Opis:
Leaching of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr) from hazardous waste originating from steel works (slag) has been investigated. Contaminant leaching behavior from monolithic waste materials in the function of time was examined. There was established the cumulative leaching of elements per surface area of waste material and the impact of the duration of the leachant contact with the waste on the leachability. The types of processes accompanying the release of heavy metals were determined as well. Surface wash-off and dissolution were dominant processes during the leaching of the analyzed elements. Chromium was the only element whose release from the sample was controlled by diffusion when subjected to leaching in a liquid of pH 7. Due to the low levels of heavy metal leaching in relation to their concentrations in the samples, it seems that longer duration of the tank test can contribute to the release of additional amounts of the heavy metals.

Opis:
At some point during acid leaching column tests of heavy metals from municipal waste incineration ash, sudden and rapid elution of harmful elements was observed which was called the breakthrough (BT) phenomena. The mechanism was elucidated from the results of measurement of elemental and particle size distribution in the column and batch leaching tests as follows. At the first stage of experimental runs, CaCO3 was dissolved in acidic solution and pH profile along the bed is formed. Some of the minor elements of Zn and Al dissolved by acid at the upper part of the column are precipitated at bottom of the column, leading to the reduction of flow rate of the leachate solution. After leachate pH becomes low by the termination of dissolution of Ca, these deposits are dissolved and thus, the flow rate increases. Most of the trace elements behave as such, which causes the increase of harmful element concentrations in the eluate. Some drastic concentration increase of harmful elements in leachate may occur even after the long period of pseudo stable dissolution behavior in the land-fill site.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of additives such as waste moulding sands (WMS) and dolomite flotation waste (F) on heavy metal immobilization during vitrification of tannery sewage sludge. Sewage sludge with addition of waste moulding sands of 25-45 vol. % and flotation waste of 5-25 vol. % was used in the vitrification process. The study demonstrated a direct correlation between the WMS fraction in the vitrified formulations and heavy metal immobilization in the obtained vitrificates. Vitrification of sewage sludge with these additives resulted in obtaining vitreous products with reduced heavy metal leaching properties; the lowest content of heavy metals in the leachates was found in the vitrificates with the highest content of waste moulding sands.

Opis:
Mass balance of selected heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, Zn, Cd) released from waste into leachate during 8 years of landfill exploitation has been calculated. The average release of all analyzed heavy metals did not exceed 1.7%. Heavy metals released in the largest quantities were Cr (0.025 –1.685%), Hg (0.033–1.540%) and Cd (0.082–0.701%). Release of Pb, Cu, Zn was 0.008–0.152%; 0.012–0.085% and 0.007–0.152%, respectively. Cr and Hg do not form an insoluble sulfide precipitate and that is why they are released in a larger amount. Cd and Pb concentrations are positively correlated with the amount of the atmospheric precipitation and the amount of leachates, which means that infiltrating rainfall can leach out these metals from waste. Favorable conditions for leaching of these metals are probably a result of their precipitation as carbonates. A strong correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr indicates they do not precipitate as carbonates and further they can be subject to desorption processes. In the case of Cu, Zn, Cr and Hg, a positive correlation with the amount of deposited waste was also observed.

Opis:
Stabilization/solidification (S/S) method is a potential solution for immobilization of heavy metals containing waste. Immobilization of heavy metals from spent grit, waste material from the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, into the fly ash based geopolymers using the S/S method was evaluated. Addition of spent grit in the quantity of 10% of total solid content of geopolymer mixture decreased the compressive strength of fly ash based geopolymers but did not affect the change of geopolymer strength in function of synthesis parameters. TCLP and EN 12457-2 leaching test were used for the evaluation of chemical stability of contaminated geopolymers with respect to the leaching of heavy metals. The both, TCLP and EN 12457 leachates fulfill the maximum acceptable limits for landfill disposal with respect to the heavy metals concentration. The highest concentration of Zn is observed in a both, TCLP and EN 12457 leachates due to the synthesis parameters.
