Opis:
Performance of various materials such as activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, and aluminosilicate for aquatic adsorption of micropollutants has been compared. Micropollutants (bisphenol A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP)) were removed from artificial effluent which was spiked with standards of those chemicals. It was found that nonylphenol was more favorable adsorbed by all the sorbents than BPA. The higher adsorption capacities for BPA and NP showed single walled carbon nanotubes and activated carbon (AKPA). Slightly lower removal efficiencies of the studied micropollutants were observed for the multi-walled carbon nanotubes and activated carbon SX2. Taking into account the porous structure of the sorbents, it can be concluded that the materials containing mesopores had lower sorption capacities for BPA and NP than materials with microporous structure. Ad-sorption of micropollutants was much quicker for the carbon nanotubes than for the activated carbon.

Opis:
Research into water retention of superabsorbents is a relatively recent phenomenon, and its methodology has not yet been fully elaborated. Our results suggest considerable water retention dynamics of superabsorbents in the range of small potentials. In the study, three methods of water retention measurements have been compared for 4 selected superabsorbents from the group of cross-linked polymers. The measurement problems faced during the analysis have been revealed such as those resulting from the specificity of the examined material, e.g. the influence of the pressure of the sorbent layer from the upper parts of the samples, as well as the difference between mechanisms of water sorption and desorption processes.

Opis:
The presented work attempted to modify activated carbons with ultrasonic field and evaluate the efficiency of sorption of organic compounds on the obtained modified activated carbons. The results showed that the applied procedure had a positive effect on the removal of the investigated substance. In the case of removal of benzoic and phthalic acids, the highest sorption capacities were obtained for activated carbons modified with ultrasonic waves with the amplitude of 100% and the exposure time of 5 min. The removal efficiency for both acids was approximately 80% at the initial pH and 65% at pH = 8.0. Sorption of imidazole on modified activated carbons showed that lower final concentration was obtained for activated carbons modified with ultrasounds at the amplitude of 100%. The time of exposure to ultrasounds did not have a significant effect on reducing final concentrations. The average removal degree was approximately 45%. Sorption of phenol showed that the average degree of removal was approximately 80% for the solution of the initial pH whereas for higher pH the average removal degree was close to 65%.

Opis:
Physical, chemical, morphological properties and sorption characteristics of anaerobically digested dewatered municipal sewage sludge have been investigated including the surface area, pore size distribution, chemical composition, surface chemistry structure, surface physical morphology, mineralogy, cation exchange capacity, heavy metal content, total solid, total volatile solid, total Kjeldahl-N, total phosphorus content of the sewage sludge. The sorption potential of sewage sludge for the removal of 4-CP and 2,4-DCP from aqueous solutions was examined by investigating their adsorption isotherms and kinetics in a lab-scale batch study. Findings of this study clearly showed that sewage sludge provides chlorophenol removal in the landfill body as disposed with solid wastes.

Opis:
The feasibility of various composts to operate as sorbents for heavy metals (Cu and Zn) removal from wastewater has been evaluated. Three commercial composts obtained from municipal solid wastes (MWS), sludge sewage (SS) and poultry manure (PM) were selected as potential sorbents. Kinetic and equilibrium tests were conducted in order to assess the equilibrium conditions to remove metals from aqueous samples. For all composts, the maximum time necessary to reach the equilibrium was 240 min. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were found to fit the sorption data. The SS compost proved to be the one with highest removal capability for both assessed metals, while MWS compost showed to be the less suitable for this purpose. These results can be explained in terms of the compost surface properties, namely, with the cation exchange capacity.

Opis:
The use of γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3) nanoparticles as adsorbent to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was investigated using batch experiments. Adsorption experiments were carried out for various initial doses of Al2O3, initial concentrations of chromium(VI), contact times and pH. The structure and morphology of the sorbent was characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. Results demonstrated that the removal efficiency of chromium(VI) was increased by increasing the contact time, initial concentration, and pH. The results of the study showed that adsorption of chromium by γ-alumina nanoparticles reached equilibrium after 60 min and after that a little change of chromium removal efficiency was observed. Furthermore, kinetics of chromium sorption was well fitted by pseudo-second order kinetic model, and well explained by the Freundlich isotherm (R2 > 0.992). Overall, alumina nanoparticles recognized as an effective sorbent to remove chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
The feasibility of effluent treatment in separate processes and in integrated systems has been compared. In the sorption process, carbon nanotubes were used in a pressure installation, enabling execution of the process of sorption with nanofiltration in a cross-flow system. Evaluation of treatment effects based on the measurement of typical pollution parameters (COD, TOC, phenolic index, forms of nitrogen and phosphorus) and concentration of bisphenol A. The results show poor feasibility of sorption as a process for advanced treatment of municipal effluent. Effluent polishing in integrated sorption-nanofiltration systems, however, guaranteed high removal rates of organic and inorganic pollutants.

Opis:
Sorption capacities of low-moor peats and Neogene clays from the overburden of lignite beds in Central Poland for Cr(III) ions as chloride and metalorganic complex ions have been investigated. The binding mechanisms and sorption parameters were determined based on the Freundlich and Langmuir nonlinear sorption isotherms. The sorption capacities of studied materials for Cr(III) ions depended on their properties (porosity, average pore diameters, specific surface area and content of Fe hydroxyoxides) as well as charge of Cr(III) ions, functional groups and their diagonal lengths. Cr(III) ions from chlorides were bound onto sorbents via Coulomb attraction and by Fe hydroxy-oxides. However the complex Cr(III) ions were bound to the sorbent surface via hydrogen bonds between the dye -OH groups and =O of the sorbent functional groups. The equation parameters of sorption isotherms indicate cooperative heterogeneous adsorption at low Cr(III) concentrations and chemisorption at high Cr(III) concentrations
