Opis:
Ten new determinations of the stable sulphur isotope content of anhydrite from Badenian rock salt in the Hrynivka 525 borehole (Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep) show that δ34S values in anhydrite range from +20.2 to +22.7‰ and the average value of δ34S is +21.4 ± 0.3‰. Those values are similar to those of the Neogene marine sulphates. Comparison to other geochemical data (chemical composition of the brine contained in fluid inclusions and the bromine content in halite) suggests that the Badenian Carpathian Foredeep evaporite basin was supplied predominately by seawater solutes where, at different stages of salt accumulation, the influence of continental waters with lighter isotopic compositions of dissolved sulphate was important. The isotopic composition of sulphur (δ 34S) of Badenian seawater, calculated on the basis of sixty analyses of anhydrite related to halite of the Carpathian Region, is approximately +20.3‰, this value being similar to the sulphur isotopic composition of present-day seawater. The δ 34S value for Badenian seawater may have been slightly higher if we consider potential changes of the brine composition of salt-bearing basins caused by inflow of continental waters enriched in light 32S isotopes.

Opis:
The salt deposit in Bochnia is located in the marginal zone of the Carpathian Foredeep. The salt succession, composed of rock salt deposits, with clay stone, mudstone and zuber interbeds was, in its original location, ca. 80 m thick. The carbonized organic material described herein occurs within three salt units: in the southern salts, in the middle salts, and in the northern salts. There are two petrographic forms of coal in the Bochnia rock salt succession: xylite and gelitic coal. Xylites are fragments of fossil wood. Externally, xylite demonstrates a fibrous texture, and can be splintered along the fissility with uneven transverse fractures. The fragments are strongly gelified and show a zonal structure: their internal parts are made of highly cracked textinite, although the external part of the xylite fragments is built of ulminite. The gelitic coal was found in the form of lenticles, formed exclusively of euulminite. Their main mineral components include metasideronatrite (Na242

Opis:
The stable isotope compositions of oxygen and sulfur from gypsum samples derived from borehole cores of the Wapno Salt Domecap-rock have been determined. The d18O values were measured (for both the SO4 and the H2O) in bulk samples of gypsum(CaSO4 2H2O) and in its dehydrated equivalents (CaSO4). The SO4 is enriched in the heavy oxygen isotope, which unequivocally indicates the Zechstein sea as the place of origin of the sulfate. The variable δ18O values of the H2O (water of crystallization) indicate different conditions (and stages) of diagenetic processes of these samples, primarily recrystallization (hydration) episodes. Two groups ofgypsum were distinguished: (1) a group in which the δ18O values of H2O range between -9.0 and -10.2‰ (interpreted as gypsum in equilibrium with recent or subrecent meteoric water), (2) a group in which the d18O values of the H2O were less than -10.2‰ (this gypsum hasrecrystallized in the presence of water enriched in the light isotopes of oxygen). In addition, in one single analysis the δ18O value of the H>sub>2O amounts to -5.6‰ (gypsum with mixed isotopic composition).
