New palynostratigraphical data concerning the Carboniferous sedimentary succession of SW Poland has been obtained from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole and the Brońsko boreholes on the northern slope of the Wolsztyn-Leszno High, where the oldest rocks were expected. The miospore assemblages recovered from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole allowed assignment of the interval studied to the Marsdenian (Namurian B) and Yeadonian (Namurian C). These results, supplemented with previous palynostratigraphical data, refute the existence of a stratigraphic gap between the early Namurian and Duckmantian (Westphalian B). The reinterpretation of the unpublished miospore results of Górecka et al. (2000b, 2001a) from the Carboniferous rocks from the Brońsko boreholes, also indicate that they should actually be assigned to the upper Marsdenian and Yeadonian. All analysed miospore assemblages are mixed and contain abundant reworked specimens. The results above complement previous opinions and permit a re-evaluation of the stratigraphy of the Carboniferous siliciclastic succession of SW Poland. Its sedimentation was certainly initiated in the earliest Namurian or earlier and probably lasted without long gaps until the Stephanian. The abundance and common occurence of reworked miospores indicate the age of rocks eroded during Carboniferous deposition. The lithological and palynofacial features of the late Namurian rocks from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole may be interpreted as a record of the shallowing of the sedimentary basin, including the possibility that some of the sedimentation occured in continental conditions. This means that the transition from the deep marine environment to shallow-water or even continental habitats likely had already taken place by the late Namurian. This suggestion, together with the tectonic deformation dated as post-Bolsovian, corresponds to the timing of the deposition and deformation in the German part of the Variscan Foreland Basin.

This paper describes in detail palynological data from the Carboniferous siliciclastic rock succession from the Siciny IG 1 and Marcinki IG 1 boreholes (SW Poland), that allow reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy. Two rock series of different ages were recognized. Rocks from the Siciny IG 1 section were assigned to the upper Arnsbergian–Alportian (the Lycospora subtriquetra–Kraeuselisporites ornatus (SO) Biozone) and the Bolsovian (the Torispora securis–Torispora laevigata (SL) Biozone). In the upper part of the Carboniferous section in the Marcinki IG 1 section the upper Arnsbergian–Alportian and Duckmantian interval (the Lycospora subtriquetra–Kraeuselisporites ornatus (SO) and the Microreticulatisporites nobilis–Florinites junior (NJ) biozones respectively) were recognized, although the quality of the palynological data from the latter borehole was generally poor. These results conflict with a Viséan age for these rocks interpreted from fossil marine macrofaunas and indicate the reworked nature of the macrofaunas. Possible means of the macrofaunal reworking, sedimentary environment and thermal history, based on the palynological data, are discussed. Repetition of the stratigraphical succession, probably due totectonic deformation of the rocks in both sections, is demonstrated and indicate a post-Bolsovian age for the deformation event.

Many coal seams of varied thickness and aerial extent occur in the Upper Silesia and Lublin basins within Mississippian and Pennsylvanian coal-bearing deposits. Well-documented data on coal quantity in the seams identified allows visualization of their variation within the stratigraphic succession and analysis of the time-dependent coal accumulation process. Some characteristic features of this variation were observed. Coal seams of the Mississippian age (Serpukhovian, Paralic Series), formed within a near-shore environment, most often constitute small resources. There were only two intervals of increased coal accumulation in seams of >100 million tons, in the lower and uppermost parts of the Paralic Series. Within the Pennsylvanian coal-bearing succession of terrestrial fluvio-lacustrine origin, a specific, wave-like pattern of seam resource variations and four intervals of increased coal accumulation are observed. In the Lublin Coal Basin, the Lublin Beds only, deposited during the Late Bashkirian, are coal-bearing, in which a bell-shaped pattern of seam resource variation in the stratigraphic succession is observed. The location of enhanced coal accumulation events in the stratigraphic succession suggests their repetition at ~1–4 My intervals. The characteristic features of the quantitative variation in these coal seams may be correlated with glacial-interglacial and climate humidity changes, and interpreted as a response to variable volcanogenic CO2 supply.

Five sections from the Kielce Region of the Holy Cross Mountains and one core from a borehole drilled in the nearby western Mesozoic Margin reveal the best recognized beds from the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary interval. In four sections: Ruda Strawczyńska, Bolechowice IG 1, Zaręby IG 2 and Kowala, the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary is located within a continuous series of deep-water carbonates, whereas in the two remaining: Ostrówka Quarry and the Jabłonna IG 1 borehole, the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary interval contains stratigraphic gaps resulting from lack of deposition in submarine conditions. The biostratigraphic position of the analyzed uppermost Devonian and lowermost Carboniferous beds is determined by assemblages of conodonts, microspores and deep-water ostracodes of the Thuringian ecotype. The lithology and biostratigraphic position of particular beds in the Devonian/Carboniferous boundary interval of the Kowala section from the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains resemble those in a succession of equivalent age from the Rhenish Massif. Both areas are characterized by similar lithological horizons and changes of biotic assemblages within the same conodont zones. Strata and fauna from the uppermost Famennian are influenced by the global regressive Hangenberg Event.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

This study estimates the reservoir properties of the Carboniferous deposits in the southeastern part of the Lublin Basin based on diagenetic and sequence stratigraphic patterns. Depositional sequences distinguished represent the following environments/processes: shallow clay and carbonate shelves, deltaic, fluvial, and hyperconcentrated flow while para-sequences (cyclothems), maximum regression-initial transgression surfaces (T), maximum flooding surfaces (MFS) and also lowstand (LST), transgressive (TST) and highstand (HST) systems tracts have been recognised. Sequences recognized may be linked to the global stratigraphic division of the Carboniferous, thus providing a time framework and environmental context for petrographic and petrophysical examinations. The reservoir properties were found to be clearly controlled by depositional environment, diagenetic history and burial. The best properties were recognized in sandstone lithosomes formed in braided, meandering and anastomosed fluvial channels and hyperconcentrated flows which fill the incised valleys and belong to the LST. They are characterized by good porosity reaching up to 15.1%. The TST and HST deposits are represented chiefly by claystones, mudstones and limestones that formed in a shallow shelf and deltaic environment, being sealing intervals. The diagenetic history of sandstones comprises eo-, meso- and telodiagenetic phases. The major processes acting during the first of these were mechanical compaction, dissolution of mineral grains, formation of predominantly quartz overgrowths around the quartz grains, and crysialiizaton of kaolinite. During mesodiagenesis, cementation with quartz, kaolinite and carbonates continued along with the formation of dickite and fibrous illite; moreover, mineral grains were dissolved and chemical compaction set in. The effects of telodiagenetic processes were feldspar dissolution and precipitation of kaolinite. During diagenesis the maximum temperature affecting the Carboniferous deposits was ~120°C. Compaction and cementation were the main factors responsible for the reduction of porosity by approximately 55 and 38%, respectively. One of the major diagenetic processes was dissolution resulting in the formation of secondary porosity. The Serpukhovian and Bashkirian sandstones from sequence 11 show good reservoir potential, while those from sequences 6, 9, 10, 12-14 only fair potential.

The dispersed miospore assemblage of the Retispora lepidophyta-Verrucosisporites nitidus (LN) Zone from the Holy Cross Mountains(Poland) is marked by enrichment (above 4%) in abnormal spore morphotypes during a terrestrial flora turnover close to the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary, recorded just above the Hangenberg Black Shale level. Incomplete and complete tetrads represent mostly Vallatisporites spp., supplemented by Grandispora, Retusotriletes and Apiculiretusispora. Additional peculiar morphotypes, marked byanomalous overall shape and ornamentation, are interpreted as mutated varieties of Vallatisporites based on intermediate morphologicalstages, connecting them with this well known genus. This relatively high aberrant palynomorph frequency is accompanied by volcanicash intercalations, as well as by charcoal debris and polycyclic aromatic biomarkers indicative of forest wildfire. Thus, the anomalousspore morphology could reflect the mutagenic effect of regional acidification due to explosive volcanism. However, palynological literature data from NW France and Canada highlight the possibility of a supra-regional mutated miospore signal near the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary, and there is need for high-resolution studies of the LN Zone to examine this. The end-Permian scenario of abnormalfloral growth in immensely stressed habitats may therefore apply to other potentially volcanically-induced biotic turnovers.

The paper provides new results of palynological studies of rocks from the Świebodzice Unit. An abundant Carboniferous miospores were found in rocks of the Pogorzała Formation from the southern part of this unit. These miospores occur in rocks containing also macrofloral and marine macrofaunal fossils, partly reworked, which were usually considered Upper Devonian. Two miospore sub-assemblages of different ages and colours have been distinguished. One of them consists of poorly preserved miospores, dark in colour, which indicate the Late Visean–Serpukhovian age of the rocks. The other sub-assemblage, found only in a few samples, consists of much lighter and well-preserved miospores of the Asturian age. Their presence is considered as a result of stratigraphical leakage. Observation of the miospore colour indicates that the thermal event occurred after the Late Devonian and before the Asturian and the palaeotemperature exceeded ~180°C. These new data indicate that the geological history of the Świebodzice Unit lasted longer and was much complex than it was previously considered.

The main aim of this study is to define precisely the age of the alkaline basalts occurring within the lowermost part of Carboniferous succession in the northeastern part of LublinBasin(drill core Parczew IG-7 and IG-9; SE Poland). The new, whole-rocks 40Ar/39Ar data constrain the age of volcanic activity and emplacement of alkaline basalts to the Late Tournaisian (348 ± 0.8 Ma) with possible prolongation to the Middle Visean (338.5 ± 0.7 Ma). The younger age is however of evidently poorer quality than the older one. The new data caused to correlate the volcanic processes occurring within the Lublin Basin with alkaline intrusions drilled inNE Poland inside the Paleozoic cover of the East European Platform. They also correspond to the volcanoclastic levels defined in different parts of the Trans European Suture Zone in Poland.

The Petřkovice Member is the basal unit of the paralic succession of the Ostrava Formation of the Upper Silesian Basin. This member is a valuable source of information about the transition from a marine basin filled with siliciclastic sediments into a paralic basin with the beginning of coal-bearing sedimentation. Models of: (1) the number of coal seams, (2) their total thickness, and (3) the coal content with respect to the total thickness of the succession were created to describe and assess the coal-bearing capacity of the Petřkovice Member. The authors present models for coal seam thicknesses exceeding either 10 or 40 cm. The coal-bearing capacity of the Petřkovice Member is very low. The average share of coal seams thicker than 0.1 m is 3%. The share of coal seams with a thickness that exceeds 0.4 m is only 1.66%. Moreover, in large areas of the basin, in the N and NE parts, the coal-bearing capacity is close to zero, because coal seams of greater thickness were detected only locally there. Based on these models and on other geological data, it is obvious that the onset of coal sedimentation was gradual and limited to particular sites showing the greatest subsidence of the basin floor. In places where minor subsidence took place, there were likely unfavorable conditions for accumulation of organic matter.

The only previous U-Pb zircon date for the the Early Carboniferous flysch sequence of the Moravo-Silesian Paleozoic Basin was published in 1987 from tuffogenic material from Kobylí Quarry at Krásné Loučky near the town of Krnov (Silesia, Czech Republic). The measured age of 319 Ma did not agree with its stratigraphic position, and was used as the basis for a hypothesized block of Late Carboniferous paralic molasse incorporated during a later tectonic event. During a survey of the still active quarry in 2010, volcaniclastic horizons were identified and sampled. Direct correspondence of the tuff units to those sampled in 1987 cannot be proved but is likely. High precision chemical abrasion - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) U-Pb dating of zircon from this new material has yielded an age of 340.05 ± 0.22 Ma, which correlates to the previously inferred stratigraphic age of the locality and the current calibration of the Early Carboniferous geologic time scale. The newly established age corresponds to the Visean stage and dates the boundary between the Horní Benešov and Moravice formations that can be correlated with other foredeep basins of the Culm in the European Variscides. A population of detrital Cambro-Ordovician zircons and a single 2.0 Ga old zircon crystal from the same volcaniclastic layer dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) are consistent with the known age of source material in the Variscan orogenic front.

Rhyodacite sheets (the Sady Górne Rhyodacites) in the lowermost part of the Permo-Carboniferous Intra-Sudetic Basin molasse fill have been mapped as intrusives but, later on, based on ambiguous field and petrographic evidence, reinterpreted as lower Carboniferous lavas and tuffs; if so, they would mark the earliest episode of late-orogenic volcanism in the Intra-Sudetic Basin and in the whole Sudetes region in SW Poland. However, re-examination of field relationships and new observations are consistent with an intrusive emplacement of the rhyodacites as conformable to semiconformable, simple to composite sheets. SHRIMP zircon study indicates that the rhyodacites contain rare inherited zircons of ca. 560 Ma, and ca. 470 Ma (or slightly older), and a main population of zircons with an average concordia age of 306.1 š2.8 Ma. This latter age documents the emplacement of the rhyodacites during a mid/late late Carboniferous (Westphalian) stage of volcanism in the Intra-Sudetic Basin in the Central European Variscides. This post-orogenic volcanism was possibly initiated several million years later than previously assumed, and could have comprised a few pulses over a relatively prolonged time span of millions of years.

Mercury geochemistry is emerging recently as a hot topic in chemostratigraphical and facies research, owing to the diagnostic character of Hg enrichments as a proxy of volcanic activity (crucial in the context of assumed causal links between volcanic cataclysms and mass extinctions). Thus, as a prerequisite to such far-reaching interpretations, reliable analytical determinations of Hg concentrations are necessary. In conventionally performed analyses in sedimentary geochemistry, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is usually applied, as an analytical standard for trace elements, including Hg. However, with a detection limit (DL) of 10 ppb, such measured values have been questioned as a conclusive geochemical indicator of Hg anomalies, and, instead, far more accurate techniques, such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS; DL = 0.2 ppb), are requested. As a preliminary test of this view, we present comparative analysis of 91 samples from three sections encompassing the key Frasnian-Famennian and Famennian-Tournaisian boundary intervals in Morocco (Lahmida), Germany (Kahlleite) and Uzbekistan (Novchomok), for which Hg concentrations were determined by both methods in the same samples. Despite some differences, especially at low Hg concentrations, both analytical methods reveal the same 12 extraordinarily enriched samples in excess of 1 ppm (with one exception, the determination error is <20%), as well as similar overall chemostratigraphic patterns characterized by a few prominent Hg spikes, with a top value of 5.8 ppm. The Hg concentrations determined by ICP-MS and AAS are significantly correlated, as high as r = 0.98 (Novchomok), even if the first method reveals a general tendency toward slightly heightened values (by ~15 to 30% for medians). Therefore, ICP-MS results can conclusively be used in mercury chemostratigraphy in order to recognize extraordinary volcanic (or other) signals, at least in the Devonian geological record. False Hg anomalies were not generated by these conventional ICP-MS determinations.

This paper reviews all available geological data on the Tajno Massif that intruded the Paleoproterozoic crystalline basement of NE Poland (Mazowsze Domain) north of the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, on the East European Craton. This massif (and the nearby Ełk and Pisz intrusions) occurs beneath a thick Mesozoic-Cenozoic sedimentary cover. It has first been recognized by geophysical (magnetic and gravity) investigations, then by drilling (12 boreholes down to 1800 m). The main rock types identified (clinopyroxenites, syenites, carbonatites cut by later multiphase volcanic/subvolcanic dykes) allow characterizing this massif as a differentiated ultramafic, alkaline and carbonatite complex, quite comparable to the numerous massifs of the Late Devonian Kola Province of NW Russia. Recent geochronological data (U-Pb on zircon from an albitite and Re-Os on pyrrhotite from a carbonatite) indicate that the massif was emplaced at ~348 Ma (Early Carboniferous). All the rocks, but more specifically the carbonatites, are enriched in Sr, Ba and LREE, like many carbonatites worldwide, but depleted in high field strength elements (Ti, Nb, Ta, Zr). The initial87Sr/86Sr (0.70370 to 0.70380) and ɛNd(t) (+3.3 to +0.7) isotopic compositions of carbonatites plot in the depleted quadrant of the Nd-Sr diagram, close to the “FOcal ZOne” deep mantle domain. The Pb isotopic data (206Pb/204Pb <18.50) do not point to an HIMU (high U/Pb) source. The ranges of C and O stable isotopic compositions of the carbonatites are quite large; some data plot in (or close to) the “Primary Igneous Carbonatite” box, while others extend to much higher, typically crustal ẟ18O and ẟ13C values.

Five lithologically different rock samples from the "Niwka" brickyard exposure, including one coal sample, were geochemically characterized as regards their mineral composition and sedimentary organic matter present in them. Various methods, including: X-ray diffraction, solvent extraction, group separation by preparative thin layer chromatography, infra-red spectroscopy for assessment of the content of different functional groups in total rock extracts and their separated polar compound fractions, and capillary gas chromatography for analysis of aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions. It was found that the "Niwka" brickyard rocks are rich in organic material present as the plant detritus (cane-break) or as compounds adsorbed on clay and carbonaceous minerals. Yields of bitumen extraction, group composition of extracts and content of various functional groups assessed by infra-red spectra seem to be related to mineral composition of the host rocks and type of kerogen present. Higher contents of clay minerals, especially chlorite, enriches both extracts and their polar compound fractions in aliphatic structures while the organic matter of both sandstones analysed contains more condensed aromatic structures and functional oxygen groups. Generally the organic matter of the host rocks was deposited in an oxic environment and belongs to type III kerogen with a dominant terrestrial biogenic source or to type II kerogen of bacterial/terrestrial origin of primary biogenic matter. Its thermal maturity stage can be estimated as end-diagenetic or early catagenetic. The highest maturity is shown by the organic matter in the basal sandstone (the S2 sandstone) and probably is caused by imput of older migrating bitumen. Biodegradation of organic matter seems to be influenced by the mineral composition of the host rock, with a high content of clay minerals giving protection.
