In this article we refl ect on the theoretical foundations of Jerzy Topolski’s history of historiography. In the fi rst part of the text, entitled “On truth in historiography – pragmatically and idealistically,” Maria Solarska shows the relationship between Topolski’s theory of truth and his view of the community of historians, of that community’s methodological and ethical rules. In the second part of the text, “Historiography between truth and myth,” Maciej Bugajewski raises a question about Topolski’s defi nition of the diff erence between truth and myth. In our opinion Topolski wanted to see the history of historiography as the history of truth about the past.

In the paper I resume some problems concerning the teaching of historiography at the Faculties of History in Poland. Having thirty hours to present historiography from Antiquity to Present Times, the Polish scholars must answer to the following questions: is it necessary to discuss with students every stage of the development of history, or maybe would it be bett er to focus on the twentieth century historical schools and tendencies? In what proportion the national history should be included in the universal one? Based on my personal teaching experience, I try to show how that kind of dilemas could be resolved.

From time to time we ask ourselves about the status of our discipline. Th e answers to the questions regarding the methodology of history, the epistemology of history, the theory of history depend on the theoretical presuppositions of the researcher. Th e expectation that there is a single paradigm of research in the history of historiography requires the recognition and consent that there is one single mode of refl ecting on history. In this article, I argue that the history of historiography can be understood as history of historical thinking in all its contexts.

In this article the authors raise the question of how to understand the concept of counter-history. In addition, the authors deal with the relationship between counter-history and historiography. In the fi rst part of the text, Counter history and the construction of the community, Maria Solarska refers to the diff erence between the legal-philosophical discourse and the historicopolitical discourse, the diff erence worked out by Michel Foucault. Th e second part of the text, Historiography as a form of counter-history, Maciej Bugajewski refers to Walter Benjamin’s On the concept of history and analyzes the counter-history as a practice of change in real history.

The article discusses the main problems of the contemporary history of historiography. The author states that the greatest problem of historiography in the 21st century is big data. The next important issue are the test methods for big data. One of the paradigms, which att empts to explore the world of big data, is digital history. Historians of historiography who seek new possibilities to research the historiographic phenomena believe that the traditional historiography has also become obsolete in its academic form. Th ey think of methods that would allow building a coexistence of the traditional model of historiographic research, which has been simplifi ed to erudite research and presentation of historians – masters with a concept that respects the dynamics of historic thinking, included within the contexts of a political, ideological, and social epoch. In this article I argue that contemporary researchers in the Lodz historiographic center try to remain faithful to “the historiographic testament” of M. H. Serejski and his disciples. Th e texts of A. Brzezinska, J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki reveal the continuation of “classical” patt erns of historiographical research. Chronologically, they primarily concern the Polish historiography in the second half of the 19th and in the 20th century and the historiography in other countries – Russia and France – in the 20th century. In contrast to previously published works, our studies focus more oft en on the widely-understood contemporaneity. In particular we are researching women’s history (J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki), historical anthropology (A. Brzezińska), and the memory and politics of history (R. Stobiecki).

The systematic research in the fi eld of the history of historiography at the University of Rzeszow ought to be connected with the establishment of the Department of History of Historiography and Methodology of History at the Institute of History in 1993. Th e cooperation with scientifi c circles from Poland, Austria, Germany and Ukraine led to the production and publication of a number of papers on the historical community of Lviv (until 1939) as well as theoretical studies on the history of historiography and biography. Owing to the rich ethnic and cultural mosaic, the former capital of Galicia created a unique opportunity to develop methodological concepts that introduced new fi elds of analysis and interpretation of sources. In the undertaken studies, we managed to combine a traditional, elitist and personalistic way of looking at a historical environment in cultural contexts, including areas where historiography the history of culture meet, and so do thehistory of education, the methodology of history, and the history of institutions, archives, libraries and scientifi c societies. Th e aim at that time was to focus on the problems of Polish and Ukrainian historiographies that created nations, the teaching and popularization of history, national heroes, and the role played by historians in the socio-political life of the Polish and Ukrainian nations. Particular att ention was drawn to the processes of forming the history of historiography and methodology of history as separate historical subdisciplines, and Ukrainian scientifi c achievements in these fi elds were analyzed and the trends of their further development were pointed out. The article discusses the issue of teaching the history of historiography in the context of the values and goals that students of history declare as important to them. Based on the survey, it can be stated that for the students of history at AMU two important values are prevalent: intellectual development and work for the benefi t of society (understood as the commemoration of things worth remembering). It is also important for them to acquire skills useful in future work. “The history of historiography” as an academic subject may enable the realization of these values and goals. A lecturer in the history of historiography can show students the relationship of historical knowledge to social problems. She/he can also introduce modern methods of data analysis to present the problem of reception of historiography in the modern world.

The article att empts to defi ne the history of historiography as a subdiscipline of history; it indicates the numerous competences of historians of historiography which are nessesary for undertaking an (auto)refl ection around the history of their discipline, for touching the theoretical and methodological aspects of historiography, and for the study of historicity of historiographical texts. Th e author asks about the current status of the history of historiography and new horizons of research. Regarding the fi eld of changes in the ways of comunication, she sees potential chances for increasing the interest of new recipients in the history of historiography. The author amplifi es the weft of reception, understood as a phenomenon that belongs to the comunication situation occuring between the author of transmission and his recipients. The author refers to the inspiration of the methodological conception of the school of reception aesthetics from Constance (W. Iser, R. Jauss) and the hermeneutics of H-G. Gadamer. Reception is a new concept for presenting the history of historiography as a fi eld of research on the historicity of historical works.

In this article the author argues for the rapprochement between the methods and questions of the history of historiography and the questionnaire of the sociology of knowledge. The sociological perspective can inspire both the research on the communities of professional historians and the functioning of the historiographical knowledge in social and political structures. The author analyzes diff erent dimensions of the political functions of historiography and emphasizes the diff erence between the utilitarian and scientific aspects of historical knowledge.
