Opis:
The paper concerns the effect of thermal inversions on PM10 concentrations in winter seasons between 2004–2005 and 2012–2013 in Tricity. Temperature inversions were analyzed using aerological measurements timed at 00 UTC and 12 UTC obtained from the aerological station in Łeba. The PM10 concentrations were obtained from five Agency of Regional Air Quality stations in the Gdańsk metropolitan area (ARMAAG). The effect of inversion conditions on the variability of daily PM10 concentrations was assessed using single and multiple linear regressions. The unfavorable conditions of PM10 dispersion in the lower troposphere were mostly determined by elevated inversions, which occurred with comparable frequency, nearly 90%, during the day as well as at night. Surface inversions were recorded at a frequency of 30% at night and only 10% during day-time. The strongest adverse effect on PM10 concentrations and their variability during the period of calendar winter was found to be related to the thickness of surface inversions at night. A significant yet substantially less adverse effect during both day and night, however, was found to be related to the thickness of the lowest layer of upper inversion. The high location of the base of upper inversion, primarily during the day-time, contributed to a decrease in PM10 concentration.

Opis:
Biofilters are a potential treatment option for removing pollutants from feedlot runoff but little research has been done on their use and design. In this study, two mechanism -based models were developed to simulate biofilter processes: a first-order model and a logistic model. The two models were calibrated and evaluated using nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) data collected from rainfall events for an experimental biofilter at Melrose, Minnesota, USA. The first-order model predicted removal efficiencies better than the logistic model. The sensitivity analysis suggested that the predictions of the first-order model are more sensitive to parameter. In addition, the uncertainty analysis suggested that the range in predictive errors could be a consequence of uncertainty of estimating parameter from the limited data set for the first-order model. In contrast, the uncertainty analysis for the logistic model of N suggested that reasons other than the uncertainty in parameter estimation are needed to explain predictive errors. Overall, the study provides a useful tool for assessing biofilter performance that can easily be improved with larger observed data sets. The biofilter model has been implemented in the most recent version of the Minnesota feedlot annualized runoff model (MinnFARM).

Opis:
A widely used method for reducing odor emissions into the air at municipal waste plants is biofiltration. This method allows obtaining high gaseous pollutant removal efficiency at relatively low investment and operating costs. Evaluating the efficiency of a biofilter using dynamic olfactometry is a very useful tool because it allows determining the degree of total deodorization efficiency. Determining the concentrations of individual pollutants does not always give an overall assessment of the degree of olfactory pollution by the gases being emitted, and at the same may not be sufficient in the case of evaluating the efficiency of a deodorization installation. The paper presents the results of the evaluation of biofilter efficiency performed based on olfactometric determinations. The measurements were conducted for biofilter-treated gases emitted from various sources within four municipal waste processing plants. Obtained results indicated the biofiltration efficiency between 60.8 and 97.2% and showed that after the filter bed replacing (organic instead of mineral bed) deodorization efficiency significantly increased. An important aspect of the overall evaluation was the evaluation of odor hedonic quality, due to the frequently intense natural odor of the biofilter bed itself.

Opis:
Various additives, including cement, quicklime, fly ash, montmorillonite, sepiolite and their proportions were employed to stabilize/solidify artificially prepared soils contaminated simultaneously with two kinds of ions such as Cd2+ and Pb2+. The unconfined compressive strength of the stabilized soils was measured to estimate the possibility of recycling. The efficiency of Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in contaminated soils was also evaluated using the US EPA TCLP toxicity test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the immobilization of heavy metals. The experimental results demonstrate that in terms of soils simultaneously polluted with Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions, the curing effect of fly ash is better than that of montmorillonite and sepiolite. When Cd2+ and Pb2+ coexist in soil specimens, the curing is more difficult than for Cd2+ or Pb2+ alone, which is antagonistic mechanism. Also, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ gradually decreases upon increasing pH when pH < 8. For pH ≥ 8, the leaching concentration of Cd2+ and Pb2+ reached a minimum. Besides, the results of XRD and SEM are in agreement with those of the strength and leaching tests.

Wastewater contains numerous saprophytic microorganisms, pathogenic and potentially pathogenic. Detection of bacteria indicating the sanitary state of polluted waters shows the possibility of occurring of pathogenic microorganisms in that environment. In the presented paper, the effectiveness of removing microbiological pollutions from wastewater treated by the activated sludge method has been evaluated, by estimating the elimination of E. coli, faecal streptococci, rods of the genus Salmonella and bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Experimental research showed that often in spite of a high degree of elimination of bacteria at individual stages of treatment, they are still identified in wastewater discharged to the water environment. The fact of occurring bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae and rods of Salmonella in treated wastewater discharged to surface waters is particularly worrying.

Atmospheric pollution has been receiving a significant interest for several decades since industries cause more and more pollution. Thanks to the development of many prediction techniques, scientists and industries are focusing more on pollution prediction. The aim of this work is to predict the two pollutant concentrations (NOx and CO) in industrial sites by a modified radial basis function (RBF) based neural network. The modification considered the spread parameter h of the activation function in the RBF network. In order to get the best network, the variations of this parameter for three cases were considered. In the first case, only pollutants concentrations variables were used, while in the second one, only the meteorological variables were utilized. In the third case, pollutants' concentrations were connected with meteorological variables. Based on calculation errors, the best model that ensures the best monitoring of pollutants concentration could be identified.

Opis:
Concentrations of iron and manganese were investigated in 26 sediment samples from the Czorsztyn Reservoir (South Poland). Spatial distribution of these metals in the reservoir is generally linked to the grain size distribution of sediments. The presence of manganese and iron in sediments is mainly related to the rock weathering and soil erosion processes. Furthermore, enrichment of waters in manganese and iron follows as a result of the Dunajec River flowing through the Orawsko-Nowotarska Valley, where peat bogs are present. However, anthropogenic influence on manganese and iron concentration levels in sediments cannot be excluded in this area.

Opis:
The study mainly delineates the application of AERMOD to evaluate PM10 concentrations for the selected opencast mines in The Jharia coalfield. AERMOD estimated PM10 concentration profiles were developed on the basis of evaluated emission rates of salient coal mining activities. While comparing these estimated values with monitored values of PM10, the evaluated indices of agreement were found to be 0.86, 0.84 and 0.88 during winter and 0.94, 0.68 and 0.87 during summer for the Katrasgarh, Muraidih and Rajapur opencast mines, respectively. In a like manner, performance evaluation of AERMOD evaluated concentrations over actual field concentration using a set of five statistical tools, indicated more or less fairly good prediction for both the seasons. Further, USEPA AP-42 based emission factor data for more or less identical mining activities were also used for AERMOD run in order to evaluate PM10 profiles. Correlation analysis indicated 71–89% and 62–85% model accuracy for winter and summer, respectively.

The paper presents a complex analysis of the presence of various pollutants (CO2, CO, NO, NO2, CH4, TNMH, C6H6) in the vicinity of sites intended for open burning and open detonation of explosives. Previously obtained data (measured field data on a representative sample) regarding the emission factors of pollutants originating from different types of explosives have been used. To predict the atmospheric dispersion of reactive agents, the ADORA and ALOHA models were used. Comparative analysis was performed with computational and experimental data on the emission of detonation products using regression analysis of the obtained emission coefficients. The overall results show satisfactory values of correlation coefficients. The prediction power of used methods increased as follows: ADORA (the smallest error), ALOHA E/A (0.43) and ALOHA E/A 0.67.

Opis:
An example of artificial neural network model for predicting air pollution has been presented. The research was conducted in Serbia, the Moravica District, on the territory of two municipalities (LuCani and Ivanjica) and the town Čačak. The level of air pollution was classified by a neural network model according to the input data: municipality, site, year, levels of soot, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter. The model was evaluated using a lift chart and a root mean square error (RMSE) has been determined, whose value was 0.0635. A multilayer perceptron has also been created and trained with a back propagation algorithm. The neural network was tested with the data mining extensions (DMX) queries. The results have been obtained for air pollution based on new input data that can be used to predict the level of pollution in future if new measurements are carried out. A web-based application was designed for displaying the results.

Landfill leachates (LFL) collected from Sfax (Tunisia) discharge area are characterized by high chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium and salts contents. They constitute a source of phytotoxicity and pollution for ground water and surface water resources which requires an adequate treatment process. To evaluate the efficiency of the coagulation/flocculation treatment, special attention was paid to the effect of pH, coagulant and flocculant doses. Then, effect of zero valent iron was also studied alone and in combination with coagulation/flocculation pretreatment. Our results indicate high removal efficiencies by coagulation/flocculation (46% COD and 63% turbidity) and Fenton process (48% COD and 76% turbidity). The combined application of coagulation/flocculation and Fenton revealed higher COD removal (62%) and turbidity reduction (90%). These results showed the applicability of this combined treatment method for the degradation of organic compounds and reduction of the treated leachate toxicity.

Desaru is a popular tourist destination located on the east coast of the state of Johor. The area has been identified for further development to enhance tourism. This presents a pollution risk to its surrounding watercourses. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential risk of contamination towards rivers located in the crux of the development region, namely the Terumpah, Che Minah, Semangar, Beluntu, Penawar Besar, and Mertang Besar Rivers. Water quality and hydraulic measurements were made at these rivers, with the intention of developing a numerical model. The model results showed deterioration in BOD5 and NH3-N in the Semangar River, up to 4.0 mg/dm3 and 0.34 mg/dm3, respectively. The Beluntu River experienced the highest degradation, to about 14.0 mg/dm3 of BOD5 and 0.8 mg/dm3 of NH3-N. The waste assimilative capacity (WAC) for the Matang Besar, Che Minah and Beluntu Rivers were very limited, with a class III BOD5 limit of 15, 43, and 10 kg/day, respectively, whereas the Terumpah River is not able to accept any BOD load without breaching the same threshold.

The influence of Yarrowia lipolytica inoculum on biodegradation of hydrocarbons, and changes in microbiota composition in the soil contaminated with petroleum have been investigated. The material under study was contaminated clay soil, containing petroleum-derived substances at approximately 17 000 [mg/kg d. m.]. Microbiological analysis was carried out by the cultivation method and the content of individual hydrocarbons (n-aliphatic, BTEX and PAHs) was determined by the GC/MS method. The largest decrease of oil-derived substances, versus the control sample, was recorded at the beginning of the process. During the first 30 days, the yeast inoculation caused most effectively removal of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons and PAHs (approximately 80% reduction), however, the content of BTEX increased nearly three times. After 60 days of the process, PAHs concentration further decreased (by 40%), concentration of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons decreased a little, however the content of BTEX increased by 10%, compared to the initial concentration. Stimulating the biodegradation process with the yeast inoculum influenced the increase of the bacteria count, mainly Gram-positive, with simultaneous decrease of fungi number.
