Opis:
On the boundary between cinema and theatreShuji Terayama (1935-1983) was a Japanese avant-garde poet, novelist, film and theatre director, as well as the founder of the very eccentric Japanese theatrical troupe named Tenjo Sajiki. He is a world-renowned character, regarded as one of the most original and influential figures in Japanese modern art. Although he was considered the originator of a series of scandalous events, he was still supported by a range of important Japanese and Europeans stage directors, art designers, writers and poets who who lavishly praised him for his revolutionary art techniques and his genius capable of invoking in the audience something more than just the mere interpretation of a play. The paper revolves around Terayamas representative film works in which cinema and theatre intertwine with each other. The author depicts Terayamas films within the framework of the Japanese New Wave genre, concentrating not only on their intertextual values, but also on Terayamas autobiographical events - indispensable knowledge that facilitates understanding of his works.

This article is an attempt to consider superhero movies as a developing genre of popular cinema. The theory is based on Rick Altman’s “Semantic/Syntactic/Pragmatic” approach to genre. It tries to capture features of superhero blockbusters and their main themes – the most distinctive trait of this genre, according to the author of the text, is supposed to be the relationship between an individual, their “power” and society. The text is both an extension of and a counter-proposal to conclusions made by Tomasz Żaglewski in Kinowe uniwersum superbohaterów.

The paper describes how the characters of House, M.D. interact and relate to each other; it also discusses the role played by specific, semantically charged means of constructing narration. On one hand, the show largely maintains the model of a conventional medical drama, on the other, it deconstructs many of the characteristics inherent in the genre. The paper also attempts to explain the show’s huge popularity (for a certain time in the United States alone it reached 27 million viewers) achieved in spite of going beyond what an average viewer would expect, primarily by the show’s construction and by evoking ideas outside a classic medical drama.

Opis:
The work of Roman Polański has always been a unique example of both craftsmanship and interesting subjects. Each of his films (even of those crushed by the superficial interpretations of the reviewers) functioned perfectly well in popular culture and as an artistic accomplishment. It reconciled the tastes of both sophisticated viewers and those who looked for simple entertainment. Roman Polański’s method of creation entails the use of a number of curtains (genres, popular culture subjects, popular patterns) which cover the deeply hidden truth about the world and relations among people. In The Pianist the subject of the Holocaust was used as the key to show the mechanisms that rule the world. Also in this case the most obvious diagnosis proves to be the least important. The Pianist is not an autobiography dealing with the memories from a getto. Definitely more significant is the attempt to juxtapose the image of a ghetto and its inhabitants with the film language of Roman Polański. It makes it possible to read the problem of the Holocaust against the motifs always present in his work, including the context of the cinema of the kind. In The Pianist Polański joins the precision of a craftsman with the memory of a witness. As a result, using the solutions known from Hollywood films, he tells the story of a ghetto, which is seen as the metapher of the whole world.

The paper discusses the French science fiction short film The Jetty (La Jetée) by Chris Marker. Made in 1962, the black and white film is constructed almost entirely from still photos. The author first gives a summary of the plot and then considers the genre and aesthetic syncretism of Marker’s work. Musical, rhythmical and visual aspects of the movie are also covered. Using Waldemar Frąc’s theory of “possible cinema”, whose main ideas are presented in the article, various possible ways of interpreting the film are shown.

Maciej J. Drygas teaches film direction at Film School in Łódź. His lavishly illustrated recent work “Someone’s else letters” is one of the best Polish editing documentaries ever made. The product of extensive research provided by the author in many archives is sure to provoke much debate and discussion about lack of freedom, breaking law by the state secret institutions, crucial importance of human rights and misery of everyday life conditions in Poland 1944-1989. In so doing Drygas greatly enlarges our knowledge and the scope of any understanding of this period. Marek Hendrykowski’s study is the first complete presentation ever published, covering every aspect of this excellent film, expressing its significance and including detailed analysis of its poetics.

The revision of key topics that are related to film parody. The crucial question of Marek Hendrykowski’s research sounds as follows: what is the semiotic mechanism that gives parodistic effect expressed in the language of motion pictures? According to the author, conditio sine qua non of each parody are: incorrectness, caricatural exaggeration, comic effect, deconstruction, pars destruens and new meaning of old characteristic elements confronting the audience and its common memory. In the light of new reading and revised definition of this term, film parody is not a separate genre but rather meta-genre in its relations to many other film genres and individual screen performances being object of parody

This study is devoted to the key issue for any research on film, film art and audiovisual communication - great semantic figures. Marek Hendrykowski extrapolates the repertoire of basic concepts developed for decades in literary science (author, reader, narrator, narration, character, time, space, events, plot, style, composition, etc.) into academic film studies. Following important scientific ideas formulated half a century ago by the eminent literary theorist Janusz Slawinski, Hendrykowski stresses that the scientific sense of using these categories is not limited only to cataloguing them.

Parabola is the essence of the short film Two Men and a Wardrobe (and likewise Mammals and The Fat and the Lean). Parabola is dominant of the genre, not merely an occasional and distinguishing attribute. In its interior, we find traces of other genres. These include noir comedy, slapstick burlesque, existential drama, the thriller, and drama of the absurd, grotesque and macabre. The poetic dimension of Polanski’s short film, in which reality confronts and permeates the skilfully constructed and captivating fantasy presented by the artist, allowing all the elements of the genre to be combined into a common whole.

The Dramaturgy of Roman Polański’s Two Men with a Wardrobe Marek Hendrykowski’s case study on Polański’s famous student etude Two Men with a Wardrobe reconstructs this wonderful short movie take-by-take: a must for anyone who cares about cinema as art. The young (24 years old) director, together with a team of talented colleagues (cameraman Maciej Kijowski, actors Jakub Goldberg and Henryk Kluba, director’s assistant Andrzej Kostenko and film music composer and jazzman Krzysztof Komeda), demonstrated a very modern way of thinking about the art of the moving image and about the various possibilities hidden in the simple poetics of screen drama. From its opening scene on the beach to the dramatic and nostalgic ending with a comeback to the sea, the film charts two men’s struggles on the difficult path to becoming independent human beings enjoying their own freedom.

The Methodological Problems of Studies on the History of Polish Postwar Documentary The author discusses the narratives and stereotypical (ideological) point of view as a matrix for constructing an overly simple image of the Polish documentary in the postwar period (1944–1955) as shadowed in the untruth of political discourse. In Marek Hendrykowski’s opinion this particular period in Polish documentary film was much more complicated and multi perspectived (in a “dialogical” sense) as a research object posing new questions and opening new perspectives for film historians.
