Opis:
The objective of anaerobic digester start-up is to achieve steady-state operation and the required reduction performance in the shortest possible time. The present study aims to assess a novel strategy to start-up pilot scale mesophilic anaerobic digester with internal inoculums; the operational parameters such as feed concentration and operating temperature were also evaluated. Three pilot scale anaerobic digester systems were designed and manufactured. They were equipped with all necessary instruments for measurements, operation and control. Each system consists of a feed tank, a reactor (anaerobic digester), a gas storage tank, and a displaced water collecting tank. The digester start-up was achieved successfully and smoothly without any operational problems. The feed concentration had minor effects on the performance of the digester start-up while the operating temperature has approximately no effect.

Opis:
The anaerobic digestion of mixing brewery sludge with vinasse and silica mud at various ratios under thermophilic conditions was explored. Vinasse, silica mud and beer sludge (the sludge from the treatment of beer wastewater) are the main solid wastes of the beer production. Uncontrolled decom-position of these wastes could cause large-scale contamination of soil, water, and air. The results of the investigation showed that the optimal ratio of beer sludge and vinasse was 1:1 under total solids of 10%, producing the highest amount of gas of 1.34 cm3/g within 24 h and 4.06 cm3/g in 10 days. The silica mud weakened the fermentation process and reduced the gas production, and the concentration of total organic carbon, total nitrogen and volatile solids decreased during the digestion. For the mixture of brewery sludge and vinasse, the content of the total organic matter in the biogas manure was more than 60% and the value of pH was 6.5 after the anaerobic digestion, indicating that the manure can be used as an organic fertilizer.

Opis:
An economic analysis of the dry anaerobic digestion (AD) in Poland operated with various input streams has been presented, ranging from the organic fraction of residual waste to biowaste from various sources. The shares of individual costs and revenues change significantly in these operation options. Sensitivity analyses, performed under assumption of four different market conditions showed that the profitability of AD plants is unpredictable. Assuming the current legal situation, the final profit or loss of the digestion technology strongly depends on the prices of energy. The final economic output for the anaerobic digestion was compared to the output of an aerobic stabilization process.

Opis:
The actual sizes of precast anaerobic digestion tanks (600 dm3) combined with food waste disposer systems (PAD-FWD) were selected to investigate efficiency under actual use conditions. The effects of organic loading rates (OLRs) and the presence of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) surfactants in dishwashing liquid on the organic removal efficiency and biogas generation of PAD-FWD were studied. According to the findings, the PAD-FWD at an OLR of 0.13 kg VS/(m3·day) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 days could be applied to treat food waste without adding any nutrients to the system to effectively produce biogas. Under operating conditions of the LAS concentration of 63.4 mg/dm3, PAD-FWD was able to reach a steady-state condition with a performance similar to the system without added LAS. The quality of effluent from the PAD-FWD system was unable to meet the effluent standard for households; thus, this effluent should be collected for treatment in a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WTP) before release into the environment. The effluent quality at an OLR of 0.13 kg VS/(m3·day) was in the range of the influent properties of the central WTP, which ensures that the pollutants in the effluent do not increase the overall burden on the WTP. The bio-sludge from PAD-FWD was not a sufficient nutrient source for the growing plants. However, the germination index (GI) of the effluent at an OLR of 0.13 kg VS/(m3·day) did meet the fertilizer standard. The results of this study can be applied to develop self-management of food waste technology to encourage the separation of food waste at the origin within households.

Opis:
Anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and corn silage with zero-valent iron powder (Fe0), cellulase, and papain as reinforcement means was conducted. COD-based feeding ratio of sewage sludge to corn silage was set to 2:1, the solids retention time (SRT) 20 day, digestion temperature 35 °C, and mixing speed 60 rpm. Removal rates of total COD during the control group, and Fe0, papain, cellulase, and papain, Fe0, and the two kinds of enzyme-added tests were 38.04, 41.02, 34.62, 34.55, 35.42, and 48.21%, respectively. The corresponding biogas production was 2.12, 2.62, 2.22, 2.41, 2.25, and 2.81 dm3/day, respectively. The results indicated the addition of cellulase, and papain could maximize the decomposition and hydrolysis of organic matter in sewage sludge and corn silage to volatile fatty acids. Fe0 could reduce the redox potentials of the anaerobic co-digestion, optimize the circumstances of the methanogenesis stage, accelerate biogas production, and improve biogas components. Fe0 and enzymes played a synergistic role in the anaerobic co-digestion system. Life cycle assessment indicated that the anaerobic co-digestion of sludge and corn silage co-substrates could benefit the economy, environment, and social development under the synergistic action of Fe0 and enzymes.

Removal of two acidic pharmaceuticals, clofibric acid and diclofenac, present in sewage sludge using two kinds of anaerobic digestions was investigated. The effective isolation and purification pretreatment to extract the target compounds from the sewage sludge samples was firstly established, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to identify and quantify them. Under mesophilic conditions, the removal efficiencies for clofibric acid and diclofenac with the initial concentrations of 5 μg /dm3 were up to 95% and 97%. After thermophilic anaerobic digestion, the removal efficiency could be increased to 99.3% for clofibric acid, however, it did not increase for diclofenac. In general, anaerobic digestion could effectively remove the target compounds from the sewage sludge (all above 90%).

Feasibility and possible use of grease trap waste (GTW) as a co-substrate for improving biogas production in anaerobic digestion with sewage sludge has been established. Anaerobic co-digestion was studied in a semi-continuous experiment at 37 °C with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 days. The grease trap sludge accounted for 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30% of the mixture based on volatile solids. The results of the present laboratory study revealed that the use of GTW as a cosubstrate is considered to be interesting option for digestion of sewage sludge due to increased methane production.

Possibility of using phosphogypsum as a mineral substrate for the sewage sludge treatment in bio-sulfidogenic conditions has been investigated. Anaerobic microbiological degradation (AMD) on way of sulfidogenesis was used to produce biogenic hydrogen sulfide. The ozonation of the sludge prior to the AMD under bio-sulfidogenic conditions led to higher efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide production and organic matter removal. After 20 days of digestion, the elimination of CODt and CODs varied between 78-84% and 83-87%, respectively, within advanced operation of anaerobic bioreactor. Technological applications of such system has been discussed.

Opis:
The effect of ultrasonic treatment on two different waste activated sludges (WASI and WAS2) was compared by batch tests. WASI was taken from an industrial WWTP that treats pulp and paper wastewater, WAS2 was obtained from a traditional municipal WWTP. Physical and chemical characterization of sludges and supernatants was performed at various specific energy inputs. Upon increasing specific energy input, sludge structure changed, particle size decreased and organic and nitrogen release increased. A different release of organic matter and nitrogen compound related to the sludge origin was observed. The study is a preliminary assay of the potential of sonication treatment to enhance biogas production in anaerobic digestion.

The study summarises the energy consumption data obtained from the Slovak wastewater treatment plants. Overall, 51 large WWTPs using mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion and biogas utilisation (the total capacity of 2.5 mil. p.e.) and 17 small rural WWTPs (the total capacity 15 000 p.e.) were compared in many technological and energy parameters. The average energy consumption in large WWTPs in Slovakia is 0.485 kWh/m3 and 0.915 kWh/m3 in small rural plants. The average energy demand related to BOD5 load represents the value of 2.27 kWh/kg BOD5, in Slovak plants. The specific energy production is relatively low - in average 1.2 kWh el /m3 of produced biogas and 0.1 kWh el /m 3 of treated wastewater, respectively. The average energy autarky in Slovak plants is 25.2%. Some plants have high energy autarky (>65%), despite no external biowastes being dosed to these during operation.
