Opis:
This article is an attempt to consider superhero movies as a developing genre of popular cinema. The theory is based on Rick Altman’s “Semantic/Syntactic/Pragmatic” approach to genre. It tries to capture features of superhero blockbusters and their main themes – the most distinctive trait of this genre, according to the author of the text, is supposed to be the relationship between an individual, their “power” and society. The text is both an extension of and a counter-proposal to conclusions made by Tomasz Żaglewski in Kinowe uniwersum superbohaterów.

The article discusses Władysław Ślesicki’s studies at the Lodz Film School (1950–1955). The years he spent at Film Directing Department were fruitful not only because of a few worth-while writings, but also due to some of his first directing experiences. Ślesicki was an assistant on the set of Kazimierz Karabasz’s school films, but he also directed his own (debut) short movies (the short feature Kawaler Kubiak; the short documentary Jedzie tabor). The claim is also made that these early works foreshadow his unique cinematic style, which Władysław Ślesicki developed especially within the documentary genre and which gave him a lasting place in the history of Polish cinema.

In the rich and colorful Hungarian film history from post-war years to the present day we find an abundance of comedies combining satire, epigram, burlesque, but true parody film among them is not too much, is a rare phenomenon. What is the reason? We are looking for the answers in examples of two trials of parody film: the first and the only parody of James Bond: Az Oroszlan ugrani készül (dir. György Révész, 1969) and Kojak Budapesten (dir. Sándor Szalkai,1980), inspired by the main character of the American television series Kojak. Both attempts are accompanied with specific “side effects”. It tells a lot about the possibilities and limits of the Hungarian film parody.

Opis:
The essay aims to reveal the role of music in the movie Interstellar by Christopher Nolan and its significance in creating an artistic message that relates to the love myths characteristic of European culture and art. The orientation point is the Tristanic myth and the project of musical dramaturgy by Richard Wagner, the founder of the concept of music being the significant layer in a Gesamtkunstwerk, a synthesis of the arts, which strongly inspires i.a. cinema. The article ponders possible messages to be decoded from the music in Nolan’s movie: as a “form of a lover’s discourse” (R. Barthes), “significant form” (Suzanne K. Langer), “symbolic form” (E. Cassirer), responsible for shaping the ambience that constitutes an inherent structural part of the movie in the metaphysical cinema genre. The musical solutions applied by Hans Zimmer in the soundtrack to Nolan’s movie do more than merely imply inspiration from Wagner. They also allow for recognition of the polyphonic way of constructing formal and thematic relations between musical themes and the verbal-visual layer of the movie. This refined artistic project aims at a subtly directed confrontation with the nihilistic picture of love that is representative of melancholic-pessimistic images of the condition of human relationships in the modern culture. The analysed main musical theme, called the “à rebours chord” (i.e. anti-Tristan chord), turns out to be an overt musical manifestation of such a counterpunch and becomes a starting point to telling a story that refers to the concept of love which assumes taking action and fighting for the good of your loved ones, as well as the concept of Caritas and unconditional love. The way that the music and sound of the movie are orchestrated is therefore tightly coupled with its semantic and symbolic message, which allows for perceiving the music as a specific “libration point” of the movie structure. Its function might also be interpreted as a semantic attribute of “a spiritual intelligence”, referring to that which is binding and crucial for the axiological and metaphysical message of the movie.

The first edition of American Film Festival took place in Wrocław (20-24/11/2010) and became a great opportunity to watch both the classic and the latest movies made by the American filmmakers. The article Kino przestronnego kadru (Cinema of a large frame) focuses on the festival documentary section. From among the titles that are mentioned, a special author’s attention is dedicated to two movies: And Everything Is Going Fine (directed by Steven Soderbergh, 2010; a haunting picture of life and death of Spalding Gray, American writer and performer of self-written monologues) and Two Escobars (directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, 2010; a story about the Colombian mafia, soccer, drugs, heroes, bandits and much more). Despite many differences beetwen them, each represents a fine art of making remarkable and moving documentaries and for sure it’s worth interest.

The review A Tale of a Director Who Wants to Be Directed concerns a book written by Jacek Bławut (A Character in a Documentary). Notable Polish filmmaker sums up some of his artistic achievements (not without mentioning the future plans), trying to explain his view on a co-operation with a movie character (especially due to a documentary genre), but also on a directing itself. The review follows the vital points of the book, placing them under two general categories: “author” and “character”. It also recalls (with no abbreviation) something that’s been called as “Dogmas or what’s important for me” – these are ten “rules” that Jacek Bławut (as a director) tries to adapt to all of his film doings.

Religious themes which appear in the cinema in a fashion that differs from the classical view of Bible stories often become problematic for the audience, especially its more religious members, who find such movies blasphemous and sacrilegious. At the same time, it seems that the aim of many such works is not to act against religion, but rather to show the truths of faith in a new perspective. This kind of approach, described as a “strategy of subversion“ based on the affirmation by illusory negation, can be found in the way Kevin Smith created his Dogma (1999). The aim of this article is to examine those aspects of Dogma, which on the one hand undermine the dogmatic character of religion and the commercialization of the Catholic Church, and on the other, expose and emphasize the senses of faith and cultivating religion lying underneath the pop culture in a ostensibly profane form.

The revision of key topics that are related to film parody. The crucial question of Marek Hendrykowski’s research sounds as follows: what is the semiotic mechanism that gives parodistic effect expressed in the language of motion pictures? According to the author, conditio sine qua non of each parody are: incorrectness, caricatural exaggeration, comic effect, deconstruction, pars destruens and new meaning of old characteristic elements confronting the audience and its common memory. In the light of new reading and revised definition of this term, film parody is not a separate genre but rather meta-genre in its relations to many other film genres and individual screen performances being object of parody

The starting point for this paper is the statement that we are witnessing a “mock-documentary boom” in contemporary cinema. Viewers today can be surprised and confused by the variety of “intercrossings” that are used in documentary and fictional strategies. The fact that there has been a growing number of films that do not respect the traditional division between fictional and non-functional cinema deserves deeper consideration. The introduction of the paper is focused on historical sources and classifications of this complex phenomenon (for example: the brothers Lumière tradition contrasts with that of Méliès). The main body of the paper is concentrated on the question of what cinema can offer in lieu of a documentary paradigm. It also tries to explore ontological and epistemological perspectives which can clarify some of the reasons for the popularity of mock-documentary and docufiction productions. It ends with a suggestion that the cinema is a domain of fakes of reality regardless of whether fictional or non-fictional narration is used to tell their stories.

Jakub Popielecki draws on Roger Ebert’s anecdote and discusses similarities between Gus Van Sant’s Gerry and the theatre of Samuel Beckett. The movie and Beckett’s plays (such as Waiting for Godot) share many components: a sexually ambiguous pair of main characters, Buster Keaton’s physical comedy as a source of inspiration and use of wordplay in the title. Is Van Sant’s film a rethinking of “Beat Generation”-inspired road movie mythology? Are the characters played by Matt Damon and Casey Affleck nomads (as described by Gilles Deleuze)? What connects Van Sant’s and Beckett’s works with the phenomenon of boredom? Popielecki sees the minimalist style of these artists as a sign of a new attitude towards the problem of aesthetic experience.

Opis:
Mikołaj Jazdon in his article presents an analysis and interpretation of a documentary that became a “trademark” of the young generation’s cinema from the decade of the Cinema of Moral Anxiety in Poland. Zygadło filmed the social behaviour of students in a Warsaw primary school to depict the fatal influence of the communist system on Polish youth, who were encouraged to tattle on each other. The method of portraying a social group from one place, as in Zygadłos Primary School, became popular among other documentary filmmakers from his generation. They began to shoot films about institutions like factories, schools or hospitals, focusing on the social relations between the people working there. These films were intentionally made as metaphors of Poland in the 1970s and of the rules operating in a country ruled by the Communist Party. The auteur strategy of depicting reality in a “pars pro toto” manner allowed documentary filmmakers to outwit the Party censors.
