Opis:
The Wieliczka Salt Mine has been inscribed in 1978 on the first UNESCO list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage as a unique monument in the world scale. During more than 700 years of its operation, the inflow of outside water into the underground excavations constituted the biggest threat to the mine. Infiltration of water into the salt deposits can cause flooding of the mine and have a destructive influence on the state of the bedrock and the excavations through uncontrolled leaching of NaCl. The analysis of the geological structure and natural hydrogeological conditions in the area is one of many concerns in attempting to determine the water infiltration routes. Cluster analysis conducted for the different ions, and the correlations calculated, indicate that it is difficult to identify significant associations between the various ions other than the obvious and expected associations between, e.g., mineralisation of, Na and Cl, and Ca, Sr and SO4, Similarly, the spatial distribution of the different ions in the analysed effluents does not allow to determine groupings of several effluents with characteristic changes in the content of one or more ions. Furthermore, no regularities are revealed by sample graphs of ion associations. Such considerations motivated focusing the work on the interpretation of ion concentrations which depart from the average, based on the analysis of the origin and location of the effluents, the geological structure, the operation time span for each region, the presence and accessibility of old chambers and galleries, and also the occurrence of chamber subsidence which reach the surface. It is possible to identify water migration routes and interpret the chemical composition of mine effluents only through a comprehensive analysis of the causes of water phenomena encountered in the mine which has operated since the thirteenth century.

Opis:
Water inflow to a salt mine usually poses a threat to the mine and sometimes even to its existence. On the other hand the healing properties of salt have been known since Antiquity and brines extracted from the mines have been used in the treatment of various diseases. The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in southern Poland has been conducting organized rehabilitation and therapeutic activities for respiratory tract diseases for almost 200 years. This paper presents preliminary results of a study focused on pre-selection of out-of-deposit water inflows into the mine workings which show the lowest variability in yield and in chemical composition, and which can potentially be used in the health resort operated by the mine. The results indicate that brines from the WVII-16 leak are the only ones which can be taken into account when considering the use of Wieliczka brines for medicinal purposes for baths, rinses, irrigation, and at lower mineralisation levels, in liquid treatments

Opis:
Taxonomic, quantitative and isotopic study of foraminifera from mudstone and claystone xenoliths incorporated into slump facies of the Stratified Salt Member of the Wieliczka deposit shows that the majority of xenoliths represent the CPN 8 biozone (Wielician substage, Badenian, Middle Miocene). The share of the CPN 7 biozone is minor; it was recorded in two of 26 samples analysed. The source area of xenoliths was the basinal part of the Carpathian Foredeep, located far off the shoreline (shallow-water taxa are not present in the samples); it represents the upper bathyal zone, in oxygenated conditions. Inbenthic, eutrophic and opportunistic foraminifers dominate the benthic environment of the CPN 8 span of time. Increased d18O values of the Globigerina bulloides tests (from +1.7‰ in CPN 7 to +2.3‰ in CPN 8 sediments) was due to the change from the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum to the Middle Miocene Climate Transition at the CPN 7/CPN 8 boundary. This palaeoclimate event is the marker of the Moravian/Wielician chronostratigraphic boundary in the Central Paratethys. The Wielician shows the distinct taxonomic reduction of the Moravian planktonic foraminifera and includes the Globigerina bulloides Acme.

Opis:
The most abundant benthic foraminifers recorded in the Wielician salt-enclosed xenoliths are: Bulimina spp., Uvigerina spp., Valvulineria complanata, and Cibicides pseudoungerianus. The predominant taxon in the planktonic assemblage is Globigerina bulloides with a median 98.9% in biozone IIC and 89.1% in the later IID. The IIC assemblage differs from the IID one in both taxon composi tion and abundance. The most pronounced differences are those revealed by Valvulineria complanata counts, number of benfhic taxa and the plankfonic/benthic (P/B) rafio. Pseudotriplasia minuta (one of the Wielician index taxa) occurs only in the IID biozone, present in 16 among 28 samples. There is a noticeable difference in sur- face sculpture morphology pattern in the predominant Bulimina and Uvigerina taxa in the IIC versus the IID biozones. There are smooth (Bulimina elongata) and weakly striate (Uvigerina semiornata plexus) forms in the IIC biozone, foll owed by heavily costate (Bulimina striata) and spinose-pustu l ate (Uvigerina orbignyana plexus) forms in the IID. Globigerina druryi and G. decoraperta- the CPN 8 planktonic index taxa - had not been found in the material studied. Globigerinita uvula is un- usually common in the samples studied. The samples analysed display an abundance of Globigerina bulloides typical of the sub-evaporite Wielician. Hence the studied Wielician stratotype area supports the thesis of the Globigerina bulloides Acme as the valid name designation for the substage.
