Opis:
The paper presents the results of swell index, swelling pressure and soil suction tests carried out on Neogene clays from Warsaw, depending on the water content, clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite. These clays are considered expansive soils in Poland, as they are vulnerable to water content variations in the active zone, which result in their volume change and, in consequence, cause damage of foundations and other construction elements. A number of physical, chemical and mineral properties were determined for these clays. The swelling tests were carried out on samples precompacted in Proctor apparatus, at various initial values of water content. The analyses have shown exponential relation of swell index, swelling pressure and suction versus water content. In addition, the investigated relationship between the suction and swell characteristics of tested clays shows good correlation as a power function between these parameters. In addition, validity of correlations between fitting parameters of obtained relationships and soil index properties, such as clay fraction, liquid limit, plasticity index, cation exchange capacity, and content of clay minerals and beidellite, have been demonstrated. The empirical relations are characterized by high values of the correlation coefficient. A very high fit has also been found for a proposed relationship between the swell index and swelling pressure for tested clays.

Opis:
This report presents an assessment of chemical variability in forest ecosystems of three selected national parks in Poland, i.e. Magurski National Park, Świętokrzyski National Park (Holy CrossMts.) andWigierski National Park derived from the calculation of geochemical baselines using a "barbell" cluster and ANOVA design. In addition, results of summary statistics for elemental concentrations and pH in the soil horizons-O (Ol + Ofh), -A and -B (or -E), 1 and 2 year old Pinus sylvestris needles, pine bark and Hypogymnia physodes thalli are given. The variability of elements in soils and plant bioindicators of Wigierski National Park is primarily governed by underlying glacial sediments and to a lesser extent by anthropogenic factors; the two remaining parks reveal a more distinct anthropogenic imprint. The most interesting of all the parks examined is Wigierski National Park because this area has experienced low levels of air pollution compared to other parts of Poland.

Opis:
In this study, concentrations of As, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were determined in 231 samples of mine soils and spoils by field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF), and by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as a comparison method. The use of both spectrometric methods allows for comparison of the total and aqua regia-extractable contents of elements. The study areas encompassed three historic metal-ore mining sites and one abandoned mine tailings site in the Holy Cross Mountains, in south-central Poland. Sample collection in these areas, which are characterized by various bedrock mineralogy and lithology and different anthropogenic impacts, enabled us to test the FPXRF performance for a wide range of element concentrations. The results of FPXRF and ICP-MS determinations were found to be significantly correlated with the highest r2 (coefficient of determination) value of 0.987–0.991 for Pb, irrespective of the soil mineralogy, bedrock lithology or concentration levels of this element. Overall, the FPXRF showed excellent performance in determining selected trace elements in contaminated soils.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to establish a correlation between the liquid limit value obtained in the Casagrande apparatus (wL/cup) and in the cone penetrometer (wL/cone) for typical glacial sediments from west-central Poland and compare them with the correlation equations published in the literature. The following correlation was formulated: wL/cone = 0.91wL/cup+ 1.98. The analysis presented in this paper proves that deriving a generalized and universal relationship wL/cup/wL/cone for all cohesive soils, regardless of their origin, is very challenging and may not be reliable for use in the engineering practice. It is verified that, in the range of low values of liquid limit, the cone penetrometer gives higher values of wL than those obtained from the Casagrande apparatus. However, for the Polish postglacial soils analysed in this paper, the cone penetrometer underestimates the results in relation to the Casagrande apparatus above wL = 22%. For the purpose of this study, wL = 22% was defined as “the point of equivalent results” (wL/cone = wL/cup).

Opis:
Volume magnetic susceptibility of soils and alluvial sediments from the eastern Pomeranian region near Gdańsk was investigated. Full set of geochemical analyses had been previously performed for all the samples studied. The results are presented in the form of the susceptibility maps of the topsoil horizon, the subsoil at the depth between 40 and 60 cm and the alluvial sediments. Additionally the differential susceptibility map between topsoil horizon and the subsoil at the depth 40-60 cm has been also constructed. A close correlation is observed between positive anomalies of differential susceptibility and urban areas. This is interpreted as surface anthropogenic pollution. Magnetic susceptibility values higher than 1200 x 10-6 SI units, observed in topsoil horizon, might reflect high contents of such elements as Ba, Co, Mg, Mn and Ni.
