Opis:
Investigations have been presented on the type, extent and frequency of operational and maintenance as well as structural linear and spot defects that occurred in long operated vitrified clay sewers, which are the most often used in sanitary sewer systems. The causes of the defects have been deter-mined and summarized in five groups. Two sewer failure probability matrices taking into account the impact of all the defects analysed in terms of environmental and structural hazards have been proposed. Numerical values determined for each element of the two matrices allow allocating the sewers into five probability of failure categories. The proposed method contains the consequences of failure of matrix of sewer, and finally two matrices of risk for environmental and structural safety. The elaborated method enables prioritization of sewers in terms of environmental and structural hazards from those of the highest to those of the lower risk, which allows efficient sewer failure management and may be used for planning the sewer trenchless maintenance and rehabilitation.

Opis:
Various additives, including cement, quicklime, fly ash, montmorillonite, sepiolite and their proportions were employed to stabilize/solidify artificially prepared soils contaminated simultaneously with two kinds of ions such as Cd2+ and Pb2+. The unconfined compressive strength of the stabilized soils was measured to estimate the possibility of recycling. The efficiency of Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in contaminated soils was also evaluated using the US EPA TCLP toxicity test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the immobilization of heavy metals. The experimental results demonstrate that in terms of soils simultaneously polluted with Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions, the curing effect of fly ash is better than that of montmorillonite and sepiolite. When Cd2+ and Pb2+ coexist in soil specimens, the curing is more difficult than for Cd2+ or Pb2+ alone, which is antagonistic mechanism. Also, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ gradually decreases upon increasing pH when pH < 8. For pH ≥ 8, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ reached a minimum. Besides, the results of XRD and SEM are in agreement with those of the strength and leaching tests.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of diesel oil on the activity of oxidoreductases in loamy sand, and to evaluate effect of selenium addition in the restoration of homeostasis of soil contaminated with diesel oil. The experiment was carried out under laboratory conditions with loamy sand. 0.05 mmol/kg of selenium (Se(IV) or Se(VI)), and diesel oil in the doses of 2, 10 and 50 g/kg were added to the soil samples. In soil treated with selenium and diesel oil activities of dehydrogenases, catalase, o-diphenol oxidase and nitrate reductase were measured on 1, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 112 day of the experiment. Contamination with diesel oil did not cause significant changes only in the activity of o-diphenol oxidase. The highest increase was observed in activity of dehydrogenases. Selenium limited hydrocarbons impact on activity of soil oxidoreductases, especially in loamy sand with diesel oil in the dose of 10 g/kg. Obtained results showed that this effect was reduced after treatment with selenium in both oxidation states but for nitrate reductase and catalase this reduction was reported after application of Se(VI) and Se(IV), respectively.

The study has been made to determine the effect of soil contamination with a new generation herbicide on the abundance and diversity of microorganisms, activity of soil enzymes and their tolerance to the herbicide Successor T 550 SE. Herbicide disturbed the biological balance of soil as expressed by the numbers and diversity of microorganisms and enzymatic activity. The recommended dose of herbicide significantly stimulated the growth of total oligotrophic and organotrophic bacteria as well as actinomycetes, depressed the activity of fungi and had no effect on oligotrophic sporulating bacteria and Azotobacter.

Opis:
The influence of Yarrowia lipolytica inoculum on biodegradation of hydrocarbons, and changes in microbiota composition in the soil contaminated with petroleum have been investigated. The material under study was contaminated clay soil, containing petroleum-derived substances at approximately 17 000 [mg/kg d. m.]. Microbiological analysis was carried out by the cultivation method and the content of individual hydrocarbons (n-aliphatic, BTEX and PAHs) was determined by the GC/MS method. The largest decrease of oil-derived substances, versus the control sample, was recorded at the beginning of the process. During the first 30 days, the yeast inoculation caused most effectively removal of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons and PAHs (approximately 80% reduction), however, the content of BTEX increased nearly three times. After 60 days of the process, PAHs concentration further decreased (by 40%), concentration of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons decreased a little, however the content of BTEX increased by 10%, compared to the initial concentration. Stimulating the biodegradation process with the yeast inoculum influenced the increase of the bacteria count, mainly Gram-positive, with simultaneous decrease of fungi number.

Effect of soil contamination with diesel oil on the growth of two plant species – faba bean (Vicia faba ssp. minor) and rape (Brassica napus var. napus) was assessed. It was demonstrated that the presence of diesel oil initially reduced the number of germinating seeds and then limited their development. Negative effect of the contamination was visible also in relation to the length of the roots and above-ground plant parts. The plants stimulated the process of degradation of diesel oil, however, it occurred only in the initial incubation period.

Opis:
Suitability of various substrates for anaerobic biodegradation of DDT in contaminated soil was tested in lab-scale tests with granular sludge inoculation. Use of carbohydrate-based substances such as starch, sucrose, molasses and whey resulted in acidification, which in extreme cases inhibited DDT removal. A large amount of phosphate buffer prevented pH drop for starch, but not for sucrose. Better results were obtained with calcium carbonate as a buffering agent, which also had little effect on soil salinity. Very good effectiveness of biodegradation was achieved using sodium lactate which, however, caused alkalinisation of the soil, perhaps due to accumulation of sodium carbonate. Alkalinisation did not occur when calcium lactate was used instead. Experiments also demonstrated that Tween 80 surfactant could be successfully used as a substrate, without experiencing problems with pH control.

Opis:
The research was performed to evaluate usability of stabilization/ solidification (S/S) processes in permanent separation of the surface of soil contaminated with xylene in order to reduce its emission to the environment. For the needs of the experiment, soil samples were prepared with the same amounts of solvent and then, after averaging their physicochemical composition, stabilized with Portland cement CEM II 32,5 R. In the course of stabilization/solidification process, all emitted gaseous contaminants were monitored. The effect of a binder dose on xylene emission was evaluated based on the momentary concentrations (C8H10) monitored above the surface of reactive mixture using a flame-ionization detector. Simultaneously, contaminated air was run through pipes filled with activated carbon. Then, based on chromatographic analysis of xylene vapors adsorbed on activated carbon, the measured momentary concentrations were verified.

The study deals with the removal of residual contaminants Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from soil using surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, and Triton x-100. Surfactants were used with and without chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). SDS (10 mM) was the most effective surfactant for removing metals. Replacing distilled water with SDS enhanced metal removal by the factor of 5.5, 28.8, and 29.1 for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II), respectively. SDS with EDTA was efficient in removing metals. Interaction of metal ions with respect to adsorption and desorption were also studied.

Opis:
A laboratory experiment lasting for 90 days was conducted to examine the interaction between a remediation plant, Gossypium hirsutum, and the petroleum contaminated soil. Root indices and 9 various types of soil enzymatic activities in two separate groups were determined. Results showed that compared to the uncontaminated control, the growth of cotton roots was slightly strengthened at the pollution level of 1000 mg-kg-1, while seriously inhibited at the pollution level of 2000 mg-kg-1 and 4000 mg-kg-1. At the same pollution level, all studied soil enzymatic activities except alkaline phosphatase were markedly higher in the group with plants than in the group without plants which may indicate that the content of nutrients essential for plant growth as well as the activities of microorganisms capable of degrading contaminants were both enhanced in soils planted with cotton, therefore conducive to the increase of the overall fertility level and the degradation of pollutants in the petroleum contaminated soil.

Opis:
The presented work aimed at evaluating a fertilizing mixture of sewage sludge, brown coal and brown coal ash enriched with potassium mineral fertilizer on mobility of heavy metals. The effects of fertilization were compared with the effects obtained from fertilization with: sewage sludge, mixture of sewage sludge and mineral fertilizer, mixture of brown coal and mineral fertilizers and mineral fertilizers. Soil was slightly contaminated with zinc and cadmium (II°) and showed elevated concentration of lead (I°). The uptake of heavy metals by plants depended on the concentration of bioavailable metal forms determined with 0.01 M CaCl2 and 1 M HC1. Fertilization with the mixture of sewage sludge, brown coal, brown coal ash enriched with potassium mineral fertilizer resulted in the reduction in the concentrations of zinc by 30-38%, cadmium by 28-34% and lead by 11-50% in plant biomass compared to soil with no fertilization.
