Opis:
Intensive farming is main industry which produces large amount of animal manure wastewater with high content of phosphorus. Its discharging to surface water leads to eutrophication. On the other hand, phosphorus is vital for plant growth and its natural reserves are rapidly exhausted. Therefore, recovering phosphorus from animal manure wastewater can achieve two important goals: prevention of eutrophication and recovery of non-renewable phosphorus compounds. The method of struvite precipitation has been presented for phosphorus recovery from animal manure wastewater. Based on scenario study, 8.76 million tons of struvite could be produced from animal manure wastewater in China.

Opis:
This work focuses on the surface modification of fly ash spheroidal particles and their application in phosphorus and chromium(VI) adsorption. The results show that through surface modification, amorphous silica-alumina gels precipitated on the spheroidal particle surface (by which the microsurface area of the reaction products is effectively enlarged) and the surface zeta potential was changed to fit for adsorbing anions. During the adsorption experiment (single and competitive solute systems), chromium(VI) was easier to adsorb. The surface zeta potential and the existence of competitive ions should be recognized as two important factors affecting adsorption efficiency. A higher temperature could improve the adsorption efficiencies of the two solute systems. The fitting results of the pseudo-second-order model (single and competitive solute systems) show better agreement than those of the pseudo-first-order model at every temperature. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation can better simulate the adsorption process in single solute sy039stems, but only the chromium(VI) adsorption process can be fitted by the competitive Langmuir adsorption isotherm in competitive solute systems.

Opis:
A new strategy of enrichment of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) and denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) at low temperature ranging from 8 °C to 11 °C was demonstrated through two lab-scale reactors operated in sequential anaerobic-aerobic (AO) or anaerobic-anoxic (AA) conditions. It was found that the AO reactor is able to achieve a good phosphorus removal performance after 40 days of operation, while a similar stable phosphorus removal can be obtained in the AA reactor after 80 days. This result suggests that the enrichment of PAO was easier than that of DP AO at low temperature. Through switching batch tests, when DPAO is exposed to aerobic conditions, it can immediately exhibit a good phosphorus removal similar to that under anoxic conditions, while PAO can only present poor phosphorus removal when exposed to anoxic conditions, suggesting that two different types of Accumulibacter were enriched both in AA and AO reactors. Microbial analysis with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2 -phenylindole) staining revealed that Accumulibacter was dominant both in the two reactors, accounting for 61.6% and 79.3% of all bacteria in AA and AO reactors, respectively. Although the different amount of Accumulibacter was enriched in the two reactors, the similar microbial morphologies were observed by using scanning electron micrograph (SEM), both presenting long-rod morphology. This kind of Accumulibacter may display affinities for sodium acetate used as the carbon sources here. This strategy proposed in this study was shown to be effective in achieving a very high enrichment of Accumulibacter at low temperature by linking chemical analysis with microbial observation.

Opis:
Removal of biogens (P, N) from synthetic wastewater by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was investigated. The study was carried out under static conditions (batch tests). Significant differences were found in the removal of nutrients by algae. The removal of biogens was >50% for ammonium ions and >80% for nitrates and phosphates. N and P removal through assimilation by microalgal C. vulgaris species can be considered an ecological alternative for current methods applied for removal of these substances from wastewater. It seems that using algae for N and P removal from wastewater can be affordable in comparison to other methods. The efficiency of biogens removal depends on the type of a biogen to be removed and the concentration of N and P in solutions. Optimization of N:P ratio can have some positive influence on the removal of biogens from wastewater by C. vulgaris.

Opis:
Wastewater coagulation and electrocoagulation were investigated as sorption processes involving colloidal sorbents such as (Al(OH)3)n, (Fe(OH)3)m and (Fe(OH)2)p. An attempt was made to fit experimental data to two popular sorption models. Based on a statistical and mathematical analysis of the obtained results, the Langmuir model of chemical adsorption was regarded more probable than the Freundlich model. The highest maximum adsorption of phosphorus in the analyzed wastewater was achieved with the use of PIX, and the lowest adsorption maxima were reported for an iron electrocoagulant. PAC was most effective in reducing COD of wastewater. PAC and PIX delivered higher adsorption maxima for compounds responsible for COD than aluminum and iron electrocoagulants.

Opis:
Excessive sewage sludge in terms of contained phosphorus speciation forms has been characterized. The analysis allowed identification of mobile forms of phosphorus in sewage sludge. Quantification of mobile forms of phosphorus is very important for its recovery directly from sewage sludge or for its application for natural purposes. Various phosphorus speciation methods have been presented. The results of the sewage sludge speciation conducted by means of two types of wastewater treatment (EvU-Perl technology and activated sludge) have been compared. The analysis covered the effect of such physiochemical factors as oxygenation, use of ultrasound and precipitation with iron chloride(III). It was concluded that changes in physiochemical conditions lead to alterations in the content of phosphorus speciation forms in sewage sludge.
