    This article explores the different ways in which gay men in Serbia perceive PrEP as a novel method of HIV prevention. In the article, I draw on data from my research on PrEP use among thirty gay men in Belgrade. The use of PrEP is still very low amongst gay communities in Serbia due to their rejection of PrEP and due to the stigma around PrEP use. In Serbia, the social significance of PrEP relates to HIV status disclosure on gay social/dating media. Paradoxically, on gay dating sites, the signifier “PrEP” blurs the line between HIV positive gay men – who have achieved undetectable HIV status through a potent ARV therapy – and those HIV negative gay men who use PrEP as a preventative tool against HIV transmission. In the article, I will argue that a new form of gay identity has emerged on gay dating apps in Serbia – “undetectable, on PrEP”. This new identity emerges from confusion in HIV risk assessment. The use of PrEP has been seen as a marker to denote someone’s HIV negative status and to protect them from HIV transmission. However, some gay men with an undetectable HIV status would like to be regarded as HIV negative even though they are not, and thus they use the signifier “on PrEP” to highlight their desire to claim an HIV negative status. PrEP has many symbolic valences: from HIV status disclosure to assumed promiscuity. As I will argue, while the health paradigm is of utmost importance for Serbian gay men, internalized stigma additionally drives the low uptake of PrEP amongst gay communities in Serbia, thus contributing to the confusion regarding PrEP use and the overall approach to HIV prevention. This article finds that those respondents who accept PrEP without stigma or confusion regarding their HIV status are also more willing and ready to recommend using PrEP to other gay men.

    Artykuł dotyczy zagadnień związanych z jednopłciowym rodzicielstwem. Rodziny tworzone przez lesbijki i gejów wychowujących dzieci to wyzwanie dla tradycyjnych socjologicznych definicji rodziny. Autorka przedstawia najpierw propozycje nowych definicji adekwatnych do współczesności. Następnie przytacza podstawowe dane wynikające z badań rodziców jednopłciowych i ich dzieci. Dodatkowo prezentuje wypowiedzi polskich lesbijek i gejów na temat ich postaw wobec jednopłcio wego rodzicielstwa.
    The article concerns issues related to same-sex parenting. Families made up of lesbians and gays raising children are a challenge for traditional sociological definitions of family. First, the author will present suggestions as to new definitions that would perhaps be more adequate to the present times. Then, she will quote some basic data that emerge from the research on same-sex parents and their children. Additionally, some statements of Polish lesbians and gays about their attitude towards same-sex parenting will be introduced.

    The essay proposes a reinterpretation and revaluation of Henry Blake Fuller’s 1919 novel Bertram Cope’s Year and argues that it deserves permanent currency within the canon of gay fiction. My reinterpretation and revaluation of it is based on the premise that readings of it over the past 50 years (since Edmund Wilson’s 1970 essay on Henry Blake Fuller’s fiction in the New Yorker) have failed to understand its representation of homosexuality. Criticism of the novel has been based on post-Stonewall assumptions of what a 'gay novel’ should be and what cultural work is should perform. The post-Stonewall paradigm of the gay novel is that it is a coming-of-age story, a Bildungsroman, focused on a protagonist who, through a process of self-discovery, arrives at an acceptance and affirmation of his sexual identity. The prototype is Edmund White’s A Boy’s Own Story, with E. M. Forster’s Maurice a precursor. To appreciate Bertram Cope’s Year, we must, I argue, abandon post-Stonewall presuppositions of what we should expect from a gay novel. Bertram Cope’s Year is not a coming-of-age novel. Rather it is a comic novel formed from Fuller’s successful fusion and subversion of the romantic comedy, the comedy of manners, and the campus novel. Bertram Cope is a comic hero who ultimately triumphs over the efforts of a college town, presided over the matchmaking socialite Medora Phillips, to marry him to one of the three young ladies in her circle. He is rescued from this unwanted marriage by his boyfriend, who arrives to save him from the unwanted marriage. Fuller successfully exploits the conventions of the comic novel to tell a story that anticipates one of the aspirations of the gay liberation movement half a century later. As such, it deserves permanent currency.

    W niniejszym artykule chciałbym przybliżyć czytelnikom nieznaną w naszym regionie anglojęzyczną twórczość Patricii Nell Warren na przykładzie jej najbardziej znanego utworu The Front Runner (1974), powieści, w której autorka porusza kwestie homofobii i mizoginii w sporcie, jak również różne doświadczenia ujawniania homo-seksualnej orientacji dwóch pokoleń mężczyzn. Biorąc pod uwagę koncepcję potrójnej mimesis Paula Ricoeura, skupię się na relacji między własnym doświadczeniem autorki a narracyjną problematyką powieści, jak również wieloznaczną recepcją utworu wśród przedstawicieli społeczności LGBTQ+. Pragnę pokazać, że w kontekście amerykańskim The Front Runner może pełnić rolę tekstu kultury i medium pamięci, a dla nowych europejskich czytelników stanowić potencjalne źródło pamięci protetycznej, dostarczające literacką reprezentację doświadczenia ujawnienia orientacji homoseksualnej i zmieniających się postaw społecznych wobec niebinarnych ról płciowych i nieheteroseksualności zaraz po zamieszkach w Stonewall i przed epidemią AIDS. Pragnę też zauważyć, że zapoznanie polskich czytelników z prozą Warren może stać się impulsem do queerowej reinterpretacji wcześniejszej poezji autorki Tragedii pszczół.
    Before coming out of the closet and publishing a series of successful gay novels, Patricia Nell Warren was known as Patricia Kilina, wife of a Ukrainian émigré writer George Tarnawsky. Her early poetry, written in Ukrainian, includes numerous references to non-traditional gender roles which she further explored in her anglophone novels. The Front Runner (1974) was published when Warren had already divorced her husband and came out of the closet. It was met with commercial success and became the first contemporary American bestseller about gay love. In this paper, I focus on the mixed reader-response of The Front Runner in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the role of homophobia and misogyny in Patricia Nell Warren’s novel. I argue that The Front Runner provides readers with a thought-provoking literary representation of the changing social attitudes towards non-binary gender roles and non-heterosexuality right after Stonewall and before the AIDS epidemic.

    W tekście przedstawiamy wyniki analizy dyskursu prasowego na temat rodzin z wyboru w Polsce. Porównujemy ze sobą dwie debaty wokół projektów ustawy o związkach partnerskich (na temat projektu ustawy o związkach partnerskich autorstwa Marii Szyszkowskiej z lat 2003-2004 i na temat projektu ustawy o związkach partnerskich autorstwa Grupy Inicjatywnej ds. związków partnerskich z 2011 roku) oraz dwie debaty na temat kampanii społecznych („Niech Nas Zobaczą” z 2003 roku oraz „Miłość nie wyklucza” 2010-2011). Celem analizy była, między innymi, identyfikacja głównych strategii, jakie dominują w dyskursie publicznym, prześledzenie dynamiki ich zmiany oraz próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, co/kto owe zmiany generuje. W artykule ukazujemy czasami paradoksalne/zaskakujące, podobieństwa pomiędzy tymi, którzy w nieprzychylny sposób wypowiadają się o relacjach LGBT oraz tymi, którzy ich bronią. Zastanawiamy się też nad (nie)skutecznością pewnych strategii argumentacyjnych oraz niebezpieczeństwem ich użycia.
    In our article we present the results of the analysis of press discourse concerning families of choice in Poland. We make a comparison between two debates over two projects of same-sex partnership law (written, respectively, by senator Maria Szyszkowska in 2003-2004 and the Initiative Group for Same-Sex Partnership in 2011,) as well as between two debates regarding social campaigns: “Let Them See Us” (2003) and “Love Does Not Exclude” (2010-2011.) The aim of our analysis was to identify strategies that dominate in public discourse as well as to follow through the dynamics of their changes in an attempt to answer the question what/who generates these changes. In our article we point out how paradoxical/surprising the similarities can be between those who are against LGBT relationships and those who defend them. We reflect upon both the (un)effectiveness of some argumentation strategies and the dangers of using them.
