Opis:
The article’s goal is to highlight burial rituals and funerary services in the Polish community in Lvov in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries as the issues are rarely discussed in academic research. Poles (who prevailed in the city) were typically Roman Catholics. The funerary ritual was modelled by the Catholic tradition. In the last decades of the 19th century, funeral parlours emerged in Lvov to render services to the city’s affluent and poor inhabitants alike. In the late 19th century, the larger cities in Galicia including the capital city of Lvov followed the example of large centres in the Habsburg empire where private, licensed funeral parlours were established, rendering comprehensive funerary services. In the first decade of the 19th century, the Lvov authorities decided to affect the prices of funerary services. One of the reasons was intention to offer standard funerary services to the city’s poor inhabitants. The magistrate’s goal was to have its own communal funeral parlour which would also handle funerals of the city’s less affluent inhabitants. In 1909, the “Concordia” Municipal Funeral Parlour started operations. In the Polish community in Lvov, the burial ritual was directly related to the Catholic tradition. In the last two decades of the 19th century, an obituary published in the press made its way to the burial ritual in Lvov in the form still used today i.e. information about the death and the date of the funeral, sometimes also about a memorial service, graphically marked with a thick black border with a cross. The funerary ritual which emerged at that time remained largely unchanged in the Second Polish Republic (1918–1939). The situation changed after WWII when Lvov was under the Soviet and Ukrainianrule. While in this difficult time the Catholic church was persecuted, Poles living in Lvov made an effort to invite a priest to funerals of their next of kin.

Opis:
The outbreak of WWI offered hope to Poles from Eastern Europe’s Galicia that the so-called Austria-Poland solution would ensue. In the face of military and political weakness of Austria-Hungary, the idea failed to take root. The proclamation of the Act of 5th November 1916 indicated that the Polish state would be reconstructed under the auspices of the Second Reich. This arouse resentment among Poles living in Galicia who had hoped to be united with their compatriots in the Kingdom of Poland. During the outbreak of WWI, a majority of Poles in Galicia were in favour of the Austria-Poland solution. They hoped that once the Kingdom of Poland was taken away from Russia, Franz Joseph I would become the king of Poland. As a result, a new and powerful state would emerge: Austria-Hungary-Poland. In order to pursue this idea, Poles established the Supreme National Committee and the Polish Legions, a military force. Austria’s military defeats and general weakness of the monarchy put an end to these plans as the politicians in Vienna failed to be equally willing to pursue the solution. The initiative regarding the Polish cause was taken over by Germans and the Act of 5th November was proclaimed. This indicated that the reconstruction of the Polish state would be modelled by the Reich rather than the Habsburg monarchy. On the one hand, the proclamation of the Act of 5th November was welcomed in Galicia: it was the first document taking the Polish cause to the international arena. On the other hand, the end of the Austria-Poland idea led to resentment. Poles in Galicia were afraid that they would be left outside the new Polish state.

This article takes a fresh look on the status of Galicia within the Habsburg Monarchy between the late 18th and the early 20th century, presenting the obstacles and opportunities of economic growth faced by imperial policy-makers. At the same time, an analysis is presented of the impact of the imperial experience on the process of forging national identities. The emphasis has been placed on how the increasing national fragmentation in a multi-cultural region affected economic prosperity.

Opis:
This article presents the opinions of Stanisław Koźmian (1836–1822) on the way in which the Polish cause was resolved during WWI until the Act of 5th November. According to Koźmian, the best solution was the Austrian-Polish concept revolving around incorporating the Kingdom of Poland to the Habsburg monarchy. This article is an attempt at presenting the opinions of Stanisław Koźmian, a Krakowbased member of the Stańczycy political group, on the development of the Polish cause in 1914–1916. Koźmian was a supporter of the so-called Austrian-Polish solution which consisted in incorporating the Kingdom of Poland to Austria-Hungary and granting it more autonomy. However, he did not postulate that the monarchy should be restructured towards the Austria-Hungary-Poland trialism as he realised that Hungarians would oppose this suggestion. According to Koźmian, the Act of 5th November was a poor solution as it did not offer the Kingdom of Poland any guarantee of independence. It only created “written down” independence.
