Opis:
Arion vulgaris is one of the most important slug pests of crop plants, and is extremely hard to control. We assessed the effectiveness of a slug pellets containing iron phosphate, compared with methiocarb- and metaldehyde-based molluscicides, and of the parasitic nematode P. hermaphrodita contained in the commercial bioproduct Nemaslug. The effect of various doses of these substances and the nematode in reducing slug damage to Chinese cabbage plants was evaluated in laboratory experiments. A reduction in slug numbers and plant damage was obtained following application of the molluscicides, and a reduction in plant damage following application of P. hermaphrodita (immersion of plant roots in the nematode-containing liquid). The results are of great practical significance, because they show that it is possible to reduce the recommended dose of iron phosphate (5 g/m2) by one half. Another important finding is that application of the nematode in the form of root immersion is more effective than spraying. The study demonstrates the usefulness of the nematode and of the iron phosphate molluscicide in protecting plants from A. vulgaris; this is of particular importance for crops on which the application of traditional molluscicides is not possible.

Opis:
The distribution of Arion lusitanicus Mabille and the damage caused by the slug were studied In 1993–2009. A total of 38 sites were examined, characterised in terms of location, time of appearance and density of the slug, type and size of crops affected, and degree of damage to plants. At the start of the 1990s A. lusitanicus occurred only around Rzeszów and in the Sub-Carpathian region. In 1997 it started to appear in other regions of Poland. The rate of its spread was found to have increased significantly, particularly in the past few years. The slug mainly colonises urban areas (30 sites), and much less often – other areas (8 sites). The slug densities were the greatest in cultivations. The degree of damage done by the slug varied among plant species. Brassicas, lettuce, beetroot, carrots, beans, strawberries, numerous ornamental flower plants and some weeds were the most damaged. The increase in the spread of A. lusitanicus poses a serious threat to the biodiversity of native habitats and to garden-cultivated plants.

Opis:
Winter rape is susceptible to damage caused by D. reticulatum (O. F. Müller) mainly in the early phases of the plants’ development. The degree of damage and the size of yield losses depend on the slug population and the grazing activity, which are governed by many environmental factors. Laboratory studies were performed to analyse the rate and amount of damage to rape plants (2–3 leaf stage) caused by D. reticulatum, and the effect of temperature and soil humidity on the slug’s grazing activity. With increasing air temperature (up to 16°C) the amount of damage increased, but the effect was not lasting. The slugs were also active at low temperatures (+1°C), and although their grazing was less intense, the amount of damage after seven days could reach an average of 34%. In laboratory tests, the soil humidity had no marked effect on the amount of damage done by the slugs.
