Opis:
We have utilised techniques of remote sensing in combination with ground observations in order to investigate eskers of the Vormsi and Väinameri region of northwestern Estonia. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images were the basis for recognition and regional interpretation of esker systems, and kite aerial photography was employed for detailed, low-height views of selected eskers. A special Landsat TM composite was developed to enhance the display of shallow sea floor features. On this basis, we have extended known, land-based eskers across the sea floor, and we have identified additional probable eskers marked by shallow shoals and tiny islands. The known and suspected eskers of Vormsi and surroundings demonstrate a regular pattern in their distribution, which we suggest represents a subglacial drainage network that was anastomosing in character. The esker network is located along the central pathway of the Väinameri ice lobe, and the overall direction of drainage was toward the Palivere glacial limit. We interpret eskers of the Vormsi-Väinameri vicinity as evidence for substantial meltwater discharge beneath the Väinameri ice lobe, which terminated in a proglacial lake.

Opis:
To solve the question concerning the age and extent of the latest glaciation in northern Eurasia, several geological investigations were carried out. This paper describes work done on the North Taymyr ice-marginal complex on the Taymyr Peninsula in north central Siberia. The initial remote sensing work aimed to survey fieldwork localities and to acquire a regional geological overview. A Landsat 5 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) image was interpreted, both visually and by computer-based techniques. The ice-marginal zone is clearly visible on the satellite image and it was possible to distinguish spectrally different ground-types. In total, seven ground-types have been discerned and they are described and discussed. A geological interpretation of them was made after combining the initial results with the information gained from ground-truthing, which included sedimentological and morphological fieldwork. It is necessary to take topography and associations of classes into consideration when interpreting the final map, since the identification of some ground-types is not univocal.

Opis:
We describe a method of calculating one of the basic phenomena influenced by groundwater recharge, namely evapotranspiration (ET). The Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) algorithm was applied to calculate actual evapotranspiration (ETa), being modified to include spatiotemporal changes of substrate humidity and so referred to as mSSSEBop. Calculations were performed within the Szkwa and Rozoga River catchments (NE Poland). Quantitative ETa assessment was based on the analysis of Landsat satellite images, hydrometeorological and hydrogeological data. The results obtained for the original SSEBop algorithm and the modified mSSEBop one were compared with the water balance and data from a MOD16A2 dataset. The calculated water balance gave ETa values close to results using mSSEBop (with differences of 9-54 mm/year). In the case of the original algorithm, differences were in range of 42-218 mm/year. When compared with MOD16A2 data, the differences were within the range of -16.7 to 23.2 mm/8 days, with the mSSEBop algorithm giving on average lower ETa sums (~14%) than MOD16A2 while SSEBop gave results higher than MOD16A2 by ~12%. The studies performed indicate that the method presented, using satellite data, gives a reliable, spatial and temporal ETa assessment for the mid latitudes.
