Opis:
Prince Leon Sapieha was one of the most prominent Polish politicians and socio-economic activists of the period of national subjugation. Given that Sapieha was involved in taking most political and economic decisions in Eastern Galicia in the years 1836–1875, his views, beliefs and ideas were of utmost importance for shaping the opinion of the Galician society. The experience of the November uprising brought about Sapieha’s fi rm rejection of an uprising as a means of regaining independence by Poland. Neither did he count on the intervention of the European powers in the Polish interest. He believed that independence could be achieved either as a result of a European war in which the invaders would fi ght on opposite sides, or, alternatively, owing to international treaties. A supporter of organic work, Leon Sapieha held that the main task of the Polish society was to build the political, cultural and economic power of the nation, with the help of the peasants, won over for the national cause. An advocator of public education regardless of sex and state, Sapieha perceived education as the only means of the national awakening of the peasantry and attached fundamental importance to improving the situation of the peasants and other social groups. In the Prince’s view, religious and moral values should be inherent in the socio-economic and political life. Sapieha believed in the distinctiveness of the national identity of Poles and Ruthenians. Both nations were supposed to cooperate closely. His socio-political and economic ideas put Sapieha close to the right, his program almost identical to those of other positivists. Leon Sapieha’s opinions were largely shaped by his social standing, his own experience, education and upbringing he received in the family home. His ideas were to some extent infl uenced by the then political thought, including that of Edmund Burke, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas Macaulay. Of great importance were the opinions of Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, Andrzej Zamoyski and Franciszek Ksawery Drucki-Lubecki. Leon Sapieha’s major goal was sovereign Poland.

Opis:
While the expeditions of prince Casimir and later prince John I Albert took place in different political situations, they share some similarities. Both military campaigns had the same background in the regions of north-eastern Hungary. The study focuses on the power support of two members of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Hungary. Prince Casimir’s expedition of 1471–1472 and Prince John I Albert’s expedition of 1490–1492 were characterised by continuous Hungarian support. Due to intensive contacts in the borderlands, the Polish party was supported by members of several generations of the magnate families, as well as local landowners. The Jagiellonians were mainly supported by the Rozgonyi and Perényi families in the regions of Šariš and Zemplín. The reasons for this multi-generational support can be attributed to the proximity of the magnates and their estates to Poland, and in the personal, economic and cultural ties in the borderlands. It is significant that, despite the failure of the expeditions, the rebellious magnate families were not stripped of their status, unlike lower-ranking nobles.

Based on a comparison of the contemporary Annals of Fulda, Annals of St. Bertin, Chronicle of Regino and papal letters, the author analyses the position of the Moravian prince Svatopluk I (871–894). Through the comparison of Svatopluk with his contemporaries, princes of Brittany, the analysed texts are further studied in the framework of the Carolingian policy and political thinking.

Opis:
The marriage of Princess Doubravka to Prince Mieszko I is a specific example of acculturation in Central-Eastern Europe when Christianity came from Bohemia. It was striving to emancipate its own diocese, further east, to emerging Poland. The study first addresses the genealogical issues of Bolesław I the Braves family and considers the identification of Doubravkas mother (Biagota?, Slavníkovci?). The impulse for the Christianisation of Poland was Prince Mieszkos defeat in 963; he needed military allies while a certain crisis of identity could have arosen („culture shock” – the disfavour of ethnic „daemons”). In his chronicle, Thietmar of Merseburg rather obscured the information about the marriage, through a certain bias against Mieszko, and especially towards his son Bolesław. The baptism took place before the diocese was established; it was a cultural transfer „from court to court”, from Prague to Poznań, perhaps due to the similarities between the Czech and Polish dynastic traditions. The goals of Mieszkos marriage were achieved in 967 (victory of the combined Polish-Bohemian army over Wichmann, birth of Mieszkos son Bolesław).
