Opis:
The article describes the concept of the hedge, diversifier and safe haven investments. The main goal of this study is to examine whether there are links between the rates of return achieved on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) and rates of return on investments in gold. The author tested following hypothesis: the return on investment in gold acts as a hedge investment in the long term in relation to investments in the WSE main index, and at a time when investment in the WSE main index recorded a negative rate of return, investment in gold is a safe haven investment. To verify the hypothesis the author uses correlation coefficients and his own measure. The main conclusion from the research is that investing in gold acts as a safe haven investment for the investor which invests on the WSE.

Opis:
By adopting the perspective of a US equity investor, in this study we empirically verify the diversification benefits resulting from investing in commodities. We make an assessment for specified commodity groups using the commodity sector indices. In the employed methodology we focus only on the risk characteristic of the analyzed portfolios. Our results indicate that the diversification potential of different commodity groups is highly cross-varying, however, at any time greater than the risk-reduction possibilities offered by Emerging Markets equities.

Opis:
Nowadays the perception of culture only through the prism of autotelic values and noticing ”more useful values” in it is not the only one. As a result of this process culture is seen as a “lever” of social development in a variety dimensions − from building of competence through the creation of local ties and support of personal identity formation, to the creation of social cohesion. At the same time cultural institutions often struggle with limited financial resources necessary to fulfill the role for which they have been established. The purpose of this article is to present the possibilities of cultural institutions financing in the context of the limitations on sources of funding statutory activities by broadening their product range. Literature research and statistical data confirm the progressive process of decentralization of cultural institutions funding. Governments and local governments still remain the largest support of culture in comparison with other sectors. Still, all three spheres − the government, the market and the non-profit sphere − operate simultaneously and their penetration is rather the rule than the exception. To encourage the market and the third sphere to finance cultural projects, cultural institutions should extend the range of products by less standard (classical) product adapted to the wider audience. The presented project is an example of using the sources of financing tasks performed by cultural institutions not connected with the activities they have been established for. Cultural institutions are facing funding limitations and yet have the resources which enable the unusual activity using attractive means of expression for the customer. Owing to these measures, these institutions can deliver social (including educational and integrational) content in a very interesting way.

Opis:
This paper discusses the possibility of usage of discriminant models in basic analysis. At first, the issue of basic analysis is shown as a tool which enables shares’ investment risk diversification. In this area the significance of enterprise financial analysis and importance of financial ratios were emphasized. Next the significance of discriminant models in the assessment of enterprise bankruptcy prediction was stressed. Particular attention was put on studying the opportunity of its usage in the area of financial analysis. In that case the examination of financial conditions of quoted enterprises belonging to metal processing industry using discriminant models and financial ratios was made. The study used data from the Official Journal of the Republic of Poland “Monitor Polski B”.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the problem of the accurate estimation of the diversification effect in the process of determining Solvency Capital Requirements (SCRs) in Solvency II. First, the method of determining SCRs in Solvency II is briefly characterised, the role of dependences for the correct specification of the diversification effect is presented, and a diversification ratio is defined. This is followed by an analysis of the use of this ratio of the diversification effect sensitivity to the dependence structure based on an example of life and health underwriting risk. The cases of lacking knowledge, partial knowledge (of a correlation coefficient only) and full knowledge are considered (it has been assumed that variables are independent and comonotonic). Dependence structures are modelled using copulas. The article shows that without identifying the actual dependence structure, the application of the standard formula in accordance with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/35 may lead to the incorrect estimation of the diversification effect, and it indicates (based on a simulation analysis) the size of possible errors.

Opis:
The article identified determinants of the corporate investment diversification in Poland, ie. in investment property or intangible assets and their dependence on corporate savings. The analysis was conducted on unbalanced panel data of individual companies employing at least 10 workers contained in the annual reports of Central Statistical Office (F-02) from the years 1995-2012. The parameters used to estimate the system GMM [Generalised Methods of Moments]. Also included is a robust variance-covariance matrix. The obtained results allow to conclude that the increase in liquid reserves (savings) increases the investment diversification spending (in real estate and intangible assets). A positive correlation was obtained in diversified investments of the real effective exchange rate based on CPI and growth opportunities. This may be due to the anti-inflationary role of investment in real estate, as well as the improvement of the situation of exporters of services (investing in intangible assets), granting licenses to foreign companies on their own technology or software due to the appreciation of the exchange rate.

Opis:
This study examines 16 country selection strategies based on inter-market value, size, momentum, quality and volatility effects. We investigate a sample of 78 countries for the period 1999-2014. Having considered country-specific dividend tax rates, market liquidity and openness for investment flows we can state that chosen strategy based on earnings to price ratio proves useful for investors. Momentum strategies should be approached with caution, as they appear effective only in small markets and may lead to loses in large markets. Selecting low leveraged and illiquid countries also proves beneficial. The relation between volatility displays different characteristics for open and closed economies.
