Opis:
Poultry manure is an ammonia-rich substrate that inhibits methanogenesis, causing severe problems to the anaerobic digestion process. In this study, the effect of different natural zeolite concentrations on the mesophilic anaerobic digestion of poultry waste inoculated with well-digested swine manure was investigated. A significant increase in methane production was observed in treatments where zeolite was added, compared to the treatment without zeolite.Methane production in the treatment with 10 g dm-3 of natural zeolite was found to be 109.75% higher compared to the treatment without zeolite addition. The results appear to be influenced by the addition of zeolite, which reduces ammonia toxicity in anaerobic digestion and by the ammonia-tolerant swine inoculum.

Opis:
Adsorption of nitrogen on the rapeseed oil cake and rapeseed oil cake with wheat meal extrudates was investigated. The results are presented as adsorption-desorption isotherms. The Brunauer-Emmet and Teller equation was used to analyse the experimental sorption data. To obtain estimates of the surface area and surface fractal dimension, the sorption isotherms were analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmet and Teller and Frenkel-Halsey-Hill equations. Mesopore analysis was carried out using the Dollimore and Heal method. The properties and surface characteristic of rapeseed oil cake extrudates are related to different basic properties of particular samples and duration of the extrusion process. Extrusion conditions lead to essential differences in particular products. For all kinds of rapeseed oil cakes the amount of adsorbed nitrogen was different, but for the rapeseed oil cake extrudates a large amount of adsorbed nitrogenwas observed. The average surface area of the rapeseed oil cake extrudates was about 6.5-7.0 m2 g-1, whereas it was equal to about 4.0-6.0 m2 g-1 for rapeseed oil cake with the wheat meal extrudates. In the case of non-extruded rapeseed oil cake and wheat meal, the dominant group included ca. 2 and 5 nmpores. The values of surface fractal dimension suggested that the surface of the extrudates was more homogenous than that of the raw material. Duration of the extrusion process to 80 s resulted in a decrease in the specific surface area, surface fractal dimension, and porosity of the extrudates.

Opis:
The effects of storing honey for 18 months at room temperature or in a freezer as well as the impact of heating it to different temperatures (30, 40 and 50°C) were studied. The rheological parameters of fresh rapeseed honey were compared to those of the non-stored and unheated samples (control). The storage temperature significantly influenced the rheological behaviour of the honey (except adhesiveness). Higher values of all textural parameters were found in frozen honey in comparison with control and room temperature samples. However, in comparison with the control samples, higher values (around twice) of the dynamic viscosity, firmness, work and adhesive force were produced by honey stored at room temperature. Thermal treatment of the honey heated at 30, 40 and 50°C influenced a continuous decrease in all of the textural properties (with the exception of the cohesive force) compared to the control samples (20°C). The average change in the texture-temperature coefficient for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force from 20 to 50°C was similar (between 6.62 and 4.09%). Significant, very close and positive Spearmen’s rank correlations (0.894 ≤ rS ≤ 0.987) were observed for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force. Lower correlations (0.524 ≤ rS ≤ 0.684) were found between the cohesive force and all of the other textural properties.

Opis:
Basic soil chemical properties were assessed in a long-term tillage and crop rotation experiment 15 years after its establishment on a Chernozem in Raasdorf (Austria) with four tillage treatments – mouldboard ploughing, no-till, deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage – and two crop rotations. The following parameters were assessed: pHCaCl2, pHH2O, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, total organic carbon and total carbon. Among which, pHCaCl2, pHH2O, and total carbon increased with soil depth while electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, and total organic carbon decreased with soil depth. The differences between tillage treatments occurred after 15 years in the upper soil layer from 0-5 cm with higher values of electrical conductivity under no-till, deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage than with mouldboard ploughing, higher values of cation exchange capacity and total nitrogen for no-till than for mouldboard ploughing (with deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage showing intermediate values) and more total organic carbon for no-till and deep conservation tillage than for mouldboard ploughing. At a 5-10 cm depth, electrical conductivity was higher for no-till than for mouldboard ploughing. Values of pHCaCl2 and pHH2O did not differ between tillage treatments in any soil layer. In deeper soil layers, tillage did not affect the analysed parameters. Crop rotation did not affect any of the analysed soil chemical properties.

Opis:
Wood pellets are increasingly being used to produce energy as a part of the decarbonization process of the economy, but their handling is associated with several problems, which usually requires that the equipment used has to be modified and improved. The discrete element method is a numerical technique suitable for simulating individual particles and handling systems. This paper focuses on the determination of the mechanical and physical parameters for wood pellet particles which are required to develop a discrete element method model to improve handling and transport systems. This study reports the experimentally determined values for wood pellet particles with respect to particle density, modulus of elasticity, particle – particle and particle – wall coefficients of restitution, and particle – particle and particle – wall coefficients of friction. Following the previous findings by other researchers with large samples of bulk material, it has been found that the modulus of elasticity for individual wood pellets depends on the water content, and the particle – wall coefficient of restitution depends on the impact velocity.
