Opis:
Intensive farming is main industry which produces large amount of animal manure wastewater with high content of phosphorus. Its discharging to surface water leads to eutrophication. On the other hand, phosphorus is vital for plant growth and its natural reserves are rapidly exhausted. Therefore, recovering phosphorus from animal manure wastewater can achieve two important goals: prevention of eutrophication and recovery of non-renewable phosphorus compounds. The method of struvite precipitation has been presented for phosphorus recovery from animal manure wastewater. Based on scenario study, 8.76 million tons of struvite could be produced from animal manure wastewater in China.

Opis:
The compositions of bacterial communities and populations during aerobic stabilization of livestock manure have been investigated, focusing on how the aging of feedstock affected the bacterial diversity of the composting mass. The livestock manure was divided into two groups – aged and fresh, and then used to prepare the feedstock with additives. Composting experiments were carried out for 15 days using a pilot-scale batch reactor with vacuum-induced aeration. Two different aeration rates were applied to the batch reactor, and their effectiveness was evaluated. Changes in total heterotrophic bacteria count and moisture content were monitored. The associated changes in bacterial community compositions were characterized using 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequencing. The Firmicutes in the fresh manure decreased from 48 to 13% for the first ten days, and the dominant phylum shifted to the Proteobacteria (29%), Bacteroidetes (23%), Actinobacteria (20%), and others(15%). Under the given conditions, the use of relatively fresh manure was essential to preserve thediverse bacterial populations in the feedstock and enhance the bacterial diversity during aerobic stabilization.More research should be performed to investigate the degradability of emerging contaminants (e.g., antibiotics) in livestock manure using an engineered composting system providing well-controlled environmental conditions.

Opis:
The feasibility of various composts to operate as sorbents for heavy metals (Cu and Zn) removal from wastewater has been evaluated. Three commercial composts obtained from municipal solid wastes (MWS), sludge sewage (SS) and poultry manure (PM) were selected as potential sorbents. Kinetic and equilibrium tests were conducted in order to assess the equilibrium conditions to remove metals from aqueous samples. For all composts, the maximum time necessary to reach the equilibrium was 240 min. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were found to fit the sorption data. The SS compost proved to be the one with highest removal capability for both assessed metals, while MWS compost showed to be the less suitable for this purpose. These results can be explained in terms of the compost surface properties, namely, with the cation exchange capacity.
