Opis:
Parameters characterizing the dewatering process of sewage sludge in small wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been analyzed. Two municipal wastewater treatment plants of comparable capacity and similar technology of sewage treatment were selected to the analysis. Comparison of dewaterability of unprepared and conditioned sludge was made. During preliminary tests, the capillary suction time (CST) of sludge conditioned with cationic polyelectrolyte was determined. Next, for the optimal doses of selected polyelectrolyte, more detailed technological experiments were conducted such as vacuum filtration and susceptibility to the gravitational thickening. Tested sludge had very low susceptibility to thickening. The final volume of unprepared tested samples after 2 hour thickening was 977.0 cm3, while the initial volume of thickened sludge was 1000 cm3.The lowest value of final hydration for conditioned sludge was 64.0%.

Opis:
Two yeast strains already identified as Pichia kudriavzevii AM-4 and Candida sp. PSM-33 were able to resist Cr(VI) up to 400 and 350 mg/dm3, respectively. The stability and optimum temperature of chromate reductase in both yeast strains was maximal at 30 °C. Candida sp. PSM-33 showed the higher chromate reductase activity at pH 5 whereas P. kudriavzevii AM-4 exhibited maximum activity at pH 7. Both chromate reductases (ChRs) activities were enhanced in the presence of Mg, Na, Co, and Ca but strongly inhibited by Hg cations. The total cell Cr(VI) uptake capabilities were 15–68 mg/g in Candida sp. PSM-33 and 17–73 mg/g in P. kudriavzevii AM-4 within 2–12 days of growth. It was found that 23–94% of Cr(VI) reduction was achieved by P. kudriavzevii AM-4 while Candida sp. PSM-33 showed 21–88% reduction at a concentration of 100 mg/dm3. Proteins extracted from P. kudriavzevii AM-4 and Candida sp. PSM-33 followed by one-dimensional electrophoresis revealed enriched bands of low molecular-weight metallothioneins (MTs) suggesting some differential proteins could be expressed under Cr(VI) treatment. Both yeast strains can be used to ameliorate the wastewater contaminated with toxic metal ions.

A complex activated sludge model implemented in BioWin software has been implemented to assure its predictability and improve the effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment in the full-scale plant in Poland. The influence of temperature and sludge retention time (SRT) on the quality of the effluent was also studied. The calibration was successfully performed according to the Good Modelling Practice Unified (GMP) protocol. Five parameters at a steady state and ten under dynamic conditions were calibrated. It occurred that in the studied wastewater treatment plant SRT should be kept at the low level sufficient to sustain nitrification.

Opis:
During the last 30 years the increase of interest in low-cost decentralized and small wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is observed in Europe. For this purpose, sand filters, stabilization ponds, mini reactors with activated sludge, trickling filters and treatment wetlands are used. Among the listed facilities, treatment wetlands (TWs) offer effective and reliable treatment efficiency, being at the same time low-cost and simple in operation. This is a sustainable treatment technology which does not generate secondary sewage sludge. In the paper, design concept and performance of nine TWs constructed in 2009 for single-family households in Kashubian Lake District is discussed. The treatment efficiency of three different TW configurations is compared. The findings of the study provide a basis for future design and implementation of TWs in agricultural areas.

Opis:
Denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (DPAOs) play an important role in simultane-ous removal denitrifying nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Their enrichment and characteristics were investigated. A denitrifying EBPR reactor, performing continuous anaerobic/anoxic conditions, was used to enrich DPAOs in this study. Through 60 days operation, DPAOs was successfully cultivated in the denitrifying EBPR system and P concentration in the effluent was stable and low with less than 0.5 mg/dm3. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that P content in anoxic end sludge gradually increased with enrichment operation, which accounted for 2.9, 4.7, 6.2, and 7.9 wt. % in sludge samples at day 0 (i.e., seed sludge), and days 20, 40 and 60, respectively. Based on the batch test, a significant positive correlation was found between COD consumption and P release in anaerobic conditions and between nitrogen removal and phosphorus uptake in anoxic conditions. Furthermore, in anaerobic conditions, the P release rate was 4.2 mg P/(g MLSSh) being higher than the P uptake rate (2.8 mg P/(g MLSS h)) in anoxic conditions. Despite this, total anaerobic P release (8.5 mg P/(g MLSS)) was lower than anoxic P uptake total amount (11.2 mg P/(g MLSS)), implying an excess P uptake in anoxic environment. One whole cycle displayed the obviously denitrifying simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal with more than 95% removal efficiencies in the denitrifying EBPR system.

Opis:
Intensive striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farming has recently expanded owing to its economic benefits but it has led to severe aquatic pollution. In this study, a batch surface-constructed wetland system cultivated with Hymenachne acutigluma grass was designed to treat wastewater collected from catfish ponds. The planted wetland system showed effective operation, as 81.7% of NO-3-N, 63.6% of NH+4-N, and 77.5% of PO3-4-P (w/w) in the wastewater were removed over four months. Besides, the wetland significantly decreased the chemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids from the wastewater. The absorption by the grass resulted in the removal of 20.3 and 22.2% of the total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from wastewater, respectively. The determination of the nutrient mass balance in the planted system showed that phosphorus in the wastewater was mainly removed through sediment deposition, while a large amount of nitrogen was not lost because of the sediment deposition and plant uptake. Moreover, H. acutigluma cultured in the system can serve as food for cattle. This study shows an ecofriendly approach for the effective remediation of wastewater obtained from the farming of intensive striped catfish.

The advanced oxidation process with Fenton’s reagent can be used in industrial wastewater treatment, especially for the degradation of not easily biodegradable contaminations. Chemical oxidation of industrial wastewater or other substances as a pre-treatment before biological purification is the most effective method of wastewater treatment. However the Fenton process requires low pH of wastewater and final neutralization with a big amount of iron-containing precipitate. Thes paper presents laboratory experiments dealing with the treatment of adhesive wastewater in an sequencing batch reactor following the Fenton process without final neutralization.

Opis:
This study aimed to perform a qualitative and a quantitative assessment of the prevalence of genes encoding resistance to beta-lactam, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol antibiotics in samples of DNA isolated from air in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a municipal waste management plant (WMP). Air samples were collected in the mechanical (MP) and biological (BP) processing units of WWTP and WMP in winter and spring. The samples of air were collected by impingement into PBS solution and subsequently, DNA was isolated. The prevalence of the 16S rRNA gene and ARGs was determined by PCR, and the most abundant ARGs were quantified by qPCR. The highest diversity of the analyzed ARGs was noted in air samples collected in the mechanical processing units of the WWTP (winter) and the WMP (spring). The copy of ARGs varied between treatment units and seasons. ARGs were most abundant in air samples collected in spring in the MP units of both the WWTP and the WMP. The study demonstrated that ARGs are ubiquitous in the air in both WWTPs and WMPs. The presence of ARGs in the air can exert a negative impact on the health of plant employees.

Opis:
Microalgae wastewater treatment technology has not only the function of wastewater treatment but also biomass production, resource recovery, and biological carbon fixation with significant economic and environmental benefits. Good sedimentation of microalgae cells is the key to realize wastewater treatment and microalgae cell proliferation. In this study, short settling time in sequence batch reactors (SBRs) was utilizable as an environmental selection pressure to promote the auto-flocculation of Chlorella vulgaris treating synthetic domestic wastewater. After 60 days of operation, bacteria-microalgae consortia formed in the reactors, improving the settling efficiencies. Microalgae cultivation reactor with 30 min settling time had the largest flocs size and highest settling efficiency. Bacteria-microalgae granular sludge had a relatively high content of P, Fe, Mg, and Ca elements that both bacteria and microalgae coexisted and adhered to each other. The dominant bacteria distribution of bacteria-microalgae granular sludge was like that of aerobic granular sludge, which implied bacteria played a vital role in Chlorella vulgaris auto-flocculation. Lastly, the mechanism of Chlorella vulgaris auto-flocculation in wastewater treatment was interpreted.

Opis:
The environmental impact over natural water systems, both marine and land, of the sewage is minimized with the treatment at Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), but these facilities also generate environmental impacts during the construction period and during the operation period. A review of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process of WWTPs in Spain through the analysis of records of decision (RODs) between 2000 and 2016 has been performed in this work. The major environmental impacts during the construction period are noise, land use and disturbance of the air and water’s quality. During the operation period, the major environmental impacts are noise, odors from the depuration process and the visual impact of the facilities. About the EIA process, results show the processing time is too long, scoping phase has a success rate about 57.2% and regional public administrations are the most participative, both at scoping phase and at public participation phase. In general, public participation during period of exhibition is very low, in twelve of the RODs nobody submitted any report. The role of environmental project manager and the work environmental journal must be strengthened.

Opis:
Internal recycle (IR) ratio is an important operation parameter for the anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2O) wastewater treatment process. Three laboratory-scale A2O wastewater treatment processes with IR ratios 100%, 200%, and 300% were set up to study its influence on the denitrification process and nirS gene-containing bacteria. Results showed theremoval rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +-N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) increased at different levels as the IR rate augmented from 100% to 300%. NirS gene numbers were increased from 1.8×108 to 3.2×108 copies/g MLSS, which was positively correlated with the denitrification rate in anoxic areas. Moreover, similarities were observed in the community structures of denitrifying bacteria that contained the nirS gene under different operation modes. These results indicated that increasing the IR rate in the A2O treatment process could benefit nirS gene-containing bacteria and improve denitrification ability observably while maintaining the stability of the community structure of the system.

The possibilities of treated wastewater (TWW) reuse for irrigation purposes in the Northern Jordan Valley have been described. As shown by the analysis of the data, the results indicate a wide non-compliance with the Jordanian Standard 983/2006. Most problematic parameters are BOD, COD, nitrogen content, TSS. TWW will be blended with fresh water prior to use in agriculture. The blended water quality was reviewed after mixing of fresh water with the existing TWW without plant improvements. In general if there are no WWTP upgrades, the blended water quality satisfies the requirements of the Jordanian Water Quality Guidelines.

Palm oil mills discharge raw effluent with high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of about 25 000 mg O2/dm3 . Conventional effluent treatment system uses ponds with a long hydraulic retention time of about 55–85 days, but the reduction of BOD is usually halted at 100–250 mg O2/dm 3. Further reduction of BOD to below 20 mg O2/dm3 to meet regulation requirement needs further advanced treatment. This study evaluates the efficiency of an effluent polishing plant installed at a palm oil mill targeting final effluent BOD below 20 mg O2/dm3. Characteristic of the incoming and treated effluent, dissolved oxygen in the aeration ponds and the effluent flow rate of the treatment plant have been determined. Due to low process throughput at the mill, the polishing plant operated at only 60% of its designed capacity. Treatment of effluent showed reduction of BOD from 39.3±5.8 to 6.1±3.8 mg O2/dm3, i.e., a reduction by 80–94%. Colour – a newly proposed regulation parameter – was reduced from 1081±69 to 845±60 ADMI, i.e., by 11–30%. This study indicates that while the treatment of effluent to reduce the BOD to below 20 O2/dm3 O2/dm3 is feasible, reduction of colour to less than 100 ADMI is not achievable.

Opis:
Three samples of cosmetic wastewater from the production of soaps and shampoos were treated by the following processes: coagulation with sedimentation (C/S), coagulation with dissolved air flotation (C/DAF), and the Fenton process (FP). The COD values of raw wastewater samples were 13 160, 13 580 and 9410 mg O2/dm3. The anionic surfactants were 3000, 4500 and 4000 mg/dm3, for samples 1, 2, and 3, respectively. All three processes were effective in highly polluted cosmetic wastewater treatment. The most effective process was coagulation. In the case of sample 1, application of FeCl3 at pH 6.0 resulted in 88.2% of COD removal and the application of aluminum based coagulants allowed for 80.1–85.3% COD removal. In the case of samples 2 and 3, the usage of Al 1019 and Al 3010 coagulants brought about a 91.6% and 82.6% decrease in COD values, respectively. C/DAF was found to be less effective than C/S. The best results with C/DAF were obtained using Al 3010 coagulant with wastewater recirculation the COD removal efficiency amounted to 82.3, 87.3 and 78.8, respectively. The lowest COD removal efficiency was observed for FP and it was equal to 64.0 and 72.7% for samples 2 and 3, respectively.

A novel coagulant, polyferric(III)-magnesium(II) sulfate (PFMS), was prepared. The preparation technology was optimized and the optimized PFMS product was used to treat actual textile wastewater. The performance of PFMS was evaluated and compared with those of conventional coagulants. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry show that PFMS is a macromolecular composite polymer of ferric and magnesium based on -OH bonds. The coagulation performance of PFMS is better than those of PFS, PAC, and PFC. The coagulation mechanism of PFMS in treating actual textile wastewater is primarily driven by charge neutralization at low dosages and co-precipitation netting at high dosages.
