Opis:
This paper describes the geochemistry and pe trography of three phos phatic nod u lar de pos its in Ragusa Province, south-east Sic ily (Italy). Phosphate nodules of late Burdigalian age are dispersed in a soft, friable packstone matrix within the Irminio Member of the Ragusa Formation. Mineralogical analyses revealed large amounts of calcite (64 to 89 wt. %) and smaller quantities of carbonate-fluorapatite (CFA). P2O5 content was less than 18%. Microtextural observations demonstrated that phosphate precipitation occurred in the microenvironments in the sediment in confined spaces (i.e. cavities, perforations) and not in the shells of microorganisms. The crystals were all of a similarsize (~~1 mm), presented imperfections, and the {0001}CFA and the {1010}CFA forms were clearly apparent. These hexagonal prisms showed reduced growth along their caxis. Our data suggest that bacteria were in volved in the precipitation of CFA.

Opis:
A recently investigated Zechstein Limestone (Ca1, Wuchiapingian) bryozoan fauna from the Polish part of the Southern Permian Basin (SW Poland) is dominated volumetrically and taxonomically by fenestellids. In total six species from five genera are recognized, comprising two species of trepostomes belonging to Dyscritella Girty, 1911 and four fenestellids attributed to Kingopora Morozova, 1970, Kalvariella Morozova, 1970, Acanthocladia King, 1849 and Spinofenestella Termier and Termier, 1971. The greatest biodiversity of the bryozoans in the Ca1 profiles studied is within the slope facies where large, fan-shaped and funnel-shaped reticulate fenestellid colonies up to 10 cm high dominate. In contrast, bryozoans in the marginal (proximal) parts of the basin mostly comprise trepostomes, represented by encrusting plate-like or coil-shaped colonies of Dyscritella Girty, and commonly broken branched colonies of Acanthocladia King. The changes in the biotic composition of the bryozoans and the presence of a dominant colony growth form in the stratigraphical profile of the Ca1 reflect the depositional environment and water energy. These factors stimulate the successive stages of the development of the biota and their settlement, marked by the rich productid-fenestellid assemblages typical of the offshore setting, with the maximum depth in the middle part of the Ca1 in the Grodziec Syncline. The proximal tempestites and foreshore facies of the upper part of the Ca1 (Leszczyna Syncline) terminate the sedimentary cycle of the Ca1, with the remnant, broken bryozoans of Acanthocladia and fenestellids. The relationship between the taxonomic composition, colony growth-patterns, associated biota, and sedimentary structures points to slow sedimentation rate on slope and basin floor of the Ca1 carbonate platform. The fenestellids which are dominated in the studied biota by the reticulate and pinnate colonies of Spinofenestella, Kingopora, Kalvariella and Acanthocladia mark a close palaeogeographical link with the Zechstein (Ca1) bryozoans of Great Britain, Germany and the southern Baltic region.

A fragmentary specimen of the diplomoceratid heteromorph Diplomoceras cylindraceum, one of three ammonite markers used for the definition of the base of the Maastrichtian Stage, is recorded from the middle Campanian of the Roztocze Hills, southeast Poland. The new find, well constrained by associated ammonites and inoceramid bivalves, represents the earliest well-dated occurrence of this species worldwide to date. Therefore, the first occurrence (FO) of D. cylindraceum is conspicuously below the traditional base of the Maastrichtian as defined by the FO of the belemnite Belemnella lanceolata. Indeed, this is also far below the boundary designated in the Global Stratotype Section at Tercis les Bains (Landes, France). A comparison of the FOs of D. cylindraceum in sections acrossEurope clearly shows a significant diachroneity, which diminishes its value for definition of the Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary.

Opis:
Strontium isotope ratios have been determined on 74 anhydrite samples from seven borehole cores in the Polish Zechstein. Five of the borehole cores are located in the basin and isotope results from these samples show a nearly pure marine signal. Results from one borehole core, located near the Zechstein coastline that migrated through time, record a stronger, in consistent influence of continental strontium to a marine base. Intermittent meteoric influence is recorded in anhydrites from other borehole cores close to the carbonate platform that was emergent during the anhydrite deposition. Consistency of isotope values indicates a marine signal and there is a narrow range in consistent values from 87Sr/86Sr near deltasw –215 (0.70702) for the oldest anhydrites and near deltasw –205 (0.70712) for the youngest an hydrites. Comparison with a sea water 87Sr/86Sr curve based on samples in West Texas and a Permian-Triassic boundary value from China shows that the Polish Zechstein in these seven boreholes is latest Permian in age and major deposition represents a short time interval (~2 million years). Strontium isotope ratios reported by other workers indicate some of the younger Zechstein elsewhere indicate even greater continental influence is in agreement with the interpreted sedimentological set ing for those anhydrites.

Weathered local carbonate rocks and fluvial deposits (Wartanian Glacial, OIS 6) are used for comparison. It was found that the content of minerals derived from weathered and redeposited Carpathian Flysch increases from bottom to top of the profile. The entire loess succession accumulated under similar lithodynamic conditions and the palaeosols are of similar character.

This paper summarizes geochemical and palaeopedological investigations of the Upper Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences at the Kolodiiv site. The Kolodiiv 2, 3 and 5 profiles were selected for this study. The Kolodiiv 2 profile contains loesses, interglacial (Eemian) and interstadial (Vistulian) palaeosols. A set of Early Vistulian soils over lying Eemian gyttja and peat is exposed in the Kolodiiv 3 and 5 profiles. The mineral composition of the 50-2 mm silt fraction was analysed using non-oriented powder samples by means of X-ray dif - fraction. The total concentrations of nine major (Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, K and Na) and nine trace elements (Zn, Pb, Ni, Rb, Cr, Sr, Ba, Co, V) as well as the humus content and loss on ignition were measured. The major elements concentrations in mineral deposits from the Kolodiiv 2 loess-palaeosol sequence indicate that the loess particles were derived from poorly weathered source rocks that have under - gone at least one sedimentary cycle. Climatic conditions have strongly in fluenced the mobilization and accumulation of elements in the palaeosol horizons due to the changes in the intensity of weathering and pedogenic processes. For the micromorphological study, ten samples from the Kolodiiv 3 and 5 profiles were used. Thin sections representing the Kolodiiv and Dubno set of palaeosols from Early Vistulian and Middle Pleniglacial show, be sides palaeopedologic characteristics, significant evidence of redeposition of sediments and soils.

Opis:
An Upper Jurassic succession is exposed in the active Rogaszyn Quarry (Kodrąb area) located in the Radomsko Folds structure (central Poland). Six facies types were distinguished, comprising oolitic, oncolitic, biodetrital and pelitic limestones as well as marls and marly clays. Typical lithologies are limestones with coated grains deposited in shall ow-water, fore-shoal, shoal and lagoonal parts of a carbonate ramp. Three types of ooid and three types of oncoid were identified, which display several shapes and sizes, and a complex structure of cortices. The ooid types show micritic, radial-fibrous and mixed, micritic/radial-fibrous cortices. Type 1 oncoids comprise micritic or bioclastic nuclei enveloped by non-laminated or laminated micritic cortices. Type 2 oncoids are composed of micritic or bioclastic nuclei and laminated, fossil-bearing cortices covered by microbial envelopes. Type 3 oncoids are the largest of the oncoids observed, attaining cm-scale dimensions. These oncoids are formed of a Bacinella-dom i nated meshwork incorpo fating smaller ooids and oncoids, or they have bioclastic or micritic nuclei covered by complex cortices with micritic, laminated, fossil-bearing, Bacinella-dominated fabric and microbial envelopes. Boundaries between the specific types of cortical envelopes are usually sharp and accentuated by organic encrustations, elongated bioclasts or borings. Commonly found are chambers of the ichnogenus Entobia representing the boring traces of carbonate-excavating sponges and the cryptoendolithic foraminifer Troglotella incrustants. The complex cortices indicate different growth stages of oncoids at different conditions of currents and microbial activity. Carbonate deposition was accompanied by mixed siliciclastic-carbonate sedimentation resulting in multiple intercalated layers of marls and pelitic limestones as well as marly clays. The deposits exposed in the Rogaszyn Quarry as well as in the Kodrąb area are compared with the neighbouring Upper Jurassic deposits of the Szczerców area and the Sw margin of the Holy Cross Mts. (both central Poland). The successions from the Kodrąb area are generally similar to the Lower Kimmeridgian sequences known from adjacent areas, but with locally observed facies variability.

Accumulation of sediments in the lake basins of the Starogard Lakeland, Northern Poland, an area which was entirely ice-covered during the last glaciation, started at different times, beginning during the Late Glacial. Sedimentation continued till the beginning of the Holocene (Preboreal). The principal factor causing the asynchronous start of the lake development was the variation in melting processes of buried dead-ice blocks. The preservation of dead-ice masses in some depressions until the Preboreal leads to the conclusion that the ultimate disappearance of permafrost in the study area occurred only at the beginning of the Holocene.

Detailed geological and palaeobotanical study of about 400 boreholes through Quaternary deposits in eastern Belarus has enabled the recognition of a number of Middle and Late Pleistocene interglacial sites and demonstrated the stratigraphical position of Alexandrian (Holsteinian) and Muravian (Eemian) Interglacial sediments. These stratigraphic markers are separated by a single glacial sequence, corresponding to the Dnieper (Saalian) Glaciation. This contradicts previous views suggesting the occurrence of two glaciations during the Late Middle Pleistocene in eastern Belarus (Dnieper and Sozh). The glacial sediments represent the recession phases of a glacial stage that may be correlated with the Drenthe Substage of the Saalian Glaciation.

During many years’ research, the stratigraphy of Quaternary deposits in the area surrounding Konin has elaborated. In the young Quaternary strata the Eemian fossil lakeland was established and the exposed Mikorzyn section was found. Previous geological and palynological analyses of the site prove a nearly complete sequence of Eemian and Vistulian deposits. Furthermore, archival records of drill cores indicate that older interglacial sediments may also have been deposited about 10 metres deeper in this particular area. To test this possibility, a relatively deep test borehole—Mikorzyn 1 was carried out in the distance about 70 metres only. The sedimentological and palynological core analyses prove the Eemian age of examined organic materials. The borehole, established only the presence of ca.10 m offset in the bottom part of the Eemian strata. This fact, as well as other faults and Tertiary coal injections into glacial sediments, confirmed the occurrence of neotectonic activity.

New 40Ar-39 Ar isotope ages of mafic and felsic rocks from the contact zone of the Malopolska and Brunovistulian terranes are presented and discussed. A 40Ar-39 Ar age estimation of detrital muscovite from a Lower Devonian "old red" type sandstone drilled on the Malopolska side of this zone was also done. Our studies reveal that three events of Paleozoic magmatic activity took place in the study area. The oldest, late Emsian episode is recorded by a diorite from the core part of an intrusion penetrated by the Sosnowiec IG 1 borehole. A younger, Visean event is documented by a diabase cored in the borehole WB-137. Diabases from Niedwiedzia Góra and from borehole PZ-10, and a rhyodacite from borehole 16-WB gave early Permian (Artinskian-early Sakmarian) ages. The youngest, middle Sakmarian age was obtained for a diabase forming the external parts of the Sosnowiec IG 1 polycyclic intrusion. A diorite penetrated by the Sosnowiec IG 1 borehole was emplaced during the late Emsian extension that preceded the Lochkovian-Pragian? transpression related to the final docking and amalgamation of the Brunovistulian Terrane.

The Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary in Central Iran has been investigated on the basis of conodont faunas (34 species and subspecies) from four sections: Chahriseh near Esfahan, and Kal-e-Sardar, Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu near Tabas. The F-F boundary in the Chahriseh section is located in a one-metre interval between beds EX1 and F-F9 whereas in the Kal-e-Sardar section it is at the base of bed Cly1. The F-F boundary can not be recognized in the Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu sections be cause of uncon form able relation ships and erosion of the upper most late Frasnian beds indicated incidentally by reworked boulders (indicating con temporaneous tectonic activity) and by the abrupt appearance of contrasting environments, including tempestites at the base of the lower Famennian. The best conodont and palaeoenvironmental data were obtained from the Kal-e-Sardar section where a deeper marine environment prevailed during the late Frasnian, be coming shallower in the early Famennian; the Chahriseh section displays small fluctuations in sea level during the early Famennian. The conodont faunas display the inception of the Polygnathus communis group in the late Frasnian (rhenana-linguiformis zones) and the appearance of Icriodus alternatus mawsonae in the Late rhenana Zone. A new age-range is suggested for Polygnathus aequalis Klapper and Lane, from the transitans to the linguiformis zones. Three conodont biozones are represented in the late Frasnian to early Famennian of the Chahriseh section, two late Frasnian and one early Famennian in the Kal-e-Sardar section and two biozones in the late Frasnian and early Famennian of both the Howz-e-Dorah and Ghale-Kalaghu sections. Two new species are described: Polygnathus tabasianus (Early to Late crepida zones) and Polygnathus vachiki (Late rhenana-linguiformis zones).

Opis:
In the Odra and Osobłoga River valleys in the vicinity of the town of Krapkowice, a system of morphological levels is present which is exceptionally extensive compared to other such systems in southern Poland. The extent, origins and chronology of these levels have been the subject of many controversies. In the light of current research, the terraces, which are situated on average 14.5-13, 12-10, 8-6, 6-4 and 3-1 metres above the river level, were formed in the post-Wartanian interval. The main factor driving their development was erosion, which compensated for the effects of large-scale aggradation that had occurred during the anaglacial phase of the Odranian Glaciation (MIS 8) dated to 261 ±15 ka. The impact of climatic conditions on the trends towards fluvial erosion or accumulation was only of secondary importance. According to OSL dating, successive phases of vertical stabilisation of the valley floor occurred ~118.8 ±8.3, 87.7 ±5.7 and 42.0 ±2.0 ka. In the meantime, erosion intensified, which resulted in the formation of lower terrace levels. During the climatic minimum of the Upper Plenivistulian (21.5 ±1.5 ka), under conditions of the delivery of sheet-wash-generated sediment, the aggradation of distal reaches of the Odra River valley was locally marked. During the Late Vistulian and Holocene, erosive tendencies continued, which were reflected by the fact that the surfaces of subsequent inset alluvial fills were situated ever lower. In the light of dating results, it can be concluded that during the colder periods correlated with the Rederstall Stadial (MIS 5b) and with the Hasselo Stadial (MIS 3), a braided river was present in the river valleys examined, which was most probably accompanied by permafrost. During the Eemian Interglacial (MIS 5e), during the Late Vistulian Interstadials and in the Holocene, it was a meandering river.

It marks, at the species level, a prominent faunal turnover of ammonoids from the Prolobites delphinus Zone into the Platyclymenia annulata Zone. An analysis of ammonoid genera distribution, phylogenetic relationships, andmorphospace occupation demonstrates that the "annulata Event" does not correspond to a crisis of the group and does not fulfill the criteria of a major biotic event.
