Opis:
The usability of surfactant-aided ultrafiltration for removal of fluoride ions from aqueous solutions has been investigated. The experiments were conducted with the use of cellulose and polyethersulfone membranes. Fluoride solutions containing 10 and 100 mg F/dm3 and cationic surfactants: octadecylamine acetate (ODA) and hexadecylpyridium chloride (CPC) were used in the experiments. The concentration of surfactants amounted to 320–960 mg/dm3. Ultrafiltration process was run under a trans-membrane pressure of 0.2 MPa. In the course of experiments, the effects of initial fluoride concentration, surfactant concentration and membrane type on the fluoride retention coefficient as well as the permeate flux were studied. It was found that the increase of the surfactant concentration effected in improvement of the separation efficiency. On contrary, the permeate flux decreased upon increase of the surfactant concentration. The process efficiency was also strongly influenced by the membrane and surfactant type. The permissible concentration of fluoride in the final product (below 1.5 mg F/dm3) was obtained for the test with initial solutions containing 10 mg F/dm3, polyethersulfone membrane and CPC con-centration equal to 644 and 966 mg/dm3.

The usefulness of the Donnan dialysis has been assessed for the elimination of harmful (bromide, bromate and nitrate) or troublesome (calcium and magnesium) ions from water. The rate and efficiency of ion exchange were examined. For anion removal Selemion AM V or Neosepta ACS membranes were used while for cation removal - Neosepta CMX or Selemion CMV ones. The influence of membrane properties and salt concentration in the receiver was investigated.

Opis:
Palm oil mills discharge raw effluent with high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of about 25 000 mg O2/dm3 . Conventional effluent treatment system uses ponds with a long hydraulic retention time of about 55–85 days, but the reduction of BOD is usually halted at 100–250 mg O2/dm 3. Further reduction of BOD to below 20 mg O2/dm3 to meet regulation requirement needs further advanced treatment. This study evaluates the efficiency of an effluent polishing plant installed at a palm oil mill targeting final effluent BOD below 20 mg O2/dm3. Characteristic of the incoming and treated effluent, dissolved oxygen in the aeration ponds and the effluent flow rate of the treatment plant have been determined. Due to low process throughput at the mill, the polishing plant operated at only 60% of its designed capacity. Treatment of effluent showed reduction of BOD from 39.3±5.8 to 6.1±3.8 mg O2/dm3, i.e., a reduction by 80–94%. Colour – a newly proposed regulation parameter – was reduced from 1081±69 to 845±60 ADMI, i.e., by 11–30%. This study indicates that while the treatment of effluent to reduce the BOD to below 20 O2/dm3 O2/dm3 is feasible, reduction of colour to less than 100 ADMI is not achievable.

Opis:
he usability of the micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) for removal of phosphates from aqueous solutions has been evaluated. The process was performed with the use of polyethersulfone membranes under various transmembrane pressures (0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 MPa). Phosphorous solutions containing 15 mg of PO3-4/dm3 and two cationic surfactants: octadecylamine acetate (ODA) and hexadecylpyridium chloride (CPC) were used in the tests. The concentration of ODA and CPC amounted to 2 and 3 CMC (Critical Micelle Concentration) as well as 2, 3 and 6 CMC, respectively. The results of the study showed that the surfactant type and its concentration influenced the process efficiency. The phosphate removal with the use of ODA was approximately 95%, whereas application of CPC gave unsatisfactory results.

Opis:
Heterogeneous reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been prepared from cellulose acetate (CA) and modified coal through chemical activation. Nitric acid of various concentrations, sulfuric and acetic acids used for various time periods have been studied with respect to modification of structure of coal and consequently structure of RO membranes. The effect of these variables on the modification of coal was examined by IR spectroscopy. All membranes prepared in such a way showed improved performance in comparison with standard CA membranes. The volume flux of the best RO membranes at 94% level of solute separation was 3.87×10–2 m3/(m2·h) at 1.76 MPa using aqueous feed solution 400 mg/dm3 of sodium chloride. The performance improvement was related to increases of charge of groups of coal particles in the membrane, affecting their rheology and morphology resulting in better membrane productivity. The SEM of some membranes have also been presented. These membranes were tested also with 1:1, 1:2, 2:2 and 1:3 inorganic salt solutions. The agreement between the calculated and experimental data of solute separation for studied solutes was reasonably good.

Opis:
The results of ultrafiltration tests carried out with model BSA and myoglobin solutions using ceramic 50 and 150 kDa membranes have been presented. Membrane permeability and selectivity were investigated in function of pH, transmembrane pressure (TMP) as well as molecular modelling data for proteins such as size, geometrical parameters and pH of minimal free energy of folding. The study has shown that the permeate flux J(v) depends on TMP, whereas the protein rejection is mainly influenced by pH. The results demonstrated that molecular modelling data are not sufficient to explain the membrane behaviour and the membrane–protein charge interactions and fouling effects must be also considered to explain the rejection mechanisms.

Opis:
Unit and integrated membrane operations were investigated for purification of a spent alkaline single-phase detergent from a CIP system in a milk production plant. The filtration experiments were performed in a concentration mode with the use of UF and NF modules differing in their configuration, MWCO, and polymer material. The performance of the modules was characterised in terms of their retention characteristics, hydraulic efficiency, and tendency to fouling. The results revealed that unit and integrated membrane processes were suitable for the recovery of spent cleaning baths containing single-phase detergents, and the permeates maintained their basic cleaning properties. Due to the greater selectivity of the NF module, integrated membrane operations resulted in a much greater modification of the composition of the single-phase detergent in comparison with unit UF processes.

Contamination of soil and groundwater with pesticides is mainly caused by old ecological burdens. This study focuses on the treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated pesticides. The contaminants mainly include α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, HCB, DDE, DDD and DDT. Reverse osmosis technology using RO98pHt polyamide membranes was used to remove the pollutants under batch process conditions. The observed rate of removal ranged from 98.4% to 99.7%. Total dissolved content solids decreased from 1.35 g/dm3 to below 0.05 g/dm3.

Opis:
Decomposition kinetics of natural organic substances during the photocatalytic process with a semi-conductor TiO2 has been investigated. In the study, a laboratory reactor Heraeus and in a photocatalytic membrane reactor were used. Simulated solutions of deionized water, surface water and fulvic acids, differing in composition, were tested in the experiment. In order to determine reaction rate constants, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model based on the first order reaction was applied. It was found that photocatalytic process enabled effective degradation of natural organic substances although its run was affected by inorganic ions, mainly those producing water hardness, present in water.
