Opis:
The text is an attempt at analysing the natural movement of Pleszew’s population in 1751–1793. The research has been based on birth certificate registers as well as city records from the time in question which provide collective information on the demographic phenomena at work. The article presents the vital statistics of the population of the town of Pleszew in 1751– –1793. The source materials were birth certificate registers from Pleszew parish and city records. In order to analyze the collected material it was imperative to assess the value of the research sources. The results indicate that the birth certificate registers were carefully maintained and in accordance with the prevailing rules but with short breaks in the registration. An analysis of marriages has shown that the most popular months for concluding this sacrament were January and February. The article also discusses the influx of German population in the vicinity of Pleszew and its consequences. The author draws attention to the accumulation of marriage vows in January and February, the consequence of which was the highest number of births between January and March. Comments are provided on the issue of naming. The mortality rate in the population has been analyzed. This article attempts to present the fate of selected Pleszew families in order to prove that vital records also allow to reconstruct family trees. To further study this issue, however, the scope of the source needs to be broadened.

Opis:
Proto-industrialization is an interesting phenomenon that has been discussed for more than half a century. The most disputed part of this theory is the demographic aspects. The submitted article focuses on research opportunities of the proto-industrial family in the 18th and 19th centuries; the research focuses on Stružinec u Lomnice nad Popelkou, a village in north-eastern Bohemia. Only a comprehensive study of demographic indicators makes it possible to establish the basic differences between the family in proto-industrial and agriculture-based areas.

Opis:
Many untrue hypotheses and information appeared around the “alleged” witchcraft trial in Doruchow in the second half of the 18th century, which resulted in the death of sever-al women. The text introduces a new category of sources: vital records registers and consistory records, which proved to be valuable material not only confirming the event itself, but also revealing the initiators of the trial, defendants, and witnesses.

Opis:
For decades, the history of medicine, healing, medical culture, health, etc. has been fascinating researchers: historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and doctors alike. Researchers in this field use source materials that have been known in science for a long time, often creating a questionnaire of issues and questions that no one has posed so far. Elżbieta Nowosielska’s publication, entitled „Melancholy, madness and other ‘headaches’ in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th and 18th centuries” (2021) belongs to this group of works. It is clear to anyone who has dealt with books of miracles and graces that, on the basis of the miraculous literature, if properly explored, E. Nowosielska would have come close to one of the goals outlined in the book’s introduction – a possibly complete picture of the approach to madness or melancholy. The author underestimated the effort made by Jowita Jagla, a researcher into the books of miracles and graces, and the votive offerings, who discusses issues related to epilepsy in her work, and disregarded several other texts. This does not speak very well of the search she carried out.

Opis:
Reading Ottoman-Polish diplomatic relations leads to a clear conclusion that in the late 18th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had an opportunity to enter into an international alliance as a partner alongside the Ottoman Empire. Topaktaş has not attempted to create hypothetical scenarios regarding the survival or otherwise of the First Republic, but has reconstructed the idea of an Ottoman-Polish alliance in a scholarly manner, drawing on a rich body of historical sources. The publication contains innovative insights from the fields of history, political science and international relations. It takes into account the latest state of research and the results of searches personally conducted by the author. Topaktaş has almost managed to avoid factual mistakes and errors. The scale of the research apparatus used and the high specialisation of the technique of the historian of Polish-Turkish relations makes this monograph a work complementary to the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Poland and the Ottoman Empire. The reader is presented with a convincing argument alternating with a narrative that gives the impression of a reportage on the journey and stay of Franciszek Piotr Potocki - all wrapped up in academic terminology. The author has accomplished the research goals declared in the introduction. I personally believe that Topaktaşs book is a groundbreaking and inspiring treatise on the late 18th century. It is worth recommending to enthusiasts of Ottoman studies, but also to students of history interested in the subject.
