Opis:
Significant lateral variations of surface heat flow occur in the Polish Lowland area, ranging up to 30+/–10 mW/m2 across the transition from the East European Craton (EEC) and the northeastern part of the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ) to the accreted terranes in the south-west (Palaeozoic Platform) and up to 25 mW/m2 of change within the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ). Modelling of the crustal temperatures for the deep seismic profiles parallel to TESZ (P1, P5 and TTZ) and perpendicular to it (LT-7, P2, LT-2, P4, LT-4 and LT-5) shows evidence of extensive crustal-mantle warming (elevated mantle heat flow in the area between the Sudetes and the EEC). The EEC and the northern part of the TTZ have a much lower mantle heat contribution. Mantle heat flow variations are significant (approximately 20–40 mW/m2). Significant are also variations in thermal lithosphere thickness ranging from ca. 150–200 km in the craton and the northern part of the TTZ to 100–150 km (locally less than 100 km) in the accreted terranes to the south-west of the TTZ and in the central part of the TTZ. The TTZ is a thermally inhomogeneous zone. The thermal transition between the Palaeozoic Platform and the EEC is not a sharp one. Significant variations in the thickness of the thermal lithosphere do not follow major tectonic units of the crust.

The Early Carboniferous age of the flysch succession in the Moravian-Silesian zone has been based principally on lithological correlations with the stratotype goniatite-bearing section. Its uppermost part-the Kyjovice Formation in the region of Toszek (Poland)-has been studied palynologically for the first time. Miospore assemblages of the upper part of the Western European nitidus-carnosus (NC) miospore Zone of the early Serpukhovian have been distinguished. This agrees well with a general stratigraphic range of the Kyjovice Formation within the Go-E1a goniatite zones.

Opis:
The Zadnie Kamienne shear zone is a high-angle Riedel type shear zone (R'), exhibiting an antithetic sense of displacement, which may have developed synchronously with the nappe-thrusting of the Giewont Unit (High-Tatric Nappe). The amount of displacement along this zone is very low and does not explain the very intense deformation, which is of the same character as that at the base of the Giewont Unit (mylonitization, stylolitization and vein forming). The explanation of this phenomenon lies in the multiple activity of this zone, the change of the direction of movement and the important role of pressure solution in hydrothermal conditions responsible for dissolution creep, mass loss and stress relaxation. This kind of shear can be referred to as a "ravenous" shear zone. Neo-forming minerals accompanying these processes were applied as a temperature gauge. Simultaneous growth of albite and adularia indicates a temperature of about 350 degrees C. Chlorites accompanying them occur in two thermal episodes, the first of which indicating a similar temperature (292-357 C).

The Paleoproterozoic Mid-Lithuanian Suture Zone represents one of the major structures of the crystalline basement of Lithuania, separati ng the West Lithuanian and the East Lithuanian domains. This zone has shown persistently low tectonic activity during the Phanerozoic. The Mid-Lithuanian Suture Zone is marked by a distinct Middle Lithuanian topographic low underlain by a trough in the sub-Quaternary surface that suggests the morphotectonic nature of this depression. This is supported by high-precision geodetic level l ing data that has unravelled the subsidence trend of the Middle Lithuanian trough. The zone is also distinct in its pattern of topographic lineaments. The persistence of the tectonic activity of the Mid-Lithuanian Suture Zone suggests that it represents a large-scale mechanical boundary of the Earth's crust, resulting in increased accumulation of tectonic strain.

Opis:
This contribution summarizes selected results of the “Palaeozoic Accretion of Poland” Project. Emphasis is placed on geochronological, geochemical and palaeomagnetic constraints on the Late Neoproterozoic to Early Palaeozoic development of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ). During the Late Neoproterozoic break-up of Rodinia, a major rift developed in the area of the future TESZ along which Baltica was separated from peri-Gondwana and Laurentia, resulting in opening of the Tornquist Ocean and development of the southwestern Baltica passive margin. This was paralleled by the development of the Cadomian orogenic system along the margin of Gondwana and the eastern and southern margins of Baltica. Some tectonic units involved in the TESZ, such as the Brunovistulian Terrane and the Małopolska Massif characterized by Cadomian basement, were derived fromthe internal and external parts of the Cadomian Orogen, presumably somewhere at the SE or SW corners of Baltica. Determination of areas where these terrains were originally located depends strongly on the Ediacaran plate model that is adopted for Baltica. The Małopolska Massif was reaccreted to Baltica, presumably due to latest Ediacaran strike-slip tectonics, during the late Middle to Late Cambrian, causing at that time an interruption of its passive margin subsidence pattern and minor erosion. During Late Ordovician to Silurian times, the Caledonian collision of Gondwana-derived East Avalonia Terrane with Baltica gave rise to the development of a foredeep basin along the southwestern margin of Baltica. The proximal part of this foredeep corresponds to the Pomeranian region to the Koszalin-Chojnice Zone, and its distal parts to the Baltic Basin, both of which developed on Baltica basement. During Ordovician and Silurian times clastics were shed into the Koszalin-Chojnice Zone and the Baltic Basin from the evolving Caledonian orogenic wedge, consisting of a subduction-related volcanic arc, obducted ophiolites and accretionary prism, as well as crustal units that were detached from basement of Baltica and Avalonia. The Brunovistulian Terrane was accreted to theMałopolskaMassif at the turn from the Silurian to the Devonian. Proximal terranes, such as the Pomerania and Łysogóry units remained after Late Neoproterozoic rifting in a position close to the relatively mobile SW margins of Baltica.

Within the channel zone of the Middle Vistula River, elevations of the Holocene alluvial basement occur, composed of deposits resistant to erosion. In this paper two kinds of such forms are discussed. Within the Małopolska gorge (an upstream part of the Middle Vistula, near Kępa Gostecka and Zakrzów), the elevations are composed mainly of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene rocks covered with clayey debris and residual lags. Below this, the elevations are built of Paleogene and Neogene soils as well as of various Pleistocene glacial deposits, and are of ten covered by residual lags. This type of valley stretch occurs in the vicinity of Dęblin. The surface of the erosion-resistant Holocene alluvial basement averages at 5-7 m below the mean water level. It is exposed on the channel bottom during high-water stages, as seen from a residual layer and from the low density of the contemporary channel deposits above them. The morphology of these elevations influences the pattern of the main stream also during mean-water stages. The trend to flood flow concentrations is also seen in the relief of the floodplain.

The Gresten Klippen Zone is an individual geological unit, mainly outcropping at the northern rim of the Northern Calcareous Alps. It is best exposed between the Enns Valley in the west and the Vienna Forest in the east. It contains a rock sequence ranging from Early Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, including sandstones, various limestones, breccias and radiolarites. The late Early Cretaceous–Paleogene is represented by the Buntmergel Formation. A sandstone block from the latter yields well-preserved planktonic foraminiferids which allow an assignment to the Early Eocene (E-7 Zone). The low density currents which deposited the parallel laminated sandstones originated in the lower shelf-middle slope.

Opis:
We provide an analysis of geophysical and geological data from the Baltic segment of the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ). The construction of structural and density maps of the Zechstein-Mesozoic-Cenozoic complex has allowed identification of anomalies of basement orgin. As a result of interpretation of these anomalies, major structural elements of the lithosphere have been characterised. According to gravity modelling the crustal structure is more complicated than shown on velocity model along refraction and wide-angle reflection profile LT-7. Long-wavelength anomalies have been modelled in terms of lateral heterogeneity within the lower crust and upper mantle. In order to achieve a match between the observed and calculated gravity effects, it was necessary to assume dense upper mantle beneath the TESZ. Gravity data also indicate the presence of high-density bodies in the upper crust, and a complex transitional zone between crust and upper mantle in the TESZ.

The Chah-Bazargan sub-volcanic mafic dykes (trachybasalt and basaltic trachyandesite) are located in the south of the Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SSZ), Iran. The dyke mineralogy mostly comprises amphibole, clinopyroxene, olivine, orthopyroxene, and plagioclase as phenocrysts and fine-grained plagioclase and some ferromagnesian minerals in the matrix. The rocks are alkaline and shoshonitic in composition. The mafic melts relate to Neotethys subduction activity beneath the southern SSZ in the ~Eocene–Miocene interval. Markedly positive Ba, U, K, Pb, and Sr and negative HFSE (high field strength elements: Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, P, and Ti) anomalies demonstrate this subduction. The sub-volcanic mafic dykes were produced from a metasomatized upper lithospheric mantle wedge at a depth consistent with the stability field of phlogopite-spinel (or -spinel/garnet) lherzolite. Geochemical studies on the basis of the rare earth elements (REE) and HFSE, and large ion lithophile elements (LILE) display that the mantle wedge underwent degrees of partial melting averaging between 5 and 15% to form the Chah-Bazargan sub-volcanic mafic dykes. It is possible that the chemical composition of the rocks was changed due to fractional crystallization and crustal contamination during emplacement.

It is composed of considerably deformed - very low grade - metasediments, namely shales, siltstones and rare fine sandstones. In this work we present new sedimentological and biostratigraphical data that suggest the Albergaria-a-Velha Unit was deposited from the (?)early Frasnian to the Serpukhovian in a distal marine environment, where turbiditic and basinal sedimentation prevailed. Palynofacies analysis and lithological data point to a gradual increase of terrestrial input, suggesting a prograding system. Detrital framework data is indicative of a stable cratonic sediment source area composed of low grade metamorphic rocks. The timing of the onset of the Porto-Tomar shear zone activity and consequently its influence on the sedimentation of this unit is discussed. Organic petrology and geochemistry data indicate that the Albergaria-a-Velha Unit is within the dry gas window in terms of hydrocarbon generation ranges.

Opis:
This paper presents the geomicrobiological analysis of acid water reservoirs and Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) developed in the weathering zone of pyrite-bearing schists near the closed-down pyrite mine in Wieściszowice (south-western Poland). The analysis was focused on two reservoirs characterized by different physical and chemical properties (pH, redox potential, content of sulphates and heavy metals). The study is the first thorough report on the geomicrobiological relationships taking place in the AMD setting in Wieściszowice and enables a description of the microbiological processes that significantly influence biogeochemical cycles of sulfur and iron in the analyzed water reservoirs. The reservoir water also harbors numerous big, organized microbial structures in the form of streamers. Samples of these structures were studied in detail using optical and electron microscopy, as well as microbiological cultivation and molecular methods. According to the obtained results, the slime streamers from the Wieściszowice mine are characterized by the co-occurrence of typical chemolithoautotrophic microorganisms oxidizing sulphur and iron together with sulphate reducing bacteria. The presence of these structures probably depends on the occurrence of iron (II) in the surrounding environment.

Opis:
The largest reserves of the Earth's mineral resources are located on the ocean floor. Amongst these, hydrocarbon and metallic resources are of the greatest importance. In 2010, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) adopted rules for documenting new metal resources contained with polymetallic sea-floor massive sulphides (SMS). Russia and China were the first countries to apply to the ISA to acquire the right to commence initial investigation and documentation in the Indian and Atlantic oceans. Apart from copper, cobalt and nickel, modern SMS ores contain inferred significant amounts of gold, silver and PGE. The results described here from Galápagos Rift samples indicate a high concentration of gold (up to 7.24 ppm) and platinum (up to 350 ppb), which are mainly concentrated in low temperature parts of the sulphide mounds. The high content of Au and Pt revealed by this study provides further motivation towards attempting the exploration of marine massive sulphides. This is particularly important in the light of the high prices of metal commodities, and especially the unprecedented price of gold. This paper is the first such detailed scientific account in the Polish scientific literature focusing on the genesis and economic significance of the modern sea-floor sulphides.

Opis:
Foraminifera, ammonites, and calcareous dinoflagellates were used for stratigraphy and, together with microfacies, for the assessment of the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the Upper Jurassic deposits in the central Alborz Zone of northern Iran. The Lar Formation (Lar Fm.) in the Polur section is of latest Oxfordian to early Kimmeridgian age. The ammonite Subnebrodites planula and the calcareous dinoflagellate Colomisphaera nagyi have been introduced as new biomarkers of the lower Kimmeridgian in the central Neo-Tethys. The distribution of calcareous dinoflagellates reflects possible dispersal routes along a narrow seaway between the western Neo-Tethys and the Alborz Zone in the central Neo-Tethys. The Terebella-Crescentiella associations of the Lar Fm. represent a low-energy setting under dysoxic conditions in the Central Neo-Tethys Ocean. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this formation show a high dominance of infaunal taxa and r-selected strategists. This assemblage is reminiscent of eutrophic conditions and low oxygen levels in the lower part of the Lar Fm. Good preservation of the hexactinellid sponges in the upper part of the Lar Fm. also indicates an oxygen-minimum zone. Three third-order depositional sequences can be distinguished in the study area based on six microfacies. Depositional sequence 1 (DS1) is composed mainly of argillaceous limestone and medium- to thick-bedded limestone, corresponding to an outer ramp-to-middle ramp environment. Depositional sequence 2 (DS2) comprises breccia limestone and thick-bedded limestone facies in its lower part and thin-bedded limestone to massive limestone in its upper part. The breccia limestone facies may be associated with subaerial exposure and reworking of previously deposited sediment during a relative sea level fall. The thin-bedded limestone to massive limestone of DS2 consists mainly of bioclastic mudstone to wackestone (outer ramp). These represent an deep-water outer homoclinal ramp facies. Depositional sequence 3 (DS3) consists mainly of massive limestone to thick-bedded limestone with a bioclastic peloidal microbial Crescentiella packstone (middle ramp). The relative stratigraphic positions of DSs1–3 and sequence boundaries in the uppermost Oxfordian to lower Kimmeridgian of the Polur area show a fair match to the upper Oxfordian to lower Kimmeridgian sequences (JOx7, JOx8, JKi1 and JKi2) on the global sea level curve.

Integrated tectonic interpretation of seismic data and core samples from boreholes in the vicinity of the Kock Fault Zone (KFZ) allowed us to identify several tectonic deformation events that were responsible for creating its complex structure. The KFZ is an example of a mechanically weak regional-scale tectonic structure that accumulated deformation over hundreds of millions of years and therefore is a good indicator of stress regime changes in a broader area. The KFZ is here regarded as a combination and superposition of two genetically and temporally different faults: the older Kock Fault, which is an inverted normal fault, and the younger, low-angle Kock Thrust. The first, Silurian stage of KFZ evolution occurred in a tensional stress regime that gave rise to the activation of a deeply rooted normal-slip precursor to the Kock Fault. Subsequently, this fault underwent inversion during the Late Famennian compressive/transpressive event. In the Early Carboniferous, the tectonic stress regime changed into tension/transtension, leading to extrusion of basalt magma and abundant mineralisation in the vicinity of the inverted Kock Fault, followed by tectonically relaxed sedimentation of Carboniferous strata. The deposition was terminated by a compressional event at the end of the Westphalian. Contraction resulted in the formation of the low-angle Kock Thrust decoupled in Silurian shale that cut across the upper part of the Kock Fault and displaced it towards the NE, over the East European Craton foreland.

New U-Pb zircon SHRIMP determinations from magmatic silicic rocks adjacent to the NE part of the Upper Silesia Coal Basin (USB) are provided and compared with earlier data obtained by K-Ar dating. The zircon samples studied came from the same boreholes and depth intervals previously sampled for K-Ar datings. Recalculations of the earlier K-Ar values for biotites yielded isochron ages in the range of 297-309 Ma. The zircon U-Pb SHRIMP values gave more precise ages between 300.1 ±1.2 Ma and 292.6 ±1.3 Ma (1б) consistent with U-Pb and Re-Os determinations. In two cases, the recalculated results of K-Ar dates were nearly identical with those obtained from the SHRIMP isotopic analyses. In this context, the granitoids and porphyries of the USB area, once assigned to the Carboniferous-Permian based on the older K-Ar studies, actually are of the same age as other felsic igneous rocks from the vicinity of the Kraków-Lubliniec Fault Zone, with a higher dating precision, however. The new data underline the importance of Late Carboniferous-Early Permian felsic magmatism at the SW margin of the Trans-European Suture Zone in southern Poland. In the zircon populations dated, besides the dominant Late Paleozoic ages, there are some inherited zircon cores, likely remnant detrital grains from a sediment component in the source rocks, that reveal much older ages which range from ~2051 to 569 Ma.
