Opis:
The Sudetes is a block-faulted mountain range in Central Europe, at the NE margin of the Bohemian Massif. In the late Cenozoic it has been subject to differen ial up lift and subsidence and currently represents a horst-and-graben structure, superimposed on older relief due to rock-controlled denudation and erosion. In this paper, the distribution of steep slopes (>15grade and >25grade) is analyzed using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of 50 m spatial resolution, and their morphotectonic significance is discussed. Steep slopes occur in four major settings: heavily dissected and most elevated highlands, straight mountain fronts, narrow sinuous escarpments, and deeply incisedriver valleys. The former in particular may indicate areas subject to recent uplift, which is followed by efficient fluvial incision, so that little pre-up lift topography has survived. The image of many mountain fronts on the slope map is rather poor, which may be explained by the mechanical weakness of the rock building the footwall. At the sametime, the association of the majority of tectonically-induced steep slopes with the most resistant rocks suggests that the intensity of recent uplift is generally low compared with the long-term rates of denudation and erosion.

Opis:
Slow, long-term ground deformations in the Dąbrowa Basin (southern Poland) were identified based on ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images that were processed by means of Permanent Scatterer SAR Interferometry (PSInSAR). The Dąbrowa Basin is a region where two major factors can affect surface stability: intensive coal exploitation and neotectonic processes. In this study, in order to clarify the origin of surface deformations, the authors propose applying a newly developed algorithm of spatio-temporal PSInSAR data analysis. This analysis revealed that subsidence is a characteristic feature of the Dąbrowa Basin. A significant correlation exists between slow, long-term ground deformations and the location of the main tectonic structure of this region. The proposed spatiotemporal analysis of the PSInSAR data additionally showed some degree of correlation between mining activity and the studied deformations. This interconnection is a significant achievement of this study since the deformation values determined by means of PSInSAR were identified in earlier works solely on the basis of Dąbrowa Basin neotectonics.

Opis:
Knowledge of the current tectonic regime plays an essential role in natural hazard assessment, especially in the risk assessment of fault activity. Structural analysis of brittle deformations (using in version techniques) was used to determine the stress field state occurring within Pliocene and Quaternary deposits in the western part of the Central Western Carpathians. The deformation pattern of the reduced stress tensor showed that all structural measurements could be separated into two groups. An older, Late Pliocene fault population was activated un der NNW-SSE oriented extension. A younger, Quaternary fault population reflected origin in a NE–SW extensional tectonic regime and it distinctly showed a change the orientation of the S3 of about 70. The change in tectonic activity, as well as in the stress field orientation, is dated to the Pliocene-Pleis to cene boundary. The Quaternary stress field developed dur ing the post-collisional stage of the orogen. Our study shows that the West ern Carpathian internal units document NE-SW to NNE-SSW extension in the broader region around of the north ern Danube Basin.

Opis:
In areas experiencing low deformation rates, landscapes provide limited evidence of ongoing tectonic activity, being either masked or altered by exogenic processes. Accordingly, the identification of fault activity and near surface deformation is commonly accomplished by multidisciplinary research combining geological, geophysical and geomorphic methods. In this study, Quaternary fault activity in the SW Pannonian Basin is investigated in the region of Bilogora, NE Croatia. The study area is positioned along the SW margin of the Drava Depression that was uplifted during the Pliocene and Quaternary within the Drava Depression Boundary Fault Zone. In this fault zone six GPR profiles were recorded. Reflection patterns, radar facies and truncations determined fault activity and near-surface deformation at four locations with vertical displacements of ≤1 m. At two sites, profiles did not show truncation of the shallowest reflections, however, an elevation difference of ca. 10 m between two palaeostream channels along one of the profiles suggests Quaternary uplift accommodated by a mapped fault. Considering the importance of the seismogenic potential of active faults and their correlation with the seismicity of Bilogora, this research will be followed by additional studies of near-surface strata deformation and palaeoseismological fault properties.
