Opis:
Introduction. The incidence of head and neck cancers in Poland demonstrated a general tendency to stabilize in the last two decades. However, a global phenomenon in the change of morbidity structure in terms of the specific anatomical location is observed, which will probably increasingly apply also to Poland. Aim. The aim of the study was to present the changes that have occurred in the structure of the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer in comparison to laryngeal cancer in the period from 1980 to 2013, in the region of south-eastern Poland and the whole country. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of the incidence due to the head and neck organ cancer in 1980-2013 in the region of south-eastern Poland and the whole country was performed based on demographic data from the Provincial Statistical Office in Rzeszow and Podkarpackie Cancer Register as well as the Department of Epidemiology, Oncology Centre in Warsaw. Results and conclusion. In the last three decades, the percentage of laryngeal cancer incidence in women (13% vs 18%) as well as oropharyngeal cancer (18.2 % vs 21.6%) was lower in Podkarpacie than in Poland overall. The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer in men in Podkarpacie was lower in the analyzed period than in Poland overall, and only in the last 3 years of observation has it reached a value close to the average for the country. The incidence of laryngeal cancer in men showed a dramatic downward trend both in Poland and in the Podkarpacie province, whereby both in terms of incidence rates and standardized rates and percentages – it is far more pronounced in the analyzed province.

Introduction. According to statistics, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in Poland. Progress in treatment and diagnosis gives an opportunity of a quick diagnosis, but women are reluctant to undergo prophylaxis screening. Aim. To identify women’s attitudes about breast cancer prophylaxis. Material and methods. The diagnostic survey was conducted in a group of 200 women. The research tool was the questionnaire developed by the authors. Results. Knowledge about breast cancer and prophylaxis was on an average level. Nearly half of the women surveyed (45.5%) declared that they do not ask for a breast examination while visiting a gynecologist. Only 26.8% of the surveyed women were systematically subjected to preventive examinations for breast cancer, while 18.7% of them performed breast self-examination. Every fifth respondent used invitation for a free mammogram. Conclusion. The women’s knowledge about breast cancer is average, but it does not translate into their attitudes towards the prevention of this cancer. Most women niether perform breast self-examination nor benefit from free prophylaxis programs. Younger respondents most often use the Internet. Education and place of residence do not affect the participation of women in preventive examinations for breast cancer.

Opis:
Introduction. Estrogen receptors (ER) are members of nuclear receptors that act in the ER signaling pathway regulating the pathophysiology of hormone-responsive target cells including breast tissue. Aim. This detailled review literature was written on the pathophysiology of ER signaling as well as the effect altered ERα and associated pathway derangement in the oncogenesis of breast cancer. Material and methods. This review was performed according to systematic literature search of three major bibliographic databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Cochran). Analysis of the literature. In this pathway, estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is a key estradiol-17β (E2) induced transcription factor that has been implicated in the initiation and development of the major fraction of breast cancers. Hence understanding the ERα-mediated ER signaling that results in alterations from normal phenotypic features of breast tissue to the oncogenic features of breast cancer is important. The oncogenic effect of ERα in ER signaling is driven by combinations of molecular assets within the cancer cells. Normally, the transcriptional activity of ERα is controlled by tight regulation of its protein level inside the cells. Altered stability and activity of ERα due to its phosphorylation, ubiquitination, glycosylation, sumoylation, and acetylation events can trigger oncogenic ER signaling. Conclusion. The function and activity of ERα is also modulated by its interaction with coregulators as well as crosstalk with oncogenic factors from other oncogenic pathways. These all events increase the complexity of the progression of ER+ breast cancer and its response to endocrine therapy

Introduction. Cancer, after cardiovascular disease, is the second most common cause of death both in Poland and Europe, so it is important to investigate and search for dietary components with anti-cancer properties. Components which can modulate different stages of carcinogenesis through epigenetic process are called bioactive food components. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate nutritional habits of patients diagnosed with cancer in terms of level of bioactive food components consumption. Material and methods. A group of 123 patients diagnosed with cancer were enrolled the study. The study was conducted by means of an anonymous questionnaire on diet history prepared by the authors. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software, statistical significance was adopted at the level of p < 0.05. Results. Based on the results of the questionnaires, major risk factors that increase the prevalence of cancer disease were age (above 55 years) and increased BMI (the score indicated overweight or obesity). Additionally, it was observed that cancer diagnosis resulted in change of eating habits in approx. 61.8% of the participants. Enrolled patients mostly consumed inadequate amounts of green vegetables, legumes, green tea and whole grains before the diagnosis. Moreover, patients with breast and colorectal cancer were found to be more likely to consume more red meat in comparison to others. – Both non-modifiable factors: age and modifiable ones: body weight and lifestyle influence morbidity. – Most participants ate incorrectly before cancer diagnosis; diagnosis of the disease changed their eating habits.

Opis:
Introduction. Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the Western world. Annually there are approximately 1.8 million new cases worldwide. It is characterized by poor prognosis with a 5-year survival of 10-17% depending on the country. Contributing to this poor prognosis is a mainly late diagnosis, as well as a fairly frequent recurrence despite radical surgery. Over the years, scientists have been searching for a tumor marker that would be useful for patients with lung cancer. Aim. The aim of this study is to discuss the significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the diagnosis, prognosis of the disease course, and monitoring patients with lung cancer. Methods. Review of the literature using the PubMed database, Termedia, Via Medica and the key issue: carcinoembryonic antigen as a tumor marker in lung cancer. Conclusions. Serum CEA level can be a reliable complement to the diagnosis of lung cancer. It can be helpful in preoperative prediction of disease course and qualification for adjuvant treatment of non-small cell lung cancer especially adenocarcinoma. Trends and normalization of CEA during chemotherapy have an impact on progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) of patients. Various available publications describe CEA as a marker for metastatic lung cancer, which is the most specific for metastasis in the liver and brain.

Introduction and aim. There is a gap in nursing student understanding, knowledge, and preventive behaviors concerning esophageal cancer. This study aimed to investigate knowledge, risk factors, and preventive behaviors among Turkish nursing students. Material and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was performed. The questionnaire was conducted online over a four-month period. A convenience sample of 688 undergraduate nursing students was recruited from health science faculty at three universities in Türkiye. The survey was performed using a self-administered questionnaire. The reliability coefficients of the knowledge test were calculated, yielding Cronbach’s alpha (0.952), KR-20 (0.952), and KR-21 (0.945), respectively. A significance level p<0.05 was accepted. Results. The mean age of the study group was 20±1.86 (min: 17, max: 32). The study group consists of 487 women (70.8%) and 201 men (29.2%). Most of the study population report never using alcohol and smoking (88.4%, 73.1%, respectively), and reported paying attention to oral hygiene (88.5%). Nursing students had a low family history of EC (0.4%), obesity (10.2%), and vitamin deficiency (19.2%) which are risk factors. Knowledge of esophageal cancer risks was low (x̄=14.34±9.53; Min=0; Max=31). Total knowledge scores have higher for students with complaints of EC, vitamin deficiency, and diagnosis of Human Papilloma Virus disease (p<0.05). Conclusion. This study showed that there are significant gaps in the knowledge of nursing students and these need to be addressed through an improved nursing curriculum. In this context, the study can be used as important evidence and a resource in the issues that should be given priority to in the training and research needed to increase the knowledge and awareness of future nurses about esophageal cancer.

This review was performed according to systematic literature search of three major bibliographic databases. Results. Available data suggest that incidence and mortality in high-resource countries has been declining whereas incidence and mortality in low-resource countries has been increasing. Conclusion. The role of a physician is to select the most suitable one for each patient in order to obtain the best result. No matter the method however, between 2005 and 2011, the 5-year relative survival was found to be 89%. This is thought to be due to both the increase in utilization of population-wide screening, as well as advances in treatment.

Introduction. The dramatic decline in the incidence of lip cancer, which until the 80s of the twentieth century was the cause of significant morbidity, is an example of changes in the structure and trends of cancer incidence both in Poland and in the regions. Aim. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in the morbidity trend of the lip cancer during the last 50 years, both in Poland and in Podkarpacie. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of the lip cancer morbidity in the Podkarpackie region and in Poland in the years 1963–2013 was carried out based on data from the literature and our own research. Results and conclusion. A steady decline in the incidence of lip cancer in Podkarpacie has been observed since 1982 for men and 1983 for women. In Poland these trends have been observed since 1972 for men and 1993 for women. In the analyzed period significant changes in the incidence structure in terms of sex are observed – from approximately 1:10 (women / men) in 1963 similarly in Podkarpackie and Poland – to 1:4.6 in Podkarpacie and 1: 2.6 in Poland in 2013.
