Opis:
Malacological analysis was used to reconstruct Holocene environmental changes from profiles of calcareous tufa and fluvial deposits exposed in the Kobylanka stream valley, several kilometres west of Kraków in southern Poland. The abundant and diversified mollusc fauna was characterized by clear variability within the vertical succession where five types of molluscan assemblages were distinguished. The pattern of sedimentary and molluscan facies allowed characterization of two main intervals of environmental change during Holocene. In the lower interval, until the end of the Middle Holocene, human activity was not detected and environmental processes were controlled by natural factors. In the upper interval, corresponding to the Late Holocene, human impact can be seen, in the form of rapid deforestation and agricultural development. Anthropogenic impact has been particularly evident during the last millennium. The mollusc assemblages studied allowed accurate reconstruction of natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the natural environment.

Indicators of topographic relief change are proposed for environmental monitoring, and environmental impact assessment (EIA). Changes in relief pattern reflect human impact on the land surface due to small- and large-scale development projects. Landform diversity, relief resilience and impact-response approaches allowing measurement of changes in relief pattern are described. These approaches are based on a number of integrated environmental indices that may be used together or separately to assess anthropogenic alteration of landscape elements. Several examples their practical use are given in the paper. Other possible applications of geoindicator measures for different EIA techniques are briefly described.

The δ13C of atmospheric CO2 from discrete air samples collected at the University campus, Parma, Italy, was measured at time intervals of about five days over a period of 18 months. Some day and night samples were measured along with three daily time series to evaluate the daily variations of δ13C values and CO2 concentrations. The following patterns were revealed: (1) the least negative δ13C values show a seasonal evolution with slightly more negativevalues during winter and less negative values during summer. Home heating systems probably contribute to this behaviour; (2) four samples collected in down town Parma show more negative values than those collected at the same time at the University campus, probably be cause of car engine pollution; (3) occasionally, quite negative δ13C values were obtained at the campus. The expansion of polluted air masses from down town to the suburban area may be responsible for these negative events; (4) one sample showed a δ13C of -17.67‰. The nearby fields had been extensively manured and the contribution from organic matter fermentation may explain the exceptionally negative result; (5) the diurnal changes in δ13C are relatively low from January to May; (6) in July and September the major daily changes take place in the late evening and in the early morning and are very fast. During the night the CO2 concentration in creases by no more than some 50-60%, this behaviour differing from observations by other authors in different areas; (7) the set of daily samples collected in August shows a different behaviour, clearly related to the heavy rain that lasted for several hours during the night.

Opis:
The influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the distribution of sand grain size along sandy beaches is assessed, based on study of three spits of the southeastern Baltic Sea: the Curonian, Vistula and the Hel. 330 sand samples were collected from the beach and foredune at 1 km intervals. Our findings show that although the three spits have some characteristics in common, e.g. a predominance of fine- and medium-grained marine sand on their beaches and foredunes, the grain size distribution patterns of the recent sediments along these spits differ significantly. The key factors determining the grain size distribution include the dominant hydrometeorological regime, anthropogenic activity and geological framework. Trends in the mean grain size differentiation along the Vistula and Curonian spits directly correlate with the direction of the longshore sediment transport: as the distance from sources of the longshore sediment transport increases, the size of sand particles, both on the beach and the foredune, decreases. By contrast, on the Hel Spit, this pattern is disturbed in areas of hydrotechnical construction and artificial beach nourishment. Sand differentiation along the beach can also be predetermined by the geological framework, particularly in lithologically anomalous sections, such as the Juodkrantè settlement on the Curonian Spit.

This assessment of the environmental degradation by toxic chemical elements within the Upper Silesian Industrial Agglomeration of Poland encompasses the impact of mining for base metals and coal and non-ferrous metalurgy, as well as the discharge of industrial and municipal sewage causing strong degradation of the natural environment in the area over the years. The content of the following elements: Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, V and Zn has been assessed both in the topsoil (0.0-0.3 m) and the subsoil (0.8-1.0 m) of the study area. Concentrations of the elements in the <2 mm soil fraction were analysed using the ICP-OES method after Aqua regia extraction. The soil contamination was assessed based on the enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo). The tests revealed elevated contents of several metals, arsenic and sulphur, exceeding the regional geochemical background levels. Unusually high concentrations of the following elements: As (up to 5,300 mg/kg), Cd (up to 388.8 mg/kg), Cr (up to 1,638 mg/kg), Cu (up to 13,230 mg/kg), Hg (up to 23.44 mg/kg), Mo (up to 93.7 mg/kg), Pb (up to 54,940 mg/kg), Sn (up to 701 mg/kg) and Zn (up to 88,120 mg/kg) were recorded. The highest concentrations of these elements were found in the proximity of smelters and residential areas. The spatial distribution of metals is shown as interpolated data on maps and compared with the locations of mining and industrial sites.

Opis:
This paper demonstrates the evaluation of in trinsic vulnerability of karst-fissured waters in an Upper Jurassic aquifer by applying modified DRASTIC method. The area investigated is the Jura Krakowska (South Poland) - an area of upland merokarst (or relictkarst), where the Upper Jurassic aquifer is mainly unconfined. The method applied is a combination of a simulation model of the ground water aquifer (factors: netre charge, hydraulic conductivity, ground wa ter flow velocity in the aquifer) and a geographical in formation system - GIS model (depth of ground water table, lithology of vadosezone, thickness of Upper Jurassic aquifer), and additionally a soil factor was taken into account. In the area of the Jura Krakowska, 5 classes of intrinsic vulnerability to pollution were distinguished according to the values of vulnerability factors. These classes range from extremely high to low vulnerability (IP 200-50). Based on the synthetic map of vulnerability it emerges that high vulnerability indices cover 54% of the area studied while medium and low vulnerability indices cover 46% of this area. The modified DRASTIC method presented seems to be a useful tool to evaluate the intrinsic vulnerability of karst-fis sured aquifers of "Torcal" type with a scattered system of recharge and discharge, and a thick vadosezone of variable permeability. This is consistent with the method developed with European programme COST ACTION 620. All rating methods recommended for karst have limitations, there fore the method applied is constantly updated. Many of them are particularly use ful for areas of bare karst, mountain systems of "Aliou" type and in ar eas of complete karst develop ment (holokarst).

We have analysed the mineralogical and oxygen isotope composition of solid inorganic atmospheric particles (SIAP) in Wrocław (SW Poland) to determine potential natural and anthropogenic sources of deposited dust. The mineralogical compositions of SIAP and local soils are very similar and quite typical. Dust sources were attributed to high emission sources (two large coal-fired power generation plants, i.e., "Wrocław and "Czechnica") and low emission sources (mostly small furnaces for home heating). A mullite phase was confirmed in the non-magnetic fraction of high emission dust. The δ18181818

Opis:
This paper presents the results of rare earth element (REE) determinations in the Nowiny wastewater treatment plant (NWWTP) effluents and Nida River system waters of the southeastern Kielce Region (south-central Poland). Of the REE examined, gadolinium and europium turned out to be very useful for pinpointing anthropogenic and geogenic sources. Anthropogenic gadolinium (Gdanth), used as a contrasting agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is released from the NWWTP into the river drainage system. This micropollutant is traced downstream over the distance of about 15 km. This river stretch is characterized by a strong positive NASC-normalized Gdanth anomaly with the GdNASC/GdNASC* ratio above 1.1 (1.80–15.57) and the Gdanth input varying from 44 to 94%. Two additional positive Gdanth anomalies recorded in the rivers Bobrza and Nida point out to mixing of effluents derived from the NWWTP and other local wastewater treatment plants. In contrast, the Gdanth-uncontaminated waters upstream, or downstream far away from the NWWTP display a distinct positive NASC-normalized Eu anomaly highlighted by a high Eu/Eu* ratio in the range of 2.87 to 29.70. The lack of Gdanth anomaly upstream from the NWWTP also indicates that there is no leakage of municipal sewage from the sanitary collector sewer into the Silnica River. Thus Gd as a contaminant may be effectively used as a tracer in similar pollution studies because it is relatively simple and cost-effective to discriminate between contaminant concentrations and normal background concentrations.

Opis:
The Zoloushka Cave, with passages >90 km long and a volume of ~0.65 million m3, is among the largest gypsum caves in the world. The cave was opened in the course of gypsum excavation in a quarry in the village of Criva (Moldova) located just near the border with Ukraine. During the quarry exploitation, with the accompanying pumping of water, the groundwater table was lowered to the bottom part of the gypsum layer. As a result of the pumping, the karst aquifer within the cave labyrinth was fragmented into separate underground reservoirs controlled by the morphology of the karst system and its content of clay deposits. Currently, there are several dozen lakes in the cave with a varied hydrodynamic regime (relict lakes, lakes with direct and indirect hydraulic connection with the aquifer). Research was carried out in February 2020 to determine the degree of, and reasons for, the hydrogeochemical diversity of 10 selected lakes of various hydrodynamic types present in the cave. The degree of variability of the hydrogeochemical parameters of these lakes was found to depend on a number of factors, mainly: the hydrodynamic type of the cave lake resulting from the degree of its hydraulic connection with the aquifer; the geochemical environment of the lake; and anthropogenic influence. The autonomizing role of these factors is the modification (within individual lakes) of the hydrogeochemical context of the transit waters flowing through the cave system to the quarry.

Fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has been investigated in the Warta River(western Poland), based on data obtained for the period 1961-1980 from three gauge stations located in upstream, middle-stream and downstream areas. Over the two decades, the SSC values demonstrated wide fluctuations and an overall increase at each gauge station. No significant correlation was generally observed between SSC and discharge but high SSC was found to follow low discharge and increasing temperature during the summer seasons in some years. Measurements of SSC and discharge were used to estimate total annual suspended sediment load (SSL). SSL values were found to increase downstream along with an increase in discharge. SSC decreases along the river course. However, when it comes to changes over time, SSL variability was mainly determined by SSC changes. The maximum SSC values were primary caused by anthropogenic factors: the disposal of mine wastewater upstream, river training works, increased urbanisation and the intensification of sewage disposal. Where the river catchment has been greatly affected by anthropogenic factors, a denudation index calculated solely based on SSC and discharge does not appear to reflect the actual denudation rate, and must be treated with caution.

Opis:
The lakes of the Powidzki Landscape Park (Gniezno Lakeland) are known for their natural and recreational values. The majority of them are located within two large glacial tunnel valleys, that in many places cut through several levels of till and inter-till aquifers. Regional hydraulic linkage systems are developed where surface water and groundwater remain in direct contact. Smaller water bodies occur between the lakes, in other tunnel valleys, in isolated meltwater basins, or in river valleys. These water bodies constitute local drainage bases. The existence in the area of such morphologically diverse lakes with different flow rates, varied morphology, and heterogeneous geological structure permitted tracing of the hydrodynamic dependencies of lake catchments of various types. Hydrogeological cross-sections, comparative analyses of structural maps for successive aquifers, bathymetric plans of lakes, and piezometric contour maps were prepared. Surface and groundwater level fluctuations were investigated, as well as their response to changing atmospheric conditions. Water balances of lakes were also determined for selected lake catchments. The study showed that all the lakes analysed are closely related to groundwater, and that the deepest ones reach lower aquifers. The majority of the lakes drain the aquifers, but some of the lakes feed them. Such a situation was documented in coastal wetlands and in the eastern part of the Park, affected by a depression cone associated with a nearby lignite opencast mine. The study showed that the deepest of the lakes analysed have a very wide catchment area of groundwater recharge, expanding beyond the boundaries of their surface catchment areas. This is important for the development of their resources, especially in periods of hydrogeological low flow.

An overview of long-term, sysiematic observations of trace gas composition of the atmosphere over southern Poland is given. Three major greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) and selected halocarbons (freons F-11, F-12 and F-113; chloroform; 1,1,1-trichloroetane; carbon tetrachloride; sulphur hexafluoride and trifluoromethyl sulphur pentafuoride) were monitored. Measurements were performed at two locations of contrasting characteristics: (1) the high-mountain site Kasprowy Wierch, High Tatras, representing atmospheric conditions relatively free of local influences, and (2) two sites located in the Kraków agglomeration, representing a typical urban atmosphere. The data available for Kraków and Kasprowy Wierch were compared with the Mace Head data, representing a marine regional background. The impact of continental sources for some of the measured gases is clearly seen in the Kraków and Kasprowy Wierch records. The mean offset between CH4 concentrations recorded at Kasprowy Wierch and at Mace Head for the period 1998-2012 is 20.7 ppb and stems from continental emissions of this gas originating mainly from anthropogenic activities (leaks of natural gas distribution networks, landfills, livestock). For N2O, a similar offset of ca. 1 ppb for the period 2009-2012 was observed. Although the long-term concentration trends of selected halogenated compounds measured in Kraków coincide in general with the respective trends in Mace Head data, the Kraków records contain numerous spikes and periods of enhanced concentrations, reflecting the impact of local sources of these compounds. The impact of a legislative framework enforced in Poland in July 2002, regulating the trade, storage and disposal of ozone-depleting substances, is visible in the Kraków record of halogenated compounds.
