carried out to investigate the compression loading behaviour of five Indian sunflower varieties (NIRMAL-196, NIRMAL-303, CO-2, KBSH-41, and PSH-996) under four different moisture levels (6-18% d.b). The initial cracking force, mean rupture force, and rupture energy were measured as a function of moisture content. The observed results showed that the initial cracking force decreased linearly with an increase in moisture content for all varieties. The mean rupture force also decreased linearly with an increase in moisture content. However, the rupture energy was found to be increasing linearly for seed and kernel with moisture content. NIRMAL-196 and PSH-996 had maximum and minimum values of all the attributes studied for both seed and kernel, respectively. The values of all the studied attributes were higher for seed than kernel of all the varieties at all moisture levels. There was a significant effect of moisture and variety on compression loading behaviour.

Opis:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of alternate furrow irrigation accompanied by biochar application within different cropping patterns on soil respiration and root traits such as root dry weight and root volume associated with the dry matter yield of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) over a twoyear period (2017 – 2018). The treatments consisted of three irrigation methods, which included every furrow irrigation, fixed furrow irrigation and alternate furrow irrigation and two cropping patterns including one-row, two-rows and three levels of biochar application including 0, 6 and 12 t ha-1. Different irrigation levels had a significant effect on root morphological indices, soil respiration, and the dry matter of forage yield. Biochar application showed a significant influence on soil respiration, as the highest soil respiration was observed in the B2 and B1 treatments (0.173 and 0.171 μmol C g-1 soil h-1, respectively), in contrast, the least was observed in the control treatment B0 (0.168 μmol C g-1 soil h-1). Biochar application had a positive effect on root dry weight, root volume and dry matter yield due to the prevention of severe moisture loss and further yield loss.

Opis:
The introduction of new genotypes of crop plants is among the most strategic research programmes, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. To study the effect of drought stress on seed yield and some physiological traits of promising lines of rapeseed at different sowing dates, an experiment was conducted for two years (2015-2017) in a semi-arid region of Iran. In this research, two conventional sowing dates were set in October 12 and November 1 (late sowing). Irrigation was carried out at two levels: normal irrigation (control) and irrigation interruption from the silique formation stage to the next stage (late-season drought stress). The genotypes included four promising lines (L1112, L1091, L1093, L1206), and a cultivar (Okapi) as a control. Results showed that delayed sowing and drought stress increased carbohydrate content and decreased seed yield, with the highest carbohydrate content and highest yield loss in L1112 and the lowest carbohydrate and lowest yield loss in the L1206 line. Among the physiological traits measured, stomatal resistance had the highest degree of correlation and the highest direct negative effect on seed yield, which declined with increasing stomatal resistance. L1112 had the highest stomatal resistance (52.76 s cm-1) in delayed sowing and drought stress conditions. Therefore, L1206 and L1112 were revealed to be resistant and sensitive lines, respectively.
