Opis:
The text describes the backstage of the legendary International Experimental Film Competition in Brussels, which accompanied the Expo-58 Exhibition at a turning point of the political thaw in Eastern and Central Europe. The most important representatives of avant-garde cinema and auteur animation of three generations took part in this event. The Grand Prix was awarded to The House of Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica. The prize became the ticket to a European career for these two young filmmakers. The competition was also remembered as a symbolic beginning of the “Polish school of animation” (or the so-called “Polish school of experimental film”) on the global film market. The author of the article also writes about a difficult return to Poland, about a cash prize that caused many problems, about the successes of Polish films in Brussels, and about the reception of The House in Poland and abroad. Finally, he tries to demonstrate why this bleak and difficult to understand film, which builds opposition to the optimism of Expo Exhibitions, won the main prize, beating over 300 competitors from around the world.

Opis:
The article offers the analysis of how Zygmunt Kałużyński, the film critic of Polityka weekly magazine, described and stigmatized documentary films by Krzysztof Kieślowski, Tomasz Zygadło, Grzegorz Królikiewicz and Krzysztof Gradowski presented at the Cracow short film festival in 1971. Kałużyński criticized and mocked the aesthetics of the Polish “new wave” documentary cinema in a series of articles published in Spring and Summer of 1971. He presented films by brave and talented directors, contradicting the current social and political situation, as the unreflective imitation of the banal television documentary style based on in-front-of-the-camera interviews. The author compares Kałużyński’s proceedings to actions of a British journalist Robert Pitmann described by Tadeusz Różewicz in his essay A Journalist and the Poet. Pitmann conducted a sneering interview with T.S. Eliot for Sunday Express in 1958 and Różewicz comments on the possible effects of his text for its readers.

The text is devoted to discussing the formation methods and the functions of screen space in shots by Mieczysław Jahoda in the films Zimowy zmierzch (directed by S. Lenartowicz) and Pętla (directed by W.J. Has). Mieczysław Jahoda is presented as one of the main initiators of stylistic changes in the films of Polish School in the mid 1950s. The analysis concerns the camera means applied by Jahoda in order to obtain screen effects: light, frame composition, photographic optics and perspective transformation. The film shots by Mieczysław Jahoda are characterized by an exceptional ability to evoke mental space, emotions, memory and imagination via the shapes of screen space. Their feature is a special esthetization aimed at creating the atmosphere of films, as well as symbolic and cultural references.

In Serach of the Form. Images of the Holocaust in student films of the Polish National Film School The article In Search of the Form is a contribution to the research on school films about Holocaust. The author analyzed over 20 short films produced in the National Film School in Lodz in 1948–2010. In great part these films reflect the general trend from the professional cinema of the same period. However young filmmakers appear to be more daring as far form of the films is concerned. Their films are aesthetically original, ofthe refer to genre cinema and combine different genres.

Opis:
How is ballet presented in documentaries? Is Central European cinema different from cinema in the West in this respect? 52 Percent, Rafał Skalski’s documentary about Alla, a girl dreaming of becoming a ballerina, provides an intriguing answer to this question. Th is article compares 52 Percent by Rafał Skalski with two documentaries made in the West (First Position and Only When I Dance), which also show the endeavours of young people who want to fulfil their dreams of becoming ballet dancers. Alla tries to enrol in the famous Russian Agrippina Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Sankt Petersburg. Th e exams are really tough, and she must do additional exercises to lengthen her legs (she lacks 0.4% to achieve the perfect leg-upper body ratio). The girl cannot make her legs longer, although she tries hard. Her days fi lled with exercise are filmed in long, static shots. There is no joy or enthusiasm. Sweat and tiredness are a part of strenuous exercise. Alla does not spin on a roof, nor does she jump rhythmically while cooking, like the characters of First Position and Only When I Dance. There is nothing from a fairy tale or Hollywood in her experiences. Additionally, Skalski’s fi lm breaks the myth of the dancer’s body being strong and inexhaustible. This is how we traditionally look at ballet, where there is no place for showing weakness.

Opis:
Performing as a lecturer and artistic tutor of students’ etudes requires creation of a common platform for discussion and constructive criticism. The above text is an example of didactic pact between the teacher and the student. Analysis of the Rafał Skalski etude Żeby nie było niczego is also an excuse to discuss the composition, construction of the characters and acting roles, as well as so-called "Zatorski spiral", interpretation of ‘becoming’ and truth in dialogue. Discussed scenes of the etude allow to understand the importance of internal tension – a kind of punctum – creating a dramatic and visual potential of the film.

The text refers to the films of black series of Polish document and arising at the same time (1956–1957) etudes of students of the Lodz Film School, dedicated to social issues. Analysis of individual works led to several observation. First, the etudes, like movies of black series, reflecting the social movement of 1956, but their subject matter turned out to be partly different. Appeared in them, for example, political threads. Secondly, the etudes showed many similarities to the professional implementation of the WFD, but only films of Hoffman and Skórzewski can pass as a source of inspiration for students. More frequently students ideas appeared in the improved form in the films of young professionals. Thirdly, the weaker school productions were bolder.

Opis:
The article deals with the relationship between film and painting, as well as the sciences (physics, cosmology) of the 20th century. It introduces the historical context important for the time when Kubrick’s film was made, and addresses the issue of abstraction in cinema, contemporary painting and cosmology, confronting artistic and scientific ideas (the models of the Universe). The starting point for the detailed analysis was “autonomous abstract film” (Alicja Helman), which as a film inside a film combines various cinematic types and genres. The analysis of takes and sequences of this film inside a film made it possible to decipher the director’s idea, which is expressed in intra-film references. The particular results of the research were compared with the possible iconographic context (Gerhard Richter). The inclusion of a diagnosis obtained on the basis of materials examined in the Kubrick Archives in London (Kamil Kościelski), and references to cultural tradition (Plato), supplement the aforementioned considerations in an important way.

The article is an attempt to examining again the three first movies of Andrzej Wajda: Generation, Canal and Diamonds and Ashes, regarding archival protocols and production issues more then strict artistic or auteur factors. The inspiration was both production culture perspective and New Historicism of Stephen Greenblatt. The text shows how many additional factors played decisive role in realising those classical movies and how much the movies were connected with plays for cultural power and dominance in those historical reality. In effect we can observe specific kind of dispersive authorship in which film authors hasn’t full control on the final effects of the movie, for example its social impact and audience reception.
