    Opis:
    Since about twenty years the poverty of urban population in West Africa is growing. This impoverishment is due to the draconian limitation of public expenses and persistent economic crisis. Based on the documents of DIAL (Development, Institutions and Globalization) Centre in Paris the paper demands for the causes of this situation. First, the author presents the actual situation of deficiency of food and rapid increase of prices. In that circumstances the middle-class employees (teachers, health and public agents, etc.) are enable to support their families. Main cause of this situation are the consequences of structural adjustment, i.e. the limitation of public help, reduction in salaries, mass dismissals, the devaluation of Franc CFA and the rapid increase of population. In response to constantly aggravating situation the people take second job, borrow money, and cultivate crops and vegetables. The growth of earning activities of women is one of issues of insufficiency of men's salaries. After all, facing the crisis inhabitants of African towns prove a lot of creativity and initiative.

    Only few Polish people, working in Africa in colonial period, passed to the history. The name of one of them is only known, because his son made a successful political career. The article, divided into three parties, presents first, the economical and social context in the town of origin of Nicolas Grunitzky at his birth in 1913; second, the political career of Grunitzky as a leader of Togolese Party of Progress and his work as Prime Minister of Autonomous Republic, and third, the short time of Togolese history when Grunitzky was the President of the Republic. Nicolas Grunitzky was very honest and intelligent person, but as a politician, making his politics dependent to the ancient colonial power, has been defeated.

    Adherents of traditional religions use two ways of relating to space; one is a cosmic dimension and the other is in the living area dimension. Generally speaking the first type of relationship puts in order the vastness of the cosmos through sacralization of celestial bodies and natural phenomena, whereas the latter demarcates on living spaces "intimacy circles", which vary in the intensity of their sacredness. Using the Konkomba People of North Togo, as an example, the author presents various ways these people relate to space in their daily lives. By analyzing the farmsteads of the Konkomba from the perspective of the sacred places, where sacrifices are per- formed, the author delineates izosacral lines in the form of circles with a dwelling-huta in the centre. The intensity of sacredness in terms of living space coincidently corresponds with the location where life is being created, and this in fact is an appropriate room for marital sexual relations. Inside the hut, various stages in the rites of passage as well as rituals aimed at overcoming afflictions of individuals are performed. The front of the hut and graves are used as natural spots for sacrificial offerings to their ancestors. The crossroads mark the border line of what is domesticated and under their control as living space. This crossroads become the meeting places where the Konkomba People encounter the unknown and uncontrollable elements coming from the bush. Both cosmic and living spaces are coupled in an earth cult. For what would a woman's fertility mean without fertile soil, which sustains life and guaranties prosperity?

    Creolisation is a root metaphor for the process of creative reinterpretation of the central culture in the culture of the periphery. The article analyses three examples of cultural creolisation in contemporary Togo. Firstly, the ritual of the flag, introduced in the colonial time, remains important public ceremony connected with traditional forms of politeness. Secondly, the „cultural animation", being an official practice of the political propaganda through ca. 20 years, implanted the North-Korean model of political religion on the ground of African predisposition to rhythm and dance. Third example is focused on the feast of the new yams celebrated in Bassar Region. This traditional agricultural and family feast was recuperated by the authorities. Nowadays it becomes a vast political event. The official discourse links the protection of family spirits and the providential politics of the State as source of prosperity and welfare.

    The article examines the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa on the overall security in African countries, especially in the southern regions of the continent. In the first part, the author discusses the prevalence of the disease in the army and African peace keeping forces, which necessarily weakens their military prowess. The second part is focused on the negative effects of the disease on the economic development and security of various countries. The closing part of the article presents debilitating impact of the disease on women and children, especially in urban settings. The author concludes that the sheer scale of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa must be taken into account in any macro-economic and political analyses of the situations of the countries affected by it.

    Opis:
    The social space generated for the political power is functional as the place of government and official residence of governing people. It is also symbolic because it expresses the prestige of power and the accepted ideology. The official buildings are the appropriated means to deploy the image of power. The paper presents some official buildings in Lomé, capital of Togo, and analyses their symbolic signification. As first example, it is the Governor Palace, huge, nice building constructed at the beginning of 20th century, used were changed their significance over time. As a second example service buildings constructed at the Place of Independence around the Monument of Independence. The author argues the recent history expressed through official buildings shows that it is difficult to construct the imagery of hopeful future in Togo because there are no clear and solid „lieux de memoire" that can serve as roots.
